Because 25% of your post value goes to curators (the accounts that upvoted your post) Then what remains is split in SBD (Steem Dollars) and SP (steem power)
PS I Agree that this is super confusing !!! They should fix it and show us independently what exactly the poster will get and what the curators before the pay out's happen... That should be very easy to implement... When mouse over : show what curators get, when not, show what the poster gets!
Yes... But they can fix it without a hardfork... it should be super easy to fix. It has to do with how steemit shows the blockchain data... (just show the same numbers reduced by 25%)
Part of the intention of showing the Total Payout by default might be to impress potential new users with the sticker shock. It's effective IMO.
I agree though; it's totally confusing as an author. I think that a good compromise could be to show the personal Payout instead of Total Payout if the user viewing it is the author. Everyone else sees the total.
There was a comment just like that one in my post I quoted above. The Payout number is the total amount paid to everyone. It doesn't take out the 25%. Oh and by the way, the amount paid to others is 50% - 25% to curators and 25% to the comments. Read the white paper for more details.
I had the exact same problem, i believe we should earn what the post says and not less. Curators earnings should be apart from that amount. My post was showing 190 USD and i got 100 USD only, 90 USD vanished in the air. Believe are getting confused and angry because of false promises. Some users will tell you to read the white paper that's like 100 PDF pages... Everyday users don't want to read 100 pages to understand how this site works, they want to earn what the post shows, no less, no more.
it might be a little frustrating.. but remember that the people who upvote you help you to become successful. In most cases you owe it to their upvote for you getting anything at all!
just a little understand goes a long way
happy posting!

PS2 I opened an issue on github since I think it really very important to change ASAP !

I asked the same thing here but got not actual response and I don't think I will for a while as everyone is just focusing on security and stability at the moment. And temporarily on today's fork.
