Reasons as why we should not play the Copy-paste game

Hey everyone

Plagiarism has been a serious issue with the community and is concerned to all the authors who work really very hard in writing blogs.

Bots like @cheetah , @steemcleaners are doing really well in identifying and tackling them. But unless we all stand against it with efforts, this will always be a challenge for the community.. (Did you know: You could be paid for reporting Plagiarism?)

Why should you not copy-paste?

  • It hurts Steemit's rank in various search engines: Means when you copy-paste from other sites, then on searching things on the net from the same topic when similar articles are found, the original contents are placed on higher spots as compared to Steemit.. When people find similar contents, they might try to know as which article was posted first. And If it's not Steemit where the article was posted first, their impression about Steemit would never be nice and which may effect on Steemit's user growth.. Search engines like Google ranks websites. And plagiarism can push off Steemit to a lower rank, which none of us ever wish. @cheetah explained it very well in this post

  • Identity theft is a crime. To steal others work and claiming it as own is a shameful and deceitful job. Just imagine that, What we couldn't write (Because we are plagiarizing) is already written by someone else.. how hard it was for him to write it down!.

  • Copy-pasting shows our weakness that we are unable to write something of our own, which we never want to show, right? It doesn't let us think deep and freshen our mind. Everyone is curious here. Share whatever you know, or comes to your mind.

  • It reduces our reputation, the number and most importantly reputation as an author. And both are very hard to earn, you know.

  • Voting on copy-pasted blogs is simply a waste of VP which could be used to help a post actually deserving this, and again if it is flagged, you can't expect a curation reward too.

Confession

  • Once when I was a very new user, I copy-pasted a post.. At that time I had no idea about what to post, and that copy-paste is not the thing.. Then I read @cheetah 's posts and I'm not posting anything copy-pasted without sources uncited.

My thoughts

I think most of the authors are clueless about why to not Copy-paste things (Without citing sources) here. So I tried to make this post so as to try to let them know a bit as exactly why to not do it.

Apart from the posts, I think about the images we use in our posts. Yes, I'm too using them. But I don't think it's OK by just citing the image sources and using them.

As the Steem community is growing, I have noticed some awesome photography work in the community. So why don't we use images from our own community with some deal or exchanges with the photographers?

This would make us completely self dependant and original.

P.S.: I'm no expert, I just shared my feelings with you guys. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.. Can't wait to know your thoughts.

Absolutely do not plagiarize or copy. The majority of successful bloggers I know work very hard on their posts. I take my posts very seriously as well, and when I see low-effort posts or simple cut and paste jobs with no additional content it makes me furious.

@senderos , thanks for the comment..

Exactly, and plagiariasism never encourages them.

Well put. Creativity should be rewarded but only original. Thanks for sharing.

Exactly..

Thanks for taking time to comment.;)

You are most welcome. Thanks for the nice gift.

I agree with everything you said. Yesterday I saw about a dozen photography posts where the "authors" posted stock screen saver photos as their own. This community will not flourish if those types of posts are rewarded. If in doubt, right click the photo and search Google to see if it's original.

@dabeckster We can be very original if we use photographs only from our community.

Yes, reverse search is a good idea to figure out plagiarism.

Is sharing the information with the original source is bad? a lot of information in cryptoworld or in bitcoins news are shared few hundred or thousand time. If you keep the original source it can give the author new followers no?

Yes, I think (not sure) that it's ok if you cite the source.. But my view is that, you should rewrite (Sharing reference) and share your views on the topic rather than copy-pasting blindly..

I understand what you mean, add some new information or rewrite.

Yup! Plagiarism may give something in the short run, but never gets you a good result on the long run.
It's great having steemcleaners and cheetah bots here!
Hope to have some more stricter bots as well!
Cheers. :D
