New Tool - Find people worth following

Get your favourite authors, favourite authors.

Hey Everyone,

I've got something a little different for you today... I hope you like it as much as I do.

Ooh pretty, but... What does it do?

Alot in a small way. I wanted to find more users producing content I enjoy and relate to. I figured the best way to go about this would be to see who my favourite authors are following since we have similar interests and vioala!

What it really does:

  1. Gets all your voting history & a list of everyone you follow.
  2. Tallies all the data and returns the users that are statistically your favourite (most up voted) authors.
  3. Repeats step 1 & 2 for the top 5 users you vote for.
  4. Compares thier favourite lists to your own.
  5. Returns the popular authors that they follow and you don't. Ocassionally it will also include authors that you commonly vote for but don't follow. Try it out

Neat huh?

Personally I found the list of users recommended to me highly relevant. Sadly I will not be expanding the result set for the forseeble future. The proccess is messy.

To retrieve a small result set thousands of potential records are analysed and compared. That means in order to keep it accurate and have it respond to a request in an acceptable time frame I would have to put considerable effort into caching, background processing & monitoring aswell as maintain and optimise a very large database of aggregated and graphed user data. Oh... and I forgot to mention I am also inherently lazy.

Background Story:

Right now all the work is actually done in your browser, client side. This is actually a small part of a personal project I last worked on about 2 months ago, but I had to put it aside temporarily while I signed off a large work project and got divorced simultaneously. The code it's running was literally my proof of concept, for this I apologise - while it works I feel a bit like I've hung out my dirty laundry behind your DOM.

The idea behind the project is that I want to get as much value out the Steemit platform as I can with as little effort as possible. Personally I'm finding it increasingly more difficult to find posts and good authors that are of real value to me and didn't just get a Ned vote; Also finding new content aside, I hate to say it but Steemit does a really shoddy job of allowing you to actually follow the people you are following.

Often I get busy and go a week or two without reading any blogs and when I try to pick up from where I left off I have no idea which posts I have missed because they were paid out and went to the same place lost socks go to. This is a major peeve of mine since the earnings of a post have absolutley nothing to do with my choice to follow its creator.

TL:DR;

I said fuck it, challenge accepted. I was looking for an excuse to play with a decent dataset anyway and I actually like alot of the authors I follow so i decided to create tools to help me follow them and also find new content based on whatever topics are relevant to my current flavour of the month.

Hope you found it useful!

This is really a really cool tool! Thanks for creating and sharing this with us :)

This is really cool. It's the sort of tool that should be built into the Steemit site to help people find others to follow. There's a couple of tweaks that would improve it a little. It finds me as some of those people follow me back and also shows people from the original set who are followed by others. Thanks for doing this

FYI, the bugs fixed. It will no longer recommend you follow yourself

Now that's service!

Lol sorry I forgot to filter out the calling username. I literally wrote this late one night 2 months ago and havn't touched it since. I came across it yesterday and decided to put it in a pretty dress where other people can play with it aswell.
Yeah most of the stuff I write is a poor patch to fill a gap of some functionality I wish Steemit had, but I love them for giving me an excuse to. They are getting there... OMG! I just noticed I can see how many people view my post! :-D
Trying to work my way around thier image cache to get a view counter was how SteemPixel.com was born!

Don't forget to also prune your followers at Dead Followers.

Nice! Thanks, I didn't know about dead followers :-)

That is awesome. Thank you for this cool idea, now to go follow more people.

Very cool tool man! Thank you for putting in the effort!

Hmmm I seem to be getting some errors I get Uncaught TypeError: Object.entries is not a function twice in my console and nothing loads even after this has returned user loadedFollowers fired for raymonjohnstone >> raymonjohnstone followers loaded

Thats odd... I can pull your list just fine. What browser & version are you running? I wrote the script in chrome and havn't done any cross browser testing.

Just chromium on ubuntu. I can try it one more time.

Weird im also running ubuntu. It's ok I've already patched it., you wont be the only one with a problem. If you run it again you should have no problems now.

Just tried it again same thing, i tried it with a couple other accounts as well and the same result I am running chromium Version 53.0.2785.143 Built on Ubuntu , running on Ubuntu 14.04 (64-bit)

It's just caching the old version. I have cleared the server cache, shift +f5 should take care of your browser. Sorry about the hasle.

Awesome thanks man! Damn cache i swear it is the bane of a devs existence.

Sounds good, but the result is strange with my account.

Just ran you username. The results are actually fine, they only look weird because of a bug that allowed you to be returned as one of your top voters so it loaded the results twice.

I have fixed the bug. If you run the tool again it should look normal now. :-)

Thanks, now it looks fine.

But I think I'm already following some of the authors in the list, for example the first @knozaki2015 .

Try to use 4 tags...;)... If you use 5 tags, your post shows just in main category...

Really? That's such an odd one...
Thanks for hack!

No problem...:)...

just a comment. it recommends people i already followed. will be good if it does not.
otherwise, it's a good tool

Says i should follow @cheetah. Lol. I do like tool. Perhaps filter those i already follow.

nice, keep up the great work!
