PSA - Steemit Still Running Like Garbage, Eating Posts/Comments/Votes - COPY YOUR POST BEFORE YOU SUBMIT

in steemit •  7 years ago

PSA - BOTH posts I submitted today were DELETED with NO DRAFT SAVED.

Steemit's site functionality continues to be, at best, degraded. Slow loading times remain the norm, and aberrant behavior across the platform remains prevalent.

Both votes eventually make it, while both comments are deleted with no draft.

Here are a few problems I have been experiencing:

  1. Extremely long load times for posts, many timing out.
  2. Extremely long submission times for votes, some taking over a minute to register. Often they fail completely.
  3. Comments often time out after submission, and upon reloading, are NOT saved in your reply box. My success rate for comments is around 50%.
  4. Steemit just ate my second and third posts ever, nearly forcing me to recompose them from scratch.

Luckily, I keep a hard copy backlog.

You will notice when submitting replies and posts that you may experience a very long submission time (with the "spinning wheel of death"). MAKE SURE YOU COPY POSTS AND LONG REPLIES BEFORE SUBMISSION.

If you have already submitted a post that appears to be timing out, you can double-click the frozen submission box, hit Ctrl-A (select all), then Ctrl+C to cut. Paste that thing into a Word document asap, and save it, just in case.

As Morpheus said, "This is your last chance."

Also, this is another reason that extremely long comment replies (4-5+ paragraphs) should be broken up into multiple responses, to mitigate the risks involved in losing said comments to the server.

Overall, it might be another good day to take it a little slower on Steemit. I know that is what I will be doing.

Please note, this will delay my tending to my reply backlog. If you are waiting for a reply for me, I'll get to it...but probably not today.

If you have any additions or errata for this post, please let me know! I will see that they are voted to the top of the comments, and will make the appropriate edits (if possible).

This was in my 'when Steemit gets up and running' file. So, it's a bit out-of-time; but timely just the same.

Ahhhh @lexiconical…You have a way of posting that makes one lol…literally!

I’m reminded that I had to do a snapshot of two of my posts that went into the infinitely looping swirl…lol…smh…

Thankfully, I was able to repost and remind self to write in Word, and cut/paste.

I’ve been off sight for ~40 hours; and can say I, as well as many Steemians, empathize with your frustration.

On learning of the assault on the site, I was instantly mindful of people who earn a decent living on this platform; and how, for many this was just a reason to focus attention on something else; but for others, a hit on their bottom line.

It’s a few hours since your post; and, hopefully things are getting better.

It’s good that they see the holes in the site early on; but, the fact that they were attacked lets everyone know, someone sees Steemit as a force to be reckoned with!

@lexiconical I know it may not be your goal; but, your tone in writing makes me laugh; and, I can ALWAYS appreciate a non-hateful reason to laugh.

good day to take it a little slower on Steemit

I thought about that, too. In fact, I think most people have applied the ‘know when to fold ‘em’ rule for the day.

Peace.

Steemit just deleted my first reply. Looks like it may be happening again.

"for many this was just a reason to focus attention on something else; but for others, a hit on their bottom line."

Indeed. I guess I'm a bit of both. I've become a bit (more) of a workaholic since Steemit, and since Steemit is 7 days a week, the occasional forced "mental health day" is not so bad.

"I know it may not be your goal; but, your tone in writing makes me laugh; and, I can ALWAYS appreciate a non-hateful reason to laugh."

Thank you, I do aim to put comedy in all my writing. It's tough online, without tone, body language, etc. I work even better for a live audience.

steemit seems to be running like windows 3.1 on dialup

Oh wow, that takes me back. I loved my Windows 3.1 computer.

It was actually pretty sweet. The one I had before it had two 5.25" floppy drives, but no hard drive, and only DOS.

and maybe 4mb ram..LOL

Oh, wow, if it had RAM at all it would have probably been measured in KB at that point!

Sorry to hear that you are having these issues... For what it's worth, I now write all my posts in Pages (the mac equivalent to Word) and then copy + paste them into the steemit post form.

That way if a post disappears into the ether (which has only ever happened once to me) - I won't have any problem. I can just post it again.

This is a good workflow plan. I use Open Office, but basically the same thing.

I had that issue yesterday too when steemit was experiencing problems.
I have learned, from being an online writer for years, to copy and save what you have before hitting send, post, etc. I have lost WAY too many articles when I didn't have a back-up.

You said it! I only had to lose one article at Steemit before I began to innately distrust the auto-save. (Oddly, it saves a headline I never posted and always loads that everytime.)

Thanks for stopping by!

That's a good point about comment replies. I save the drafts for my posts, but I should do that for my replies as well. Usually I am replying as soon as I read the piece when my thoughts on it are fresh.

Sometimes if I am composing a lengthy piece on my phone I will draft in a text editor app first to avoid a) prematurely submitting my piece or comment, and b) so I can better proofread my work before submitting.

And so I just followed that process for this comment so as to get in the habit of doing that for this site as well.

Thanks, @lexiconical.

Glad you found the suggestion helpful!

I experience this a lot. Just even trying to give you an upvote just now took some time. I believe I spoke about the Steemit platform's future. Definitely would like to see this interface progress. Still in my JAVA class, trying to be more proactive in things like these.

At least this time the explanation was a malicious outside DDoS attack, as opposed to an internal problem.

Wonderful and spot on post.

In the face of this, I'll advise you to use external markdown editors for composing your posts.
Various online and offline markdown editors exist out there which offers more features than steemit editor - you can Google about them.

As for the other issues that the site is experiencing, some are browser based. I believe all this issues will be sorted out by the programmers sooner or later. As we know, steemit is becoming better more than what was obtainable last year.

I pray this community keeps growing wider and better

Happy Steeming

"Various online and offline markdown editors exist out there which offers more features than steemit editor - you can Google about them."

Good suggestions. I currently use Markdownpad2 and Open Office.

I'm glad to see it's not just me having these problems. I was having problems signing on to Netflix and my bank account so first I thought it was my computer but go figure the POLONIEX Site was running as smooth as could be.

"the POLONIEX Site was running as smooth as could be."

Watch out for Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

Please don't tell me you are actually writing your posts in the steemit editor! no... wait... I just took a deep breath and realize you were making the point.

No, I keep most of them backed up. Sometimes I work drafts up in the editor - the auto-save is a lot more reliable than the post function!

I immediately backup my post after reading this lol. Yesterday I had problems with powering up. It took forever, so I just had to cancel it. Also, I thought I was the only one who had his comments disappear.

I am not sure what's up, but I hope this won't continue.

I am going to copy this comment now, lets hope it reaches you with one try :D

EDIT: it did :)

"I am not sure what's up,"

It was a DDOS attack at Steem. Seems to have been resolved now.

Seemed is an illusion :P

Thanks for the heads up. I haven't experienced that, but glad to know it could happen before it surprises me.

I have particular problems with comments. 6 days later, I'm still losing comments and have to store each one on the clipboard after submission.

Delighted to hear that I am not the only one who was having problems! The whole site was under the DOS attack.

Yep, it was affecting everyone.

i like you posts dude <3

What is it
