Project MOOC - "Knowledge should be free"

in steemit •  8 years ago  (edited)

Dear Steemit Community,

Two days ago I presented a proposal to the German Steemit community, today I want to address the English speaking community and everyone else, that wants to support this project.

In my opinion, knowledge should be for free and accessible to everyone on our planet, unfortunately this isn't the case very often.
I want to make an advance in order to change the current "status quo".

What do you think of creating an MOOC Project (massive open online course, similar as Udemy, Coursera, etc.) on the Steemit Platform (this also could be interesting for long term monetisation, as content doesn't obsolesce that fast).

I already started with Project1000 (an approach to learn 1000 Spanish words together; grammar and exercises will be added) and I am planning to launch a Webdevelopment course (HTML, CSS and JavaScript) on Steemit in the next days.

What is your opinion ? What are your ideas ? I am very thankful for any suggestions or critics, please don't hesitate to post them here, anything could be very helpful !

It's a good idea but it takes a lot of work to develop a course. Most courses developed by individuals and small companies are proprietary just for that reason. I do like the idea and will consider it with by set of expertise.

That would be awesome, what courses would you consider ?

I'd say something to do with survivalist techniques.

Sounds interesting. Let me know when you start :)

I don't know if I could make a full course myself. If we had a collaboration platform here on Steemit, or at least something similar to a message board, we'd be able to combine forces and make a good one.

Good idea, I will think about a solution :)

I love the idea! we started developing a steemEDU platform (it's hard getting things like this up and running with a full time job though!)

It looks very interesting, I will have a look into it. Would be great if we can develop something like this :)

I am not sure what 'knowledge should be free' means. It sounds like a slogan with little or no meaning. I wonder also how it ties in with your suggestion of 'long term monitisation'!!

That said, knowledge could be made more widely available and at lower cost. I would support that.

I actually don't think knowledge should be free. It is a commodity and should be traded like any other commodity. Those who have knowledge should be renumerated for passing it on. Why not? You might just as well say that food should be free.

Thanks @bradenford for your feedback.
Maybe "knowledge should be free" is a provoking thesis, as you also get compensated on Steemit. Your statement:"Knowledge could be made more widely availabe and at lower cost" seems to be more adequate.
IMO online learning content doesn't obsolesce that fast (same goes for many other fields). I think we already discussed on Steemit an approach of rewarding short/long term content different, this would provide an incentive for more quality content.

Thanks for your reply.

On the substance of your proposal, I guess one question is 'what can online learning provide that reading a book can't?' The MOOC model doesn't seem to have addressed that very well. I would suggest that what the internet can give is a sense of community. Mostly we learn more from fellow students than from teachers. In the 19th century Cardinal Newman criticised the new University of London because it was only an exam body, and he felt that residence - students having contact with each other - was more important than exams.

This, I think, is were MOOCs and online courses fall down. If you can find a way for students to interact in a meaningful way, maybe by forming them into small groups who can be in contact and nag each other, 'How many of the 1000 words have you learnt today?', then you might make progress.

I see MOOC more as another medium to study. Of course you can learn many things by reading a book, but let's face it many younger people prefer more dynamic/interactive ways of studying.
Bringing people together seems to be a motivating aspect. How would you do it in a meaningful way ?

I am not sure how you can bring people together. I guess the idea would be to create study groups or something like that.

@mallorca Followed and voted! You follow me @Sandra16

Thanks @sandra16 do you also have some suggestions ?

Honestly not, since I'm new to Steemit but when I understand a little more of the subject and I can think of something, I'll tell you ... Regards!

Awesome, thanks a lot :)
