Why use all our voting power on others instead of upvoting our own posts? I am unchecking the upvote post box starting today on my new posts and also am ending my practice of sometimes or often voting up my own comments because it feels like the right thing to do for my own happiness.
When I starting using Steemit in May, I was so excited about voting that naturally I voted up hundreds of my own comments just to try it out! Burning my voting power all on myself left me feeling the same way I used to feel when having sex without a partner. There is a line from a Kesha song that sums it up!
"Look who's all alone now."
With trying to make more posts everyday, I have not been feeling very good about burning up 6% of my daily voting power or about $45 a day voting my own posts up when we are kind enough here to already be voting the posts I makes up $200 to $1,000 a day. Do I really need that additional $45 from my own votes or would I feel better about being able to give that out?
While it might look like I am trying to impress us with how generous and kind I am, the truth is just like the rest of us I want to feel good all day all the time except for occasionally when I honestly want to feel miserable and roll around in it for a while. What I am learning is that every little action I take contributes to how I feel. Almost all the feelings I do not like are traceable to small actions of selfishness. To identify them I just need to notice when my feelings of joy slip into fear or anger or jealousy or doubt. Whatever I did right before that is usually the source.
Last night when I read a comment about "Why does Jerry's post have $15 upvoted right when it is posted" I identified the feeling and made it worse by writing a defensive answer along the lines of "Well because Jerry is a big shot that invested 15 BTC into Steem and when you invest that much you can vote yourself up all day too."
After that answer I felt even worse because that is exactly the kind of jerk I hated most of my life and thankfully today I realize this is motivation to do something about it. Ending self-upvoting forces even more faith because starting each post from $0.00 is a bit scary. What if it stays there and earns as much as a post on Facebook? At least with voting myself up, I know short of a total spam post that gets flagged I will earn $15+.
Finally, what if the founders of Steemit @ned and @dan took the same attitude I had up until last night about their posts? With each of them having about 100 times as much Steem Power as I do, that means each of them could upvote every one of their posts $1,500 to $2,000 although technically that much of a vote might drop the value of the votes significantly. Wouldn't they perfectly be within their rights to make several posts every day and rake in $5,000 to $10,000 a day off of their own upvotes? I noticed that on @dan's recent post about EOS he declined payout and on the one before that he did not upvote it. @ned also declines payouts on this posts.
If the founders of Steemit choose with their example to not upvote their own posts and trust the community either to create the payout or decline payout, is not this probably the right answer for me too? The first argument here likely is "well they have lots of money while you, we, me, and I do not. We need every dollar we can get." Ironically I have learned the more generous I am, the more I will tend to be given by the world. The attitude of "I do not have enough money and therefore need to hustle for every dollar I can get" is the same attitude that left me without the ability to ever feel financially secure and to then waste any good fortune that came my way. Maybe I will upgrade to declining a payout all together one day ...
Until then, I am going to give out all of my voting power to someone besides me in the same imperfect and awkward way I have been doing it so far. Thank you for reading this and I hope it was helpful for you!
Would you upvote this post if you support giving up our rights to upvote ourselves because the more readers see this, the more we can collaborate with our voting power?
Love,
Jerry Banfield
I think all the "self voting lists" and the entire issues is completely over-shadowing all kinds of other work we should be doing on the Steemit platform.
To quote @smooth:
"Someone who buys SP and then selfvotes is not 'draining' anything and at best can get back a portion of what was put in. It causes no harm at all."
Investors are the ones who underwrite all of the rewards on this platform. If you are not an investor, or are only a smaller investor, you need to focus your efforts on creating inspiring content that makes investors want to give their money to you. Whatever else they do or don't do with their money (including self-voting) is not your concern and does not harm you in any way. Nevertheless, you do have a downvote that you can use to disagree with what you think are underserved rewards. I suggest using it."
"The idea of creating 'lists of shame' and demonizing people is divisive, creates a hostile and toxic environment attractive to no one, and serves no useful purpose. There is no way to tell from these lists whether the content is deserving of the rewards or not. The only way to tell is by actually looking at the content, and if you think it is undeserving, downvote it."
"Your own statistics show that self-voting is awarding about 8.5% of the reward pool. I don't find that suggestive of any problem whatsoever. It is probably a very reasonable number given that the current parameters give people 10 full power votes to make per day. Thus one is being applied to the voters' own content and nine to others' (on average, of course). Seems fine."

I think upvoting your own posts is a personal choice that depends on where you are in the minnow-whale cycle. If you're a minnow then it obviously helps so why wouldn't you do it? However, once you start to get some serious voting power (like you do), then maybe it's not worth it so much anymore. I can definitely see your point: your posts make a bunch of money anyway so it's probably more beneficial for you to use your steem power to upvote others and help the platform grow. Like I said, I think it all depends on where you are.
Good post. Keep 'em coming. 💛

"I think upvoting your own posts is a personal choice that depends on where you are in the minnow-whale cycle. "
I upvote myself with the logic that it will help my post/comment get exposure. I'm still trying to find the upvote sweet spot. I been experimenting with splitting my upvotes between myself, commentators and other blog posts. I'm not sure if this is good strategy, I guess that's why it's an experiment.
I'm curious to hear from others how they are using their upvotes?
Downvoting a post can decrease pending rewards and make it less visible. Common reasons:

I usually only upvote my posts these days. Very rarely do I upvote my own comments unless it's to get exposure on a popular post like this one (and even then I would never do 100%). Although, if I'd just written something like "nice post" on @jerrybanfield's post I wouldn't upvote that. In this case I'd rather use my steem power to upvote other people's posts than my generic comment.
I still think generic comments have a purpose because it lets the author know you appreciate their work, but upvoting it? Yeah nah, what's the point? I see a lot of stuff on steemit I would rather upvote instead.

The larger you are, the more of an impact your actions have. You can do more benefit to the community with your votes and you can do more harm. It all affects the Steem price in the end. I agree that larger players need to be held more accountable, and they are more automatically accountable to the price.

I was just thinking of that the last few days. Not from an aspect of right/wrong but what is the right strategy to use in this "game". As a minnow our vote may only be worth .01. At that point we are all struggling to get any attention and any tiny payout is huge. But as we get more steempower we get more influence and we can think about the responsibility we have to the steemit community. This is a shared environment and the more everyone prospers the better it is for everyone, including ourselves. Self upvoting is just a strategy like using randowhale or the discord community. Like a space ship, we have to get off the ground and into orbit. That takes more energy. Once we are in orbit we can use less energy to actually do what we are here to do. Engage with others. By doing that the folks we interact will benefit along with us.

Unfortunately it is not mine or anybody elses (who's upvoting himself) problem. If it is actually harmful to the Steemit platform or Steem in general, it is up to the developers or others with power to fix it. Most people are going to pursue their own interests and if upvoting myself helps me, then I'm going to do it.

Also take your case as an example. You just gave yourself $5 or whatever. What difference does that make to your account of 10K? Almost nothing. Imagine if you gave 50 struggling authors 10 cents, they would be really happy with it and some of them might even start to publish fantastic content you and others are going to like for years.
Investing in others is much better, what goes around comes around they say, and they might have a point :)

Upvoting our own posts can be beneficial only in a way when we are short on upvotes and we consider our post to be worthy of reading. But, visiting the hot page and all the self upvotes on the plagiarised and meme stuff I'm afraid this will be a turn off for many potentionally great authors on Steemit. This needs to be sorted out in the next HF, also the reward system is not showing too much efficiency, only thing that has changed is that people either vote only themsleves up or circle jerking. @jerrybanfield Thanks for addressing this matter.

A self-vote is very rarely justified. I happened to find a situation yesterday that required a self-vote on my comment. Someone commented on my old post and since i couldn't edit the post anymore, i had to comment on it, but the comment was at the bottom, so i chose to self-vote it to get it to the top so everyone would see the message that the information was outdated. Other than situations like this, i think it's almost never justified to self-vote anything.

Great post. However, here's the better question...how is it that you know this is a problem, yet the creators of Steem don't?! Really losing faith in Steem lately. There's no reason people with as much Steem power as you had many others have, should even have the choice to upvote your own posts and comments. All this is doihg is enabling greed, making the rich get richer, and giving the 90% of Steem without a lot of power, seeing the true colors of what's behind Steem, which is basically diluting the coin for the sole benefit of the whales, while forcing most of the Steemit community to kiss up to the whales and post crap for the sole purpose of getting upvoted. If it's so obvious to you Jerry that this is wrong, which it most certainly is, then why isn't it just as obvious to the developers. I bet it's fun for all the whalesgetting rich off the naivety of Steemit development, but I've always been taught to be greedy when others are fearful, and fearful when others are greedy Steemit is enabling pure greed, when it should be doing the exact opposite, but hey...let me just upvote this comment so I can get paid, and because I can. Yep, this will eventually crash the coin...guaranteed

Nice one Jerry - it makes perfect sense to me. As a newbie, who actually came here because of you, I followed your example in upvoting myself because I knew no different and because I'm lucky if will I total $1 per post anyway! Not really, but I do admit that even a $0.3 upvote gets my attention these days. Onwards and upwards - ethically :)

I always love your honesty Jerry. That you do it for your own inner peace is fantastic. We should do what makes us feel good in our hearts. As anyone with money can testify, that is the most important thing in life! Being rich and miserable is even worse than being poor and miserable as you have no excuse!
My opinion on this is pretty clear.. I am an Anarchist at heart, and I love the idea of not having too many rules set by one body that governs everyone.. I think its great that everyone has the choice to upvote themselves or not. I think the only reason people complain is because of jealousy, and i think jealousy is a very dark and destructive force. What is it anyone else's business who someone chooses to upvote.. Why is it any better or worse to upvote yourself or someone else?
If we feel moved to upvote others then that is great! If we have enough power and money to upvote ourselves to the tune of $100 we probably don't even care about the money.. For most people with a lot of money, its the message that becomes important, and those that have invested (i think) have a right to get their point seen since they have a vested interest in the system.
If we are integrous, we upvote our own posts because we want our point of view to be heard. That was the case for me today! I read a scare mongering post about the crash of Cryptocurrencies and i didnt really enjoy reading that post.. SO i commented on it to try to encourage people to not panic and sell etc.. I then upvoted my own comment (i have a little bit of power) and didn't upvote the main post because i didnt like it.. I had two people who seemed quite upset about it.. This annoyed me because it seemed people were more stuck in a 'poor me' attitude concerned about getting money and upvotes than the content itself. Let's be honest, if we scrapped self upvoting, people who were trying hard but not yet successful would still be getting upset!
I would say to people who are upset about self voting to let it go and focus instead on making amazing passionate content. Then your time, and upvotes will come!
Sorry if i sound a bit feisty, i think the full moon is out!

I hope something changes to keep the little guy going. It seems that If you don't start with mega steem power or you are not a professional blogger with a following already than it's hard to want to stick around. It don't the idea of timing your upvote. If you missed out on the timing then you won't upvote something that you really like cause you don't make money. Everybody loses.

@jerrybanfield ... this is a great initiative. I have been thinking about this since I started to know steemit better. Also, I have done this on few of my posts. this way, we can save our vote, and use it for someone who truly needs it.

I think there is no reason to feel bad about voting yourself if this is possible. If others can do it, then you can too, and your not alone :).
That said, I think the platform will gain much more, if voting for self comments will be disabled. While you can upvote your own posts to promote them, voting your own comments is not so valuable. And does feel like playing with yourself (which is ok. Dont feel bad man. You are good).

Thank you for setting the example. It is people like me who try and write good useful, quality content for my genre of people Gardening, Homestead, food etc. I share the wealth of information that my grandparents taught me about gardening etc. I have truly been on STEEMIT for almost a year, I worked very hard for all my followers, as I did not have a following come to steemit from Youtube. I do not generally upvote my comments, but have upvoted my posts. I have almost 200 SP and 550 followers I am at level 54 of reputation and I only get 5 Cents of voting power. Today I posted about an update of my garden, and had 13 people including me up vote it. All the people were from level 31 to 60, and it netted me a nice little profit of 58 cents, I just don't get it. If you Can Help me understand that would be helpful, because I am loosing my patients. Would it possibly be that I need more steem? HELP explain please.

Did not know any of that, and also would like to know why that is. That's insane considering how much you already have going on here! i also wonder how much of the platform is geared towards those that are mostly using the cryptocurrency side of the platform as an investment strategy and how much money + reputation does compared to your reputation you grew on here, organically, minus a hefty external boost in the wallet from outside the platform :/ Might also be that everyone used up their steem before the upvote for you that day? not sure, hoping someone can shed some LIGHT over HERE!

Hi @jerrybanfield I think it's a good choice to help the community growing with your voting power instead of increasing only your own steem balance.
Do you think that in the future there will be a change via hardfork where we can't upvote our own comments and articles to increase the networking and curating even more?
It would be really interesing to see how steemit would change with such an update.
Keep being the great contributor you are.

It would certainly encourage users to create better content. But.. it would also prevent some investors who open an account with the main purpose of self voting to profit on there investment. Not everyone is here to become a blogger.

Voting on others still gives you profits. In fact it will give you more profit in the long run, because you make many content creators happy in the process. The more content creators are happy, the more new users and therefore investors will come. I'm fairly certain the value of STEEM would grow much more if everyone stops self-voting altogether!

On one hand I agree with you. Voting for yourself is exactly like liking your own facebook post yet on steemit it is not visible at first glance. That is why it is more tolerated.
On the other hand there is the money factor. I believe this is not a problem for you as you are already very popular on steemit and there will always be people upvoting your posts anyway but common mortals like us is different. A post with no upvotes and the dollar symbol at zero will rarely see any engagement unfortunately!

Jerry, you left me confused all over on 2 dimensions. First, at the level of humanity: I understood you, even you make me realized that I have suffer from anger all my life. Probably comes from my childhood. I am able to remember this because one day at Columbia I decided to research about the Nature of Anger. I bought a book about it and never read it. LOL. So I never cure myself nor did anything about. Anger went underground and now 40 later I am remembering this episode.
Second, regarding making coins you also left me confused weather or not upvote myself and doing so I will have a truly measure of the value of my work and the performance of my network.

Regarding the coins and upvotes, your value is both for you to determine and if you share content on here, that can be measured by yourself AND others. Most of us are probably critical of ourselves and our own content, but if you enjoy doing any of it, that is pretty priceless in itself. If you just want to share and express and be open to getting some credit for your contributions here, you probably can't go wrong. Jerry, If Steemit didn't want us to upvote our own posts comments and replies then why are we able to do it? after all when we post an article on steemit it is automatically self-upvoted by the system to make it appear we upvoted ourselves. I see no gilt and no reason for not voting for myself. if it were so bad then steemit will make the changes through regramming, after all Steemit is still in beta with lots of changes ahead of it. If you have a good post on Steemit then upvote yourself god dammit!

When I started I was upvoting my posts and now realize that I have not voting power what so ever.
I stopped as of yesterday to raise my voting power so that I can give back much like you are saying.
It does suck upvoting people and they get nothing from my upvoting.
I want to give back so that my vote does possess something so I am rebuilding that power.

I literally just came from watching one of your videos on YouTube about earning 2% through up-voting your own posts. For someone with as much voting power as you @jerrybanfield and as much account value, indeed it would be best if you spread the wealth around.
Personally, as green as I am, I will always up-vote any well thought out comment or post that I discover on my feed. I may have a low Steem Power at the moment but I would feel uneasy not giving something back to the people that read my blog posts.
I appreciate everybody equally. Quality post as usual and please continue making the videos that you do on YouTube. I like them very much.
