I couldn't agree more. I've been involved in small scale event management and have worked closely with professional conference organisers, some of whom have become good friends, over the years. The common success factors I've observed are excellent project management underpinned by a maniacal attention to detail.

Detail is key. People notice it. I have been involved in event management myself. When I lived in Germany for my MBA I had a job at a catering business where we worked as waiters at big corporate and other events. Sometimes until 6 am. Was pretty hectic. German managers are quite strict sometimes.
