Check out <hack.ether.camp> at https://hack.ether.camp
It's a 4-week team-based virtual hackathon with a Grand Prize of $50,000.
My suggested idea is as follows but I could be convinced to join another awesome Steem team:
Vitalik Buterin had an awesome idea with smart contracts but immediately made a huge mistake in creating a new Turing-complete language rather than choosing one that could be formally verified (Rice's Theorem explains why you must choose one or the other). Ethereum is also much too tightly intertwined with the mess called The DAO which started with a bad economic model and then got hacked because smart contracts are still in their infancy.
Bitcoin's transaction rate is way too slow - I started a transfer from Coinbase to Steemit 45 minutes ago and I'm still waiting. I'm sure that Bitcoin isn't going to go away anytime soon -- too many people have too much invested and it's still great for large transactions -- but even if it gains value over the next year or two, its long, slow decline is now inevitable.
Steem could take them both and we can make it happen faster . . . .
