Confirmation that the Steam Summer Sale will start on Thursday, June 22 has been issued by one of PayPal's social media accounts.

A mid-May rumour suggested that PC gaming's annual Steam Summer Sale would start on June 22, and online payment provider PayPal has now confirmed that rumor.

"It's official. The #SteamSummerSale starts June 22 at 6pm BST (June 23 at 1am in Malaysia) ," PayPalUK announced, continuing a company tradition of broadcasting the sale's start date before Steam itself.

Developers had been told about the event a month in advance, and a screenshot made its way to Reddit with the news that the 2017 Steam Summer Sale would run 9:50am PST June 22 to 10:05am July 5.

In 2016, Steam operator Valve Corporation dropped the daily deals and short-term flash deals that had become a hallmark of its sales, one which saw enthusiastic users check the site for deep discounts on a regular basis.

Instead, it allowed developers to set a single static discount, while the service displayed a rotating selection on each user's home page.

Though the change saw studios post more conservative discounts, jarring long-term users accustomed to the sale frenzy, it actually led to a 40% increase in revenue, according to the founder of data analysis tool SteamSpy.

"An average discount [in 2016] was 50%, instead of the 66.67% from [2015]," Sergey Galyonkin had written. "While one could argue that this is a bad deal for consumers, I'd say consumers will be better off if the game developers don't go bankrupt in the long run."
