Steemit has proven to be a success so far. I started writing on here when it was only a few months old in August 2016. Many of the big corporate social media sites are starting to censor their content. Facebook's algorithm only shows friend's posts of things that they think you would like to see. Recently, they have removed the share button from profiles that are not public and have cut down on videos being shown on the platform. In exchange, they added in the ability to write posts with a colored background. You can only fit a couple of sentences at a time within the colored background. Which is fine, new functionality to make it more engaging is a good thing. However, they doing it to cut down on exposing corruption within our government. Hillary Clinton lost the 2017 election because her massive role in government corruption was exposed to the public. Donald Trump ran on getting rid of the corruption, so it isn't that much of a surprise that he won. Since, social sites like Twitter, Youtube, and Facebook have put in a lot effort to prevent more of this information from being shown to many people.
Track Record
Steemit proves how a social network on the blockchain can work and work well. Many people worried about the quality of the content shown here on Steem because of the payouts. The community decides what articles are valuable and those are the ones that get paid out. The reputation system works. I remember in the beginning, I didn't put much thought into my posts and realized that it wasn't getting me anywhere. I even ran into an issue where my content came up plagiarized. It was a mistake and I learned quickly, cleaned up my strategy and began to write good content. Not that I am an amazing writer, over time my writing ability has improved. When I write, I find that I am able to learn more too. Sometimes I have to research things and learn new information that I may not have known before. It keeps me questioning different things, gives me the ability to vent how I feel, and grow as a person.
Social Tycoons
These big corporate social companies are going to be in trouble in the future as more and more people move towards decentralized blockchains free of censorship. There are already moves against Netflix on the blockchain with the SingularDTV coin available. Ethereum is seeing competition from coins like UBIQ. Ether has even inspired new coins like ARK. Even the big boys like Microsoft are investing heavily into the blockchain. It seems like there is no stopping it at this point. I already spend a lot of time on Facebook because I found a big conspiracy group that I can discuss things with. Every day more people ask me about Bitcoin and how to buy it. The problem with cryptocurrency is people don't understand what it is. It's an education problem, but it is the future. As soon as it becomes simplified enough for the average person to know how to use a blockchain it will go mainstream.
I think mainstream censorship will be the biggest boost to Steemit, so I hope they do more of it!
(I just noticed - your followers, start date, rating, posts, wallet - most similar to my account I've ever seen!)

I learned of Steemit primarily because of the YouTube demonetization effort that Y.T. was waging against some of it's brightest content creators ... Youtube's demonetization efforts looks like it'll be a boon for Steemit.
