Speech To Mark The International Day Of Education by Comrade Emmanuel Ekpe, the SRC/SUG President, Obong University, Always Ibom State, Nigeria. On December 3, 2015, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) adopted a resolution proclaiming January 24th as the International Day of Education, in celebration of the role of education towards global peace and sustainable development. International Day of Education 2020 is being celebrated globally with the theme "Learning for People, Planet, Prosperity and Peace". This year's celebration position education and the learning it enables, as humanity's greatest renewable resources and also affirms the role of education as a fundamental right and a public good. Education as one of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) never at a point stand or operate alone. It incorporates, life, environment, wealth, and stability which is where the team of this year stem from. In light of the complex challenges faced by humanity today, the level at which countries invest in not only education but a quality one will determine their future prosperity, strength, and stability. Education as a whole has a great impact on every aspect of development such as reducing poverty, creating a higher income, advancing gender equality and reducing child/girls' marriages. Today, education is in crisis because the stakeholders such as government, traditional rulers, families and corporate bodies are and not doing enough and because of this millions are left behind doors leading to create an environment in crisis. To ensure adequate education government needs to step up their game, by recognising it as a major responsibility, traditional rulers need to sensitize their subject and corporate bodies should provide corporate social responsibilities to the communities they operate in. As the international day of education is celebrated it will avail us of the knowledge of the many ways learning can empower people, preserve life and foster peace.
