My 1st Video About Steem To My 384,177 Youtube subscribers, LMK What You Think?

in steemit •  8 years ago  (edited)

Alright so I know this new video could possibly come off a little biased but it's difficult not to be with the incentives that Steem gives its content creators. Even though with all of this, I am still looking for your honest feedback and constructive criticism . Be brutal if you have to because I only had a few days to research all the information for this video and can only be my best with an honest amazing community like yourself.

Peace and Respect,
Luke

How To Get Rid Of Censorship And Privacy Violating Ads

In this video Luke Rudkowski talks about what he sees as a social media revolution and a new platform that could be a game changer. We go over how our independent news organization has been screwed over by all social media and how ads are making time online annoying. We discovered Steem a social network based on the blockchain that is a decentralized reddit like platform where users gain and create value with their comments, upvotes and original content. We have just withdrawn money from the steem account and it's legit. So just by signing up and upvoting our content you help sustain this independent news organization financially without spending a single dollar, without any checks or credit cards given out. It costs nothing and would mean a lot for us if you could do that for us.

There is no down voting on Steemit, only flags! Please guys get this right! There is a very good reason there is not any down voting, which an example is the conversation I am seeing above on this tread. The designers of this platform thought this through. Down voting was determined to be very bad for social cohesion. The only thing available is UP voting and FLAGS, and flags are ONLY meant for violation of the rules, not for dislike of posts. Again there is a very real reason it is set up this way. If you dislike a post, just don't up vote!!

Do you know if there's a penalty for flaging posts that don't violate the rules? If not, I think that needs to change.

I agree. In general the whole flagging process needs

  1. accountability
  2. clear parameters

The current penalty (and only one available) is that the account that is abusing the flagging option is likely going to receive flags on their post until they abide by the flagging rules.

@tuck-fheman Thanks for the information. That penalty is wholly insufficient in my opinion. If someone flags my post when it shouldn't have been flagged, and my only option is to retaliate by falsely-flagging their post, I'm not going to flag their post out of fear of retaliation.

By "the only one available" do you mean there are no other options that would be possible to implement in the future? Or do you mean it's the only option available at this time.

By "the only one available" do you mean there are no other options that would be possible to implement in the future? Or do you mean it's the only option available at this time.

It's the only option available at this time.

If someone flags my post when it shouldn't have been flagged, and my only option is to retaliate by falsely-flagging their post, I'm not going to flag their post out of fear of retaliation.

This is when you can enlist the help of a whale or two or three. There are bots that could also help until the flagging abuser gets the point. I'm not saying it's the best option, but currently it is the best option if they will not remove the flags.

Exactly! "flags are ONLY meant for violation of the rules"

Plagiarism and Spam would fall under "violation of rules" which flagging is intended to address.

How can flags be for violating the rules when there are no rules?

Flags are for abuse, which we judge for ourselves individually just as we judge value in upvotes.

Thanks so much for your post as we need to get this straight in out minds and abide by the rules.

Absolutely no problem. Glad to help. The platform is sorely missing in basic instruction and guide lines. I expect this will change soon.

I'm trying to get more people to use this platform? What did I do wrong? I think I'm missing something here.

  ·  8 years ago (edited)

You're good luke.

Maybe you are referring to my comment on your recent post. I was making the point that there is no down voting on Steemit. Your video mentioned down voting, and what I think you meant was flagging. Many of us are used to the up/down vote concept because of other popular social media. Steemit is better. It is clearly thought out and set up to create the most socially cohesive, synergetic and effective community in social media. Thus, no down vote.

Absolutely no problem. Glad to help. The platform is sorely missing in basic instruction and guide lines. I expect this will change soon.

Maybe an "Idiot's Guide To Steemit" is in order.

  ·  8 years ago Reveal Comment

I have to agree @dollarvigilante. I appreciate all your work and everything--but I do think it is wrong to mischaracterize everything as being the fault of @berniesanders. There was a long line of people who apparently flagged you.

There is a reason for this: They did not value the post! So instead of complaining spend your time creating more content that you think they will LIKE! This is the free market man and you are starting to sound like you are crying because one of your posts didn't make it?

Obviously if you dislike the results compared to your other posts, it would be a good idea to consider changing tactics (if the loss of money is what concerns you). Otherwise you can keep posting things that a large cross section of the community will value less than you do and know that it is not going to be censored as it is logged on a blockchain (which is precisely the most powerful aspect of this system).

Love you bro but wholly disagree that you were censored.

And dont forget...if sentiment changes...others will upvote it more over time (you can still get paid from a post for 4 more weeks after the first payout!) and a consensus will be reached. :)

Fuzzy, much respect, but on this one I think your view is going to create problems for this platform for in the future. Mind you , I'm not taking about your view on the quality of DollarVigilantes posts, on that I may somewhat agree. However, I am referring to the fact that fagging is being used as down-voting, and by the whales no less! Please review your stance and consider the future implications of this. It can be disastrous. Very likely to end up like "Reddit with a paycheck". One must ask, if this is the intent, why no down arrow? Be that as it may, I must say that if this is in fact the structure and policy, then I may have indeed been somewhat mistaken regarding my opinion of the genius of the platform.

On another note, will KenCode be on a hang-out anytime soon?

To the folks upvoting this comment, this type of ad hominem (personal attack) has no place on Steemit. Even if you agree with the sentiment, please consider whether this is the type of vibe you want to encourage.

  ·  8 years ago (edited)Reveal Comment

This is tacky and disrespectful.

I don't think he's a bad person. His intent was to help he was just overwhelmed by success and it came off wrong, this is a well thought assumption of course. I posted close to 1200 post on here and some in which had great content hours to do and even days to complete a short fiction book, and some was fast posts to get a quick point or opinion out.The day come I make 1000 bucks shit I might think I'm steemit rich too lmao! Let's not condemn the dollarV too much, it's the whales who pays us not anyone else. They don't like many others content not just mine, so be cool and do it for the experience:)

is there UP flagging?

Flagging for being a dick.

You need to take a deep breath and actually read the post, it's sarcasm gold..

I didn't get it!

Why did a post, which is gibberish, get $9?

Wait Bernie Sanders? I'm lost

@berniesanders is an account on steem that has alot of steem and doesn't seem to agree with jeff's last post.

I don't have a dog in this race, but am glad we can keep it civil and not resort to mud flinging :)

  ·  8 years ago (edited)

I Agree!
Wow, The comments on Jeff/Lukes posts are like a mini Steemit environment all on there own.....! :-)

LOL.. you and Jeff thought you would be free from the burn! Remember, their are Sheep as far as they eye can see! Don't worry, the bulk of the share holders hold either an open mind or support you. It is no different here, we need to wake people up they don't understand you and Jeff and why it is important. If they did they would be a whole not more tolerant of the small stuff. Just be professional and put your energy into positive stuff and let this distraction fade away. We don't need to explain the indoctrination many people suffer from, I'm sure you know this well.

I'll look forward to that post, should be quite enlightening!!

Thank you

I am dipping my toe. About to watch your video.

Thanks for sharing and educating my tiny brain, Appreciate it

dont't worry it's cool post for me :-)

Okay, it's great that you're getting the message out. However it's important to set expectations at the right level.

(1) 25% of rewards go to voters not 50%

(2) Newbies with little SP will not make much (if any money) by upvoting

Join and you can earn $20 in SP through one vote, by voting early.

This is virtually impossible for someone who only has $7 worth of STEEM.

I've touched on this in previous posts. It would take months to turn $7 to $20 by voting alone.

There is no need to hard sell Steemit. The proposition is a simple one, your viewers can do what they are currently doing on YouTube (commenting, liking, posting response videos etc), however (unlike YouTube, Twitter, Facebook etc) they get an opportunity to share in the rewards and success of the platform. Also well as rewarding you for providing great content.

They can also earn rewards if they post content that people enjoy and upvote. However the rewards that a low SP holder can get by purely upvoting are so small that it isn't really a selling point.... If they gain more SP then that's a different story.

If your viewers fully engage with the platform, post, vote, comment, contribute... then yes they could reap greater rewards. However just being part of a community that rewards content owners directly and stimulates great conversation should be plenty to encourage people to get on board.

Thanks for the clarification, I was wrong and heard disinfo then. I will make these important updates on the next content I make about steem.

I like it when people are warned: Don't expect to make anything, many posts make a penny. Then add some tips..

@nanzo-scoop, thanks for clarifying the rewards for the curators. Hopefully, your comment gets more upvotes so more people can see the correction. @lukewearechange I'm sure it's a bit of a hassle but if you could update it soon that would be great - I'm sure everyone would prefer not to give out the initial wrong impression and because of it have new people cry foul when they don't get the curator rewards that you mentioned in the video.

I think it is quite good. I love how everyone is promoting steemit big time. Steemit getting bigger and bigger and more and more members, better for everyone. :D

There is power in numbers

how long before Facebook starts censoring steemit links... hmmm?

Great video, thanks for posting! I do need to point out a couple innaccuracies and clarifications:

You said: You as the author gets 50% and the other 50% goes to the curators. That is incorrect. Beginning back on July 4th, authors get a minimum of 75%. Authors will also get some of the curation award depending on who upvoted and how soon after the post was created that they upvoted.
https://steemit.com/steem/@abit/new-curation-reward-algorithm-huge-penalty-to-early-voters

You also said: You could get $20 just by upvoting my post. While true, that is not to be expected, nor even possible, if the upvote is by someone with very little steam power. Yes, if you have a million dollars worth of steam power, you could easily make $20 by upvoting. However, if you're brand new to the platform, you might make a fraction of a penny by upvoting your post at the right time.

Awesome job on the video Luke this is great, I love hearing how excited people get when they truly understand the value/potential of the platform.

Happy to hear you're holding onto steempower too, this is still such early days and having the extra influence now could make a big difference later :)

The more people know about Steemit , the more will come and see the beauty of this place. It's time to change the internet.

Steemit is here!
Thanks for this work. Btw. I would appreciate if you have a look at my latest story I wrote :)

you have seen the light.

Light indeed and a way off of this slippery slope
In a world of closing doors finally we see hope
They label and imprison our mind
Slavery is still here but a different kind

Steem and steemit have shown us a way
We must fight and insure it is here to stay
We know they will come for it is a likely choice
If we can hold them back the world will rejoice

I said the same of bitcoin and I gave into fear
I didn't pay $0.005/btc with my money that's dear
So sure was I that the government would slay
In fear and fiat currency I elected to stay

Now almost a decade later I know regret
Next time I see the obvious I'll not fret
Into my vision I suddenly saw steem
I knew it was as bitcoin I could see the gleem

This time I will not run from fear
This time I will hold what is important near
I hope you'll all stand with me and fight
Together we can end this government blight

Awesome Luke, we need more educational material to help the new folks. Most that I have seen is a little too tech heavy for novice users. I know the team is working hard on simplifying the system.

I think they just underestimated the power and appeal of the platform!

@hilarski I wrote an educational piece here

A good problem to have ;-)

Outstanding! This platform really looks like it is about to take off. I love the idea of using other media promote steem, it looks like it's working out for you!

Awesome promotional video. Really appreciate it.

One quick correction: there are no down-votes in Steemit. (it is actually best for social cohesion not to have down vote). There is only flagging for violation of rules an social consensus.

Thanks for producing this video. up voted and following!

Thanks I will make that correction in the upcoming content I create.

Brand new here. Came over after seeing your vid on yt. How do you vote??

Took me a minute to find it too but it's actually the carrot (^) symbol with the circle around it... It should be under this text and just to the left of a dollar amount.

gamerx, Thank you so very much for the help. i got it now. Thanks again.

Awesome video Luke! nicely explained and how it works and what are the perks of using steem :) thanks for growing this community!

I have been following luke for months now, and now im here because of you luke. Thank you. Keep up the great work. I support everything you do.

This is fantastic luke, you are awesome for spreading the word about all this! Finally a market environment where we can all help each other out in a big way

I have followed you on YouTube for some time now. I'm glad you found steemit. I have posted some of your older video on here with links to YouTube. Hope you're not offended by that, but you always say like, share, and subscribe. Keep up the great work.

@lukewearchange while I think using the two images of women that you chose is effective for drawing attention to your post, it perpetuates sexist objectification of women and I'd like to encourage you to consider other methods for getting attention to your posts.

Yep, be careful @lukewearechange.

I lost all of my post rewards for creating that marketing meme and posting it here (among other social media sites) a few months ago. A Founder of Steem downvoted all of my rewards away, despite that marketing meme being viewed over 20,000 times in a matter of weeks on other social media sites and obviously catching some prominent peoples attention.

It caused quite the brouhaha back then from a certain vocal small percentage of Steemians. Despite the numerous upvotes versus one downvote a post receives, you can lose all of your rewards if that one downvote is from a large stakeholder, as @dollarvigilante has recently learned.

I have experienced this unfortunate occurrence of losing all rewards on a post on numerous occasions here for simply marketing Steem in a fashion with which the Founders did not agree, despite my efforts success in bringing in new users from other social media sites.

This is not a complaint against the platform, simply a warning that you need to be careful how you market Steemit, at least here on Steemit. Do what you like on other social media sites because you can't lose money there, nor can you make money there like you can on Steemit. ;)

Thanks for sharing this story! Very eye opening . I think big steak holders having this power is actually a good thing for helping to protect the platform from things that will undermine credibility.

"big steak holders"

;)

Lol

Very funny.

Typos are not my strong suit.

But with great power comes great responsibility.

What happens when someone has a differing political viewpoint?

I agree, with great power does come great responsibility. I think down voting content could be abused. I'm almost done reading the white paper and I don't see anything in the white paper that explains how to prevent down voting from being abused. I do wonder if that will become an issue over time.

We are steemit, we are change :)

Finally s place where the government s' fingers don't reach.

The government has some long creepy claws, doesn't it...

Glad to see such a positive impact. The non-censorship thing is tremendous and when people realize the power it has, it might just bring a new awakening.

This video influenced me to get steemit.

Very interesting video.
Realy good work

Welcome Luke. I've been following you for a long time and I love getting the news from you! I haven't turned my TV on since January. I probably never will again since the news the media tells is half truths, if that! I'll be following you here now!

Awesome!

Still listening to your video. Don't know if this has been pointed out.
The money on your post. Half does not necessarily go to people that commented. The amount that comes out of it depends on how much people up voted comments. Say I comment and my comment is now $1. $1 will be listed in your total for the blog entry. If your post is listed at $100 you will get $99 and I will get $1.

However, HALF of what you get is going to SBD. The other HALF goes into STEEM POWER based upon current value of STEEM. So if you got $100 pay out... you would get $50 SBD, and $50 Worth of Steem Power... if STEEM was currently worth about $2/steem you would get 25 steem power.

I hope that helped.

EDIT: You can also get STEEM faster than a week by clicking on the menu to the right of your AVATAR and then click on MARKET. You can buy STEEM on the market almost instantly here and convert SBD to STEEM. I did the wait a week thing the first week I was on the site. This is much faster.

As to Steem Power for voting... it doesn't seem to give much in curator rewards until you've gotten at least 50 Steem Power. (this is my observation so far). Steem Power also grows just by having it without you doing ANYTHING.

EDIT 2: I may not be 100% on how the payout happens, but it doesn't seem to be a 50% or even 25% that is taken from posts. It seems more based upon how comments below were upvoted, but their value is added to the total. That seems to be what is happening from 4 weeks of observation, but I could easily be wrong. Clear as mud at the moment. :) It is in beta and a great time to join if you're willing to help make this place better.

I love it as always I really love your Luke, really admire your courage and tenacity when reporting the truth that mainstream media does not, I came here from your latest youtube video, I have good hopes of this new place <3

Upvoted and like your video. One thing though internally is a little debate over NSFW tagged items being made invisible when it is the leading tag. So completely uncensored... maybe not. A great platform though.

You are correct. Yet there is also the case where people should be able to opt into seeing that. I've been here about 4 weeks. The first week someone posted their first image as a very close up and graphic blow job. So as you are cruising through the links there is a blow job going on in the list without you ever opting into seeing it.

Was it censored? No it can't be.

Even if they make that NSFW invisible it is still not censored. It may be censored here on steemit.com which is simply ONE window into the blockchain, and the source code is open source. So if someone wanted to make another website viewing the blockchain they could optionally make all of that stuff visible.

I will not be surprised to see people add serialized data into posts at some point and certain websites know how to interpret that as well. That's make it highly extensible. There may already be a mechanism to do that. Essentially using non-visible meta data to extend the functionality.

The key about the can't censor is that the information cannot be deleted from the blockchain. People could build a website that censors a lot of what is in the blockchain, yet it is still there and all you have to do is use a website that doesn't censor to see it.

We can't force our view upon everyone. Yet it seems we don't have to.

I completely agree with the reasons for it not being made visible. I agree also very much with making some content tags require opting in to be able to see. I just didn't care to see that it was completely removed from visibility without any related information as to why. It really becomes then more a case of "we are doing this for your own good" which I don't think historically has worked out well. I would like to have seen it handles a different way is all. I had not considered however, and thank you for addressing, the fact that it was removed from steemit.com and not the blockchain.

You are correct. People can make their own sites using this technology and any content they want to share.

Yes the blockchain is where the true revolution is happening. Steemit.com is but the current most popular window for interfacing with that. :) I suspect we'll see a variety of sites interfacing the blockchain in the future. Someone could make an ArtSteem website or something that ONLY showed posts tagged art. Really, the sky is the limit.

It is a big deal.

Oh I agree. I just hadn't thought about all angles yet and I appreciate being set straight on the matter

I shall stop promoting this site to my ten year old son.

Great post. One thing, I would use better tags. Words like "how" and "to" are called stop words and dont add anything to how many people will see this post. I would replace them with related words that people actually may search for.

Luke.......... you the man.

make the internet great again
now we net meganet to come out

Thank you Luke! Just signed up after seeing your video on YouTube. Excited to get rolling on steemit :)

Wow! I love it! Thanks for the info.

This was helpful a helpful video, Thank you.

What do i think? I think its great. Good to see you here

WOOHOO!! Welcome Luke!! :)

Brilliant Luke - still trying to get my head round this - yours is the best explanation I've seen so far - good work as ever!

How about you give back to the community by reflecting on their questions they ask you?
I suppose you got better and more important things to do in life, but giving something back to us would be appreciated since all of us give you something.

What do you mean I'm answering questions now

  ·  8 years ago (edited)

Hey there. When you posted your introduction post you earned around 5000$. I am one of the people with general admiration for volunteers and was an early voter. Asked you what inspired you to become one. Along with me, there were people also asking sincere questions which you haven't answered. So conclusion could be that you are only promoting yourself. As said in previous post I could understand that you have more important things than answering questions, like helping others so it can be right. But not answering your general public seems rude. I wanted to bring that up in your conscience so that you know for future and asked you a question about answering questions or commentaries. There are 6,360 active accounts here in last 24 hours so up to 300 commentaries that biggest posts get shouldn't be hard to scroll through and answer to up to 50 questions per blog especially since they give value to your work and not ads or corporations.

am first on steemit and its your post on facebook brought me here . The post actually gave me a little of idea about the potential of the platform. There have been many platforms like this which would offer content creators certain percentage from what they earn but am still skeptical about steemit hype ... but I must agree that there needs to be a social media revolution and concept like steemit gives a further push towards such future where content creators on any social media gets the value returned for their precious time and content they spent on. Thank you for your post.

Hi, I already followed you on youtube and really just want to say thank you for introducing me into this platform. If it wassent for you guys, I would probably never find such an awsome platform with no censorship. So thank you, and kep up the good work!!!

Thank you for showing me the website !

Nice!

I have been on this site for a couple of weeks, and I am also a teacher. I think this video has too much information that might overwhelm some listeners. I would linearize this information into several videos.

Thank you for all you do!

Thanks for the information. Hopefully this avenue of information will not get corrupted by the forces of disinformation like FB YT and Twitter. Anything with "twit" in the name should have been figured out sooner

Thank you for the heads up Luke!

This is huge. Hopefully your fans will follow you here:)

Luke, thanks so much for this information and for all you do! So happy to support you in this way.

Thank you for this post. It is very interesting and confirms what I have been thinking. I look forward to more from you and seeing how Steem fares going forward.

Thanks to you and @dollarvigilante I heard about this platform. Seems really cool and I'm excited to see what comes from it.

Love it!

Thanks Luke! I've hesitated posting anything via social media due to the recent censoring by the elites. Nonetheless, you've lead me to something new and hopefully game changing. Keep up the good work bud.

I LIKE IT!!!

Fine work, as always, Luke. Great to be introduced to this platform, and have a method for supporting quality content. Censorship, both actual and algorithmic, in SM is becoming a real problem.

Is there a way to upload video yet?

I don't wanna use youtube unless I have to...

Steemit change everything

New to this platform, but I am seeing more and more familiar faces. Great post by the way. I am upvoting and sharing. I want others to see the value that I do!

Thank you for introducing me to this platform. I know it has to be better than reddit.

Luke, Thanks for the info packed short and to the point video. I'm not even sure how to down-vote a post. Can someone explain? And what stops down-votes from people who just want to be mean. I've posted content (all original my own) and had several up-votes with literally $0.00 value awarded. Does anyone know why?

Thank you Luke for letting us YouTube folk know about this site!

Thanks, Luke!! Great article and video. The internet is slowly dying, or it is being killed to be exact. Steem is the future!

Thanks for putting out this video on youtube, it's what got me here in the first place. Now if I can only figure out how to follow you on steemit....
