Flagging: Let's talk about it!

Let's have an open, civil discussion about flagging.....

I am not a steemian who goes out of my way to find posts to flag, but if I happen to view (either due to browsing my feed or due to someone alerting me) posts that are plagiarized, or posts that are making personal attacks/contain hate speech, I will dish out a flag.

I always give an explanation as to why I am flagging, and it is not something that I do very often. If I am being completely honest, I always feel like absolute shit after flagging, I would rather use my voting power to help people. Yesterday, it was brought to my attention that a guy was stealing content from two steemians that I consider friends, so I went and flagged his posts, and it turns out he didn't like that very much. He has now begun using me as a subject for his posts, and is spamming hate filled comments underneath my posts.

He clearly wants attention, so you can view his posts: here and also here

It should be noted that I have never spoken with this individual, nor have I called him any names. I did point out that he should stop being an awful human being (but in all fairness that was after he had called me a slew of names). I was not trying to bully him, I was simply letting him know that stealing is not acceptable.

It should also be noted that contrary to his claims, I do not and never have worked for steemcleaners.

Sidenote: I understand that some people abuse the ability to flag, and I will not address this in this article because I have no ideas about how to stop that.

Also also: do not flag people if you are low reputation and/or low steem power, retaliation flags happen often. Do not abuse your ability to flag, simply disagreeing with someone is not a valid reason to flag them.

Enough about me, let's talk

How do you feel about flagging?

  • Do you hate it?
  • Do you think it is a function that is needed?
  • How do you think it can be improved?
  • Have you ever flagged? If so, for what reasons?

I want to hear your thoughts!!!

As always all the love,

krazykrista

I threw a flag here or there for spammy comments and I call steemcleaners for it.

But stealing like this is for sure worth a big fat flag!

So did I, and I recommend anyone who hates spammers who steal content does the same thing. I wrote this thief a response to his questions on this same thread I found yours on.

I’m so sorry you’re under fire like this. I’ve seen it too often IRL and on social media, and even been a target myself.

Plagiarists are THIEVES. They are stealing from other creatives. When they steal content from other creatives, they are stealing an outpouring of someone’s soul. And, it’s been my experience, that when plagiarists are identified, they expose their own bone-deep callousness with vile retaliations just as those in which your plagiarizing-attacker has engaged.

Certainly, that’s what the person you identified has clearly done. When they do so, why do the social media platform admins and moderators permit them or their IPs access to continue their abuses?

Such people abuse a community and cast a cloud over every other interaction, casting suspicion upon every unknown/new social contact in that community. It is contrary to the very notion of “social media” communities. Steemit and all social media need much more responsive policies for dealing with such abusive behavior. The whole point of flagging is to identify abusers of the community for those responsible for moderating the site – if admins and moderators then leave things to deteriorate to the point where you or your friends who were plagiarized feel compelled to respond in such a public way, then the site is failing in their responsibilities to its community members.

And… new members like me, find ourselves wondering if the meager growth of our earnings warrants accepting the risk of being plagiarized and/or abused as you and your friends have been.

I hope your abuser’s stalking of you gets him/her banned permanently. Personally, I’ve muted that person and hope never find them near my own posts.

I agree with you @krazykrista

I think flagging is OK as long as it's serving the right purpose and not just a hobby feeling you're the boss.

The one thing i dont understand is why you people are behind normal people why you all dont give us freedom . One thing i want to ask have you got any right to check palagrism from dan or something?. Why you work as detective . And if no then you all are behind money by harrasing normal people . So my advice to you would be you should also post and earn rather then checking or interfeering in people life.

Wow, I think you have really offended him

i wasn't being offensive at all, but he certainly is.

True, but to him, it's like you really offended him, and I don't think he's going to stop

Well he is not getting anywhere with his current technique so I hope he sees that and stops before he makes things worse.

He will, eventually, but I think you should do something before it gets worse

What do you suggest I do?

I suggest you do NOTHING. :)

Eventually he's going to get his account flagged to 0 or less, that anything he writes will be invisible and will have no chance of earning rewards.

If the guy was smart, he'd stop acting like a thief and jerk, because he's not making any money doing it.

(I thought this guy wanted to make money)

We'll he has to be pretty dumb, because he's wasting so much time fighting with people and not getting paid. I wrote him a long comment above.

Sometimes you can't appeal to people who refuse to learn and must only find out things the hard way. Eventually if he continues he's going to get himself downvoted to nothing, and then we won't have to worry about him anymore.

He made one big mistake. He spammed and stole content from some of the most intelligent people and projects on steemit. Bad, bad move.

Yea, true, I couldn't have said it any better.

Hello friend, could u please upvotes my posts on my blog, thanks

hello kind miss and sirs, will you please follow me... AAAND BOOOOM flagged.. that thief has behavior not ready for blockchain yet, I mean behaving like a 3th world asshole who tries to call out on women and steels posts of people like @intelliguy just begs for a 3th reich response

I flagged people few times with my 0.01 vote and live to tell the story.
They were all comment in my posts. The kind of follow me, upvote me comments.
That was before I figure out that my downvote doesn't mean anything. In the other hand, my upvote does mean that the post I just voted is in my top ten of that day, because I only vote manually.

Every time you post derogatory remarks about me I will flag....every time I flag you lose reputation...you aren't helping yourself and you aren't really hurting me...you are however being ridiculous...

I flagged that post as well. That is probably the worst comment I've seen yet on steemit. But I feel like if I keep reading, I might find worse... :(
