Lesson Learnt #1 | Story time - The day I lost a friend

in steemit •  8 years ago  (edited)

This morning I woke up after a very strange dream, a dream I have had for nearly a year. I then got up out of my bed, went to my computer and looked at the date. It turns out, today was the 2 year anniversary from when me and my ex-girlfriend broke up, not just any ex girlfriend either, my first grown up relationship.

This in itself isn't interesting but it did remind me of something important I lost.

I once had a friend. We had grown up with each other, went to primary school, secondary school and eventually college before we parted ways and I went off to university.
During my time in university I became much more outgoing, I really came out of my shell and when I returned, this sparked something in my friends head. In the time apart we had become 2 very different types of people. He was working part time hours at a super market feeling miserable, while I was out going different places, making new friends and generally enjoying myself.

One night when me and him were playing a game we ended up having a girl join out skype call. This isn't anything unusual, we quite often invited people to the call that we were playing with online. As we all got chatting I realised how pleasant this girl turned out to be.
Fast forward a couple of weeks, me and her had been messaging back and forth constantly. We had both video called each other several times and we had actually set a date to meet up and for her to stay around my house for a whole week.

Now several days before I was due to go and pick her up I get a message from my friend.

"Hey, you remember that girl from the skype call? I think I'm really starting to like her"

This startled me a little bit, quite frankly it shocked me. I had never known him to admit to being interested in a girl, in fact there had been a long running joke in he group about him being gay. Now I was fine with this, I gathered if he didn't find out there was a thing going on between me and her then there wouldn't be an issue. Neither of us would get hurt. So I kept my mouth shut, I answered vaguely when he asked for advice on how to get her interested in him and tried to subtly slot in the idea that she might not be interested in him.

Then he straight up told her that he was interested....And was straight up shot down.

This is life and unfortunately he didn't take well to being rejected. The moment it happened he took to the group chat to attempt to shame her to all of us. He made a point of called her a slut and generally being an ass.
At this point, I was incredibly pissed off, Not only was he straight up insulting the girl I could potentially be seeing, but he's going on and on about it.
Then something snapped in my head. I went on to my phone and sent him a text.

"Hey ---, just to let you know --- is coming down soon to stay at mine for a week, we're now seeing each other"

I knew this would absolutely destroy him because of how much time he had spent talking about her prior to the rejection. I was an ass and I admit it.

After this message there was radio silence until the next day when I woke up to a voice mail on my phone that had been left at 3am in the morning. It was my friend screaming and saying "LOOK WHAT YOU'VE DONE TO ME".
This was the point that I cut all communication. I blocked his number, blocked all social media related to him and he removed himself from the group chat. None of our friend group saw him for nearly a year.

_I haven't seen or heard for him since then either. _
