Royalty Free Images to Use on Steemit

in steemit •  7 years ago

Most of the time finding a royalty free image to use with your posts is a pain, but there is a way to do that with ease.

This comes to us from Microsoft Bing:

search for the image you want to use with your post on
https://www.bing.com/images/discover?form=Z9LH

Next select filter on the right side of the screen:

Click on Licence in the options menu:

For this example I have chosen "Free to Share and Use" :

Now we have a choice of many images we can use for Bob Odenkirk:

There are a few choices like public domain, free to use and modify, free to use and share etc... However this process in not perfect, if you get in the hot seat for using the wrong image, you "Better Call Saul"...

Authors get paid when people like you upvote their post.

Thank you! I have been told to use royalty free images but did not know where to find them, and like you said it was a hassle! Took me an hour to find the ones I needed for my post today ahah! thanks for blowing my mind, frees up so much time to actually post! Steem on!
UPVOTED AND RESTEEMED!

Yes it's hard to work with the few royalty free image websites, this service by Bing is awesome and if they make a mistake we can blame Bill Gates ;)

I was just looking at google as to how they handle image use, when in images, you click tools, then usage rights, then labeled for reuse. Gives plenty of images to work with.

I realize I was nabbing property that I shouldn't have been using. Even with credits.

Sweet, Ill give it a go and check it out tonight! That sounds like a plan! make signs saying BBG! Blame Bill Gates! we could start picketing! ha! :)

Lol!

Great! Thank you.

See my comment on the post. Royalty Free images are not free. RF is a type of paid licensing! :-)

every publisher should now that, but there are also other good sites for royalty pics, sounds and videos

@joseph I did the same thing with Google, but it often had results that were licensed. In fact, Google says right on the search result that you are responsible for the use.

There are so many good sources for free pictures, most of the time it isn't worth messing around. We don't need another "Crying Michael Jordan

"Crying Michael Jordan"? I am not familiar with that story. can you please explain?

I am providing two links. If you have any experience in legal documents, go straight to the second one. If that is a new subject, then read them in order.

In this case, where we all stand to receive financial benefit for the use of the image, it opens the possibility. Not probable, but possible.

Here is a link to a media article on it:

http://business.financialpost.com/legal-post/how-using-a-viral-meme-of-michael-jordan-crying-could-land-you-in-a-messy-lawsuit

And another from a legal perspective:

https://heitnerlegal.com/2016/02/25/is-there-a-cause-of-action-surrounding-crying-michael-jordan/

A social post is not commercial use, unless your post is just one image that you use repeatedly. There were no lawsuits for memes unless they were used as a commercial product or advertising.

Strong factors that weigh in favor of fair use are for criticism, commentary, and news reporting.

I think that pretty much describes social media.

This is a good overview of what is at stake:

http://www.aaronkellylaw.com/sue-over-a-meme/

I think it is difficult, and most people are not at risk, but there still exists a risk. Defamation, publicizing private data/info, false light, invasion of privacy, copyright infringement and unauthorized us of property are all named in that link.

Like I said, the risk may be small, but always "think before you meme".

Google have similar function too!

Now I will have access to all of the good Memes.

Bork!

very cool tips, thanks for the post

hahahahahaha totally love your punch line!

Very brilliant, thanks a lot ...
Nice work my best friend ...

@alanmirza

Follow and vote me brothers

oh wow thanks so much for the info!

Let's have a decentralized image server. Not only a server, but a full working website with browsing images et cetera.

Great idea, my friend.

Good information. Thanks for sharing

Hi @joseph for this useful post we really need at many time in steemit to use some picture outside of our personal picture. I use google search for long but really never knows about this. Use to work with many pics and we always have to pay at shutterstock and other library provider. You just give me a big plus. Big thanks and peace and happiness for all

Great resource, thanks for sharing this guide.

Thanks for sharing very helpful

I will usually try USA.gov for a public domain image first. After that, it can be tough. There are just some images you can't take yourself! This is good info. Thanks for sharing!

cool

Thanks for sharing, this would be a lot helpful.

Thank you Joseph, I have been wondering what to do when I run out of my artwork available that matches my mood or the topic at hand. I can create my own, but sometimes it is much easier and faster to just access from Bing. I was unaware of this feature.
I do quite a few pieces of artwork from pen and ink and pencil drawings to portraits and on and on. Just can't quite be satisfied to fit into a slot and be recognized as one who is pegged.
I am glad I found you on here.
I am not really here for the earnings, but for the associations and friendships that I can make.

Great post, thanks for sharing it with us. Thank you.

Thanks @joseph

I was searching for Steemit minnow dolphins and whales and found this!

Well, I am using pixabay and it's awesome!

Thanks for sharing very helpful

Thanks for taking the time to point this out!

Can it really be plagiarism free?

Looks like there's a new King in town.

Nice ending, btw.

Seeing you here just reminded me--who was it that you gave the comment of the day idea over to? I meant to follow them, but things have been seriously hectic :)

Excellent contribution to the community. Thank you!

Thanks a million. I sometimes used Pixabay. This is additional resources that I can used.

Thank you for this amazing technique @joseph
This will help so much and save so much time rather than always linking images and photographs to their sources.
That is one beautiful man you decided to search for haha

thanks for sharing this post @joseph

I am curious. Did Bing sponsor this post?

Has anyone else noticed that stock photography is 90% white people? Check out my little research project here:
https://steemit.com/race/@doyoueatdolphins/color-in-stock-photography

Thanks for the information

great information because everyone needed lot of stuff without copyright .

It can be difficult to find pictures and gifs to use without worrying--thanks for this, good find!

Good instructions about using Bing!

However, your terminology is not correct. This leads to a lot of misconceptions about images available on the web!

Royalty free does not mean free! It's a type of paid licensing! It simply means that once you purchase a license, as long as you follow the license guidelines, you don't have to pay again to use it. All the big agencies (apart from the microstock agencies) have both RM (Rights Managed) and RF (Royalty Free.) With Rights Managed, you pay for a license for certain specific uses e.g. a book cover. If you wanted to use the image again for inside the book, or in a magazine or something, you would need to pay again! With Royalty Free, you would not have to pay again!

You are talking about free or public domain images - not Royalty Free.

And I agree, that you still have to be very careful, because sometimes someone has listed an image as free, when in fact it is not, so you have to double check to make sure the image is not listed with any stock agencies, or is on someone's web site as part of their portfolio.
