I don't know about you, but when I curate posts I don't necessarily read them all. This is a controversial statement, and I don't mean to encourage this behavior or condone it.
However, there's a real time efficiency problem when it comes to Steemit. Discovering new authors is a real challenge, and so is quickly filtering out garbage and junk content or content that doesn't suit your interests. I want to promote things that I'm interested in on the platform while also encouraging friends and encouraging good writing.
But there's just so much stuff on this platform, and more added every second. So, like many of you, I end up skimming sometimes. I do enjoy reading posts, especially interesting ones, but the primary reason we read on this platform in particular is so that we can be sure of the value. Once that author has earned your trust... You don't necessarily need to read all of their posts to vote for them.
In that respect each post becomes a store of not only value that is rated via upvotes, but also value measured in trust between the author and the curators. That's really awesome. Yeah, I'm an author. But I'm also a curator, and I take great pride with that on the platform.
That being said, SMT's aside, the biggest change that can happen to Steemit is a really awesome app whose primary purpose is to make looking through posts easier. That'll be huge for Steemit, and for Steem.
So for those of you who read my posts and actually read this one, thank you for acknowledging the value of this post. For those of you who skim and upvote, thanks for your trust.

People complain that authors with a history of producing consistently quality content get added to autovoters.
These guys running the bots want their curation rewards.
If an author starts phoning it in, fewer will manually upvote, curation rewards will dry up and the autovotes will vanish.

I agree. As much as people complain, the system as is is pretty darn good. Crap posts are pretty consistently punished and good comment gets rewarded... Eventually.

I wish I could say I read every post I upvote. I feel bad about all the hard work I know people are putting into their stuff.
But I feel better knowing that, when I upvote their stuff, I'm helping them. Though if I read more posts, then I would be in a better situation to help out new, undiscovered authors.
It's a tough problem.

Yeah, it's really an issue in these early days of the platform. Discovery of new authors requires wading through the much, so to speak. Why do it when you can go to where good content is guaranteed? Yet we all know it's food for the platform. Still, you can depend on being discovered eventually if you or the effort in, and there are a lot of good minnow projects to counterbalance this fact of the platform.

I divide my voting power to match the level of attention a post received from me. For example, I might give 5% to a post I didn't read through but sounded interesting. I might give 1% to a comment just cause I can. But my 100% votes go to content I read.
As an author considering return to steemit, having an audience who READS my stuff is more important than upvotes and money. So this is really a challenge.

That sounds like a really good strategy. I understand your perspective: being a writer on steemit is no way gig. Mostly the pace is really hard to keep up consistently, so I gave it up for other sorts of posts.
I saw that you're just getting back to steemit after quite the hiatus, so I'm not sure how away you are about SMT's. As an author, I'm sure you appreciate how awesome it would be to have a coin associated with a purely fiction sure. It'd change everything!
Anyway, thanks for your insightful comments.

What are SMT's?

First off, want to apologize for all of the typing errors above. Was writing my response from my phone, haha.
SMT's are smart media tokens. Steemit Inc. is basically going to release code for witness approval that will allow people to essentially create an ICO for a Steem-backed currency. I've made some posts about it and if you go to the trending page you should see some words on the subject from the man himself, Ned.
