It is all not so clear. I am on steemit for about 4 months and yet I still do not understand a lot of it.
But just posting interesting content and connecting to the people with whom you share interests, gives you slowly more insights.

you can also use busy.org to do your postings.
It gives some more flexibility to post.
Steemit, busy, steepshot ( for your phone), esteem ( for your phone) are all tools to do your posting on the very same Steem blochchain.
If you are a good python programmer, you can even create your own tools to post etcetera ( difficult stuff...)

In order to have someone delegate SP to you it is best to go through a service like Minnowbooster.com
I delegate most of my SP this way...
In order to lease SP you would need some steem to pay for the loan. You should check out minnowbooster and get familiar until you get some steem.

https://steem.chat/home is a way to communicate with others, especially followers. As far as I can tell it is private. I have people reach out to me there. Some for advice, some that have been followers and they want to chat privately. I have others let me know about any new post that may have made so I can check out their blog.
Of course there are some who try to manipulate me to give or loan steem power to them.
