I just started in on steemit and I get this nagging creepy feeling that this platform incentivizes social pressure and group think. Am I wrong and if so how? Does steemit just trade the tyranny of google and facebook gods for the tyranny of the majority?

You are right the fun part is figuring a way around peer pressure ;-)
This is an experiment and if we can figure a way out of age old moral dilemmas dealing with peer pressure and economic issues, steemit will be very beneficial, if not we are stuck in the same old behavior that's plagued humanity since the beginning of humans began organizing for power and profit from others suffering.
