Lessons From A Little Over A Year On Steemit

I wanted to take a little moment to talk a bit about my journey on Steemit so far. I do these every now and again because it's important to take a good look at ourselves and our progress - especially with a never ending project like a Steemit blog.

I've been on Steemit for a little over a year, now (I joined in September 2016). During that time I've been active for about eight months or so total (when you take into account times I wasn't particularly active on the platform). I've recently recommitted to the platform, posting for about two months straight with an unbroken flow of posts (two a day when I'm good).

When I first started posting I stuck mostly to science articles, video games, anime, and tech. It was hard, but I managed to gain a pretty decent following. I've learned so freakin' much since joining a year ago, and here are some of the important lessons:

1.) Consistency is key not only because it grows you on the platform, but because it keeps your audience. People who follow you follow you because of what you were making at a certain point in time. When you change your blog radically, it's going to effect you.

2.) Being inactive on the platform for a period of time may be inevitable, but try to keep these periods short. Users are always coming onto the platform but they're always going inactive, too (considered "dead accounts"). So you always need to be expanding on the platform to grow appreciably on it.

3.) Entertaining or informative articles are best. Blog-gy long form posts probably have the most trouble on the platform, although you can amass a quite loyal and interested following if you're persistent.

4.) The platform is always changing and evolving. Embrace it. Remember that nothing like Steemit has ever been seen on the internet. Societies at large haven't caught on yet, but Steem is silently building and propagating in the background. By the time it reaches critical mass in a few years, it'll be way late to get in on the best part of this revolution. We're lucky to be here and that's important to remember when things get hard or seem unfair on the platform. Don't give up, and don't quit.

That's pretty much it.
