Ups and Downs of Facebook and Steemit in my opinion

steemit vs facebook.pngIt was about more than 10 years ago when I first joined a big social media website, Hi5. It was very popular among Mongolians back then. After a year or two, I tried creating an account on Facebook. At that time, not many people in my country were using it, but soon afterwards, number of Mongolian Facebook users increased really fast, that in a matter of months almost all of my friends were on it. Hi5 became a long forgotten website quite fast as Facebook was very comfortable and easy to use compared to other social media sites at that time.

However, I did not like how much time I have been spending on it. I've tried to quit it numerous times but each time after a few days, weeks or so, I had to come back to Facebook. It was my responsibility to contact my family members and friends and at certain moment, Facebook was the only way to get things done.

As time passed, I started to be more aware of how Facebook is making a lot of money by selling our private information and using different means to keep us psychologically addicted to their website. Being in touch with every friend who is not around me is important, but the idea of being chained down to a website, where we are wasting most of our time was really disturbing. Something had to be done.

Last month, while reading about blockchain and cryptocurrency, I came across this new social media platform, Steemit. The thought of sharing high-quality content, rewarding each other with cryptocurrency, developing this new community together with everyone seemed to be really inspiring, much better than wasting my time on Facebook, reading short posts and comments, giving away my personal information to corporates and so on.

Currently, almost none of my friends are on Steemit. Everyone is still using Facebook, but I believe, that they will gradually join this community, as soon as they become aware, that there is a better alternative way to connect with others. In order to clarify main differences between them, I present you my personal key feature comparisons of current Steemit and Facebook.

Advantages of Facebook:
-Billions of active users (most of our acquaintances are among them)
-Very simple and easy to use
-Tons of features
-Everything work almost flawlessly
-Great for sharing everything with everyone
-Facebook account can be used for many other services on the Internet

Disadvantages of Steemit:
-Very few users, compared to Facebook
-Complicated in the beginning
-Far fewer features than Facebook
-Needs some improvement (still in beta)
-Steemit account is not popular enough to be used on other websites

Now the other way around.

Disadvantages of Facebook:
-Making business on our personal information
-Too much advertisement
-Usually posts are short and mostly meaningless
-Tons of fake accounts
-Wastes a lot of time
-No rewards
-One corporation behind everything

Advantages of Steemit:
-Secure
-No adds
-Most of the posts are meaningful
-Less fake accounts, thanks to the system
-We spend our time reading high-quality articles
-Rewards users with cryptocurrency
-Community is built on everyone's contribution

Steemit has lots of disadvantages now, but we have to consider that it is a fairly new project in comparison with the social media giant, that has been up there for more than a decade. Still, there are hundreds and thousands of people, who are willing to make Steemit a better place, whereas only one corporate is behind Facebook. In time, Steemit will surely become superior than Facebook, after all the foundation of these two websites are completely different: Facebooks main intent is to gather as many people as possible, so that they can get profit out from them, while Steemit aims to develop by getting people to write excellent materials and to support each other.

If we compare how users of these two platforms will be in 5 years, Facebookers will remain almost the same as now because Facebook will not change its system filled with advertisements and everything. However, Steemians will keep making more quality contents, improving over time by supporting each other’s ideas, Steem coin will get more expensive and Steemit will grow to every possibility of our imagination. That is why it is wiser to spend more time Steemiting than Facebooking.

I’ve quit Facebook once and for all. I disliked it for a long time and as soon after knowing about Steemit, I knew it was time to let Facebook go. Now after joining this social media platform, everyday I’m thinking about how can I improve my writing, how much more can I learn from others today, what else can I write and what can I do to for the good of others?

Writing blogs here taught me that writing don’t just tell others about what I love, but it also improves me in whole. It helped me to remember wise words of one Mongolian poet, he said:
Гурван ямхын хулсыг барьж,
эндүү ташаа бичих минь
Гутал оймсыг бартал явж
нэр ашгийг хөөхөөс дээр...

-Ванчинбалын Гулранс /Vanchinbalin Gulrans

Since translating poems is really hard, I'll just try to deliver you the main idea in English:
I would rather simply write than to run all day for fame and glory.
