Steemians….don’t be seduced by the Dark Side!

My experience so far with Steemit has been a very positive one. That is, until recently when a spat between members went public. I was actually quite turned off by how the whole situation turned out and I felt it necessary to speak out.

First of all, if you have a beef, or an issue with someone, be respectful and keep it between you and that person. Let’s not turn Steemit into another Facebook or Twitter where negativity has taken center stage. There are very few posts on Facebook that don’t turn into flame wars.

Let’s not belittle.

Let’s not bully.

Let’s not shame.

Let’s not be the other guys.

I have seen so much and have learnt so much on Steemit that it truly has a unique feel. I have engaged in great conversations with other members both in comments in the chat rooms. I have not had one negative experience with another member.

People support, encourage and RESPECT each other.

Look, I am not saying that everyone needs to like each other because let’s face it, we are human and we won’t all be best friends. But we can RESPECT each other. Posing threats, posting private chat conversations and then subsequently attempting to gain support from other members to demean and publicly shame another member is childish.

If you disagree with someone, engage in constructive conversation. And no, “You’re an idiot” or “That was the dumbest thing I’ve read” are not constructive. Those comments serve one purpose: To incite a negative follow up reaction and then it’s FLAME ON!!

There is a much simpler and respectful solution. Unfollow and don’t upvote their posts anymore. Simple as that. Much less effort involved as well!

So please, let’s be respectful and enjoy what we have in Steemit. A very diverse, interesting and creative community. Steemians, we aren’t the other guys so let’s not turn to the Dark Side.

Children, must we turn this car around? I will turn this car around if I have to!

Heh :D

Sharing ideas and discussions with others who share wholly different perspectives is the best way to expand your horizons. We're all people, all with different information. Let's be good little living-neurons and share ideas without prejudice. :D

Haha....that is what it felt like :) I love Steemit for the different perspectives . You can't have that on Facebook nowadays without someone tearing you a new one.

It's easy to get caught up in your feelings. There have been people here I hated with a burning passion and after approaching them they've become some of my greatest allies. I try to keep an open mind in these situations.

It's a very hard thing to do...not getting caught up in your feelings. It's important that when one gets riled up that they take a step back and gather their thoughts and emotions prior to responding or engaging in further conversation. Keeping an open mind is key.

Well said. I have a saying for what you're talking about at the end of your writing. I say: Scroll instead of Troll. Meaning: If someone sees something that offends them, they can just scroll past the post, or like you said, unfollow the "offensive" person and carry on with life :)

Love that saying....Scroll instead of Troll. I might steal it and put it as a footer at the end of my posts :)

That's a great saying. I have to keep that thought in mind the next time I'm tempted to write a smack-down in response to something really stupid posted online. Scroll instead of Troll.

Yes @florentina :) I have to remind myself daily as well! If I need to rant, I'll do it on my page instead of on the other person's post :)

Having a great community is one of the best thing a site can ask for. And we all hope steemit would be the best site with the best community ever! :)

Your right. I view Steemit as one big Community and that is part of the fun.

I think I saw some of that spat, but I don't know what it was about. We can respect someone without agreeing with them. There are bound to be disputes over issues, but also with things like plagiarism. Who gets to arbitrate these?

Other sites are full of stuff I really don't want to see. If Steemit grows then it's likely to come here too. If Steemit is not censored then it could be a platform for some nasty content. I just hope that we will be able to control what we see. It may need more than a mute button to be usable.

I didn't know either...i was reading then half way through i just asked myself why i was reading this. It doesn't impact me. When it comes to plagiarsm, that is an interesting one. I am not sure how one would arbitrate that.

We need negativity to balance with positivity.

Negativity in and of itself is not bad. However there is no need to belittle, bully or demean others.

Negativity, though, shouldn't mean that someone takes the opposite view of an argument.
We should be able to agree to disagree. So I'll leave you with this:

So true, great article!

Thanks!

Hi @mlialen, just stopping back to let you know that I included you as one of my favourite reads on my ramble today. You can see what I had to say here.

Thanks!!!!

But the dark side has pizza and cookies...Great post man, I totally agree. Drama free is the way to be!

It does?!?! Hmm...I may have to rethink my stance :)
Thanks!
