I feel like that whenever that I'm making a post, I'm thinking to myself: will a steam whale like this content and upvote it? Instead of: will the community appreciate what I'm writing about?
Steemit feels like a semi-censored place to me. You only get rewarded for getting the upvotes from the elite, instead of getting upvotes from the average Joe as well. The system is also misbranded as a "decentralized social media". What is decentralized about Steemit, the platform? Barely anything. Almost everything is controlled by the founders. Only the currency STEEM is decentralized.
Steemit is promoting societal unjust by saying that the more you own the more power you have got. Do we really want a community to be a place where everyone does nothing of importance, but rather purely out of the expectation of getting a few upvotes from whales and therefore earnings money?
You're doing it wrong. Just do your thing, do your best. If it appeals to whales, great. If not, you had fun doing it. Basically, posting good content should be why you are on Steemit. Not making money. That's just a bonus.
If you are mostly interested in money, then there's no magic bullet. The system is rigged, yes, but that's what makes it possible for some to earn money.

I can't argue with you there. But I'm sure many of us were doing exactly the same thing before on Reddit, Tumblr, Twitter etc. I do see some good content here.
But you are probably right that the factor that got us to leave Reddit and try Steemit is the money.

I doesn't post for money, i bought a few thousands of steempower, and vote my own post for fun.

Definitely. Money is a HUGE factor on Steemit. Reddit has a large customer base, and so does Twitter. What attracts people to steemit is the potential rewards that blogging can bring you.
You can't earn directly from twitter and reddit. At least not in the scale that you can with Steemit.

Great points on all sides. I have to agree with @liberosist that we were probably doing the same thing on X social media platform prior to steemit. I also strongly agree the money is a HUGE factor in this.
This is going to be a fun ride to watch play out. I'll bring the popcorn.

I think it depends from person to person. But point taken, it's quite likely that most early steemers are hugely motivated by Steemit. Personally, I continue to do what I used to do on Reddit. But yes, money is one reason I'm giving it a shot, otherwise I'd stay at Reddit.

He is still right. Write for yourself, if you get some extra pennies, it's more rewarding than Reddit, and you're doing what you want.

To be fair I blogged about many things on my personal blog for no money, for about 3 years. In fact it was probably negative money as the personal things I wrote about scared off clients

We need people to actually write for what they love instead of writing for what whales love.
We need to campaign for change, plain and simple.

Same here - I have blogged, tweeted and reddited for over a decade now. I did it because I enjoy expressing my opinion, sharing things with others. Engaging in good conversation with people from all walks of life.
I see Steemit as the same, just with the added bonus of potential for earning money.
But I get not everyone is like you or I. There are people here who are mostly interested in money. How many and to what magnitude - that's up for debate.
One thing's for sure, the community is not sustainable if everyone here wants money. It'll only survive and thrive if people come to blog and comment.

Exactly - when people blog for money, quality of content is usually poor as well. And generic.
When people blog about what they love, however, it will actually yield them more. To be honest.

A confession. "Curation reward of 0.003 STEEM POWER for rok-sivante/the-7-really-cool-things-i-discovered-while-locked-out-my-account-for-five-days-how-steemit-has-changed-my-life-and-why-the" This particular post was at 4$ after I upvoted it went to 9$ I am not a big fish even. But... I found that when you actually read the post. In my case more than 5 min. The reward for my upvote is substantial. Just so that you know this particular incident had a lot of minnow/ larger fish in it already. I have up-voted many times before always reading and apply logic as needed. If something needs a down-vote, do not hesitate. We all need to keep the system clean or at least hold users accountable. 2k For boob's? I think not Mnr. Whale.

The reward for the writer was big - as you say it jumped $5. But your reward was minuscule - 0003 SP which is a few cents. If you are a minnow, you only make money if you vote before the whales.

The good news is the whales are turning minnows into tilapia every day. Once theres enough Tilapia the content will have more profitable eyes for sure. Give it time steemit is so new.

There is no good news, the creators own 50% of the money on the network and that will never get any lower so the problem will never be resolved until they adjust some algorithms and screw themselves in the process.

I think the point is, post content like you don't expect to make money on it, if it catches hold and gets some good movement you'll be set.
If you try to write hoping to snag a whale, chances are you won't , because it looks like your fishing!
Good luck with it.
