When in Lagos, visit Epe...
Epe is a coastal town, located along the Lekki lagoon, within the tropic where the River Oni, Ogun and Osun empty their waters. Sharing its borders with three different towns, The town is about 96km from Lagos through Ibeju-Lekki on the Epe-Maroko express road; approximately 86km from Lagos via Ikorodu on the Epe Ito-Ikin-Ikorodu road; and 30km from Ijebu-Ode in Ogun State.
A visit to Epe town quickly reveals a haven of cultural and historical heritage, a fact the indigenous people pride themselves in. Like every other pre-colonial town or city, the history of Epe is deeply rooted in oral tradition, with every indigene you come across ready to excitingly dish out a version of folktale handed down his/her genealogical line.
Historians have it that Epe was founded in the 13th century. Amidst the different stories you might come across, one agreeable fact is this: Epe was named after a colony of ferocious black ants called ‘epe’, which were scattered across the land in its early days.
