EOS is getting tons of hate also. I noticed the my best investments where always the most hated coins. Ethereum people can't stand DPOS systems (Steem, Bitshares, EOS) b/c they have been brainwashed to think it's centralized. Back in 2014 the same non-sense was spewed out by Bitcoin Maximalist in regards to Ethereum ICO being a scam. That ICO turned out to be the best one in history with the first week price being just .35cents per ETH. I also keep hearing Steem potential competitors talking about how much better they are going be than Steemit. Ono is making a lot of extremely optimistic claims about how they will have millions of users very quickly after launch. The thing about Steem most outsiders don't get is Steem community and development is aware of the whale problem and there are solutions coming out to fix that - SMTs being the main focus since it allows a Steem economic system to be tailored to suit the needs of it users. We will see hybrid system emerge with a combination of account based voting and stake weighted voting. The Steem Blockchain is the center for it all. Steemit just the first SMT (dapp) on the Steem blockchain happens to be the most popular but I believe this year we'll likely see even more popular apps emerge built on top of Steem.

Dtube, Dlive, even a Dporn are examples of other popular apps built on Steem. Dlive the last I checked is exploding in popularity via Alex search rankings. SMTs would be something like Appics built on Steem blockchain but using their own token. This is similar to how ETH works with ERC-20 tokens. Steem has large network and specially in Social Media. For competitors it only gets harder by the day. I am not saying a major competitor to Steem will not emerge but its going to be an uphill battle.

Also, one blockchain does not have to die for the other ones to succeed. This space huge. There's room for several decentralized Social Media platforms.

Keep in mind that ALOT of accounts were made before the platform was even up (lots of good account names etc) also a lot of people have created hundreds if not thousands of accounts for re-selling, investing etc (like hoarding domain names)
So there are not 1 million people using this platform. The number is probably more like 200-300k. Which is cool, but not a lot.
That being said..Steem is absolutely one of the best platforms, and I think it is strange that not more people use it. Just the fact that you MIGHT earn some by blogging should attract people. But, people are skeptical and the responsiblity of passwords and transactions etc scares a lot of people.

Because 67% have given up after discovering it only pays whale accounts.
