It's Monday funday and you know what that means: it's time for another episode of The Good Word! This past week I managed to tell an anesthesiologist from Saudi Arabia, an old gaming buddy, and an ex-girlfriend about Steemit. Apologies in advance for not using names: I try to respect people's privacy and have a policy against mentioning someone by name on the blockchain without their express permission unless they have already.
He and I were sitting at the cafe I frequent when he saw that I was reading a book, too (Thus Spoke Zarathustra. Those who follow me know I've started a series of posts on the book). The anesthesiologist introduced himself first as a student studying electrical engineering at a nearby school. He was a jovial fellow but modern, thoroughly American except for the fact that he was technically from Saudi Arabia. I would never have guessed if he hadn't volunteered the information.
After a while of talking he told me that he'd decided to get out of anesthesiology because of the insane hours (at which point I wondered if electrical engineering would be much better - but I kept that to myself), and was just getting settled in after a transcript debacle which had required him to go back to Saudi Arabia to acquire it personally.
I can't remember how I segued into a conversation about Steemit, but I managed it. When I asked if he knew about cryptocurrencies he said yes and nodded, but when I told him about Steemit he didn't seem particularly interested. I didn't push.
My gaming buddy is one I've known for a long time. It's strange, you think of a gamer as a male somewhere between the ages of 15 and 40 who wears nerdy t-shirts and has no social life (lookin' a lot like me at the moment). However, this person his a mother in her late 40's who's been heavily into online gaming since before I'd even given it a second look. She and some other online friends of mine play League of Legends, and although our merry band hasn't gotten together in some time I recently contacted her to check in on her.
She'd gotten a posh, well-paying job and was tutoring on the side, so things were looking up on her end from last I spoke to her. I knew I'd push hard about Steemit because she mostly works from home.... so there's really no excuse for her not to be involved in the community to at least some degree. I got her to sign up and as of Saturday she was waiting for her account to get created. I'll be sure to resteem and post a link to her intro in one of these posts when she's finally up.
It might sound weird to invite an ex to get on a social media platform on which you are very active. However, this ex and I have been on good terms and have stayed in contact since she left for the Peace Corps. Her journey overseas has been hard, but fulfilling, and she's shared with me the ups and downs of attempting to do good in a small village in Africa. I've been practically begging her to get on Steemit and share her story. She wants to, but the internet over there is apparently very, very, bad. Barely good enough for instant messenger, let alone actual writing and posting of any sort. I'm searching for a workaround. If I don't find one, well, I know when she's due to come back. I'll reintroduce the idea then.
If any of you have told anyone about Steemit recently, I'd love to hear about it down in the comments (and so would everyone else!) And if you enjoyed this post, please upvote, resteem, and follow!
