Yesterday Dan Larimer resigned as CTO of Steemit. Steemit will go on, but I’ll be honest... today has been a stressful day. Dan has an unusual history, so while we can't say we expected this, it was a possibility we had planned for.
The truth is, Jeffrey Paul (@sneak) has been the driving force behind development for the past 3 months. While this whole affair is emotionally painful, development is actually ahead of schedule thanks to Jeffrey and of course our amazing team of developers. He’s the right person to head development in the interim as we transition into the future.
I won’t lie; there are big changes coming. After processing these events, I believe this is the best thing for Steemit Inc, and most importantly for the community growing here on Steemit.com.

To be honest, as a shareholder of Steem (which is licenced by Steemit Inc.) I expected some kind of explanation why this happen. From my point of view explanation is not given.
what doesn't matter because this code doesn't belong to us. If someone would like to introduce new changes which will be good for whole community but bad for Steemit Inc., that would be impossible to do that legally.
Steem code base has to be fully open-source and have open licence.
Downvoting a post can decrease pending rewards and make it less visible. Common reasons:

That license, which Dan came up with, has been there since day 0. That is as long as any of us have opted into participating. In the long run, I would see the license change, but not now.

That certainly sheds a different light on his (deleted) post about wanting Steem to be open source. It is okay that he changed his mind about it, but to portray Steemit as some sort of enemy of freedom by having a restricted license given that he came up with the license seems misleading at best.

Completely feel you on this and perhaps something can be done to assuage the concern. from my pov I am relying on DPoS, and not on Steemit or me. Witnesses can be anonymous and the system runs whether Steemit tries to be part of it or not... I'm glad we are though.

Not like the PoW projects, actually DPOS is based on trust. We have been trusting from the beginning.
Downvoting a post can decrease pending rewards and make it less visible. Common reasons:
Submit
That's a valid point, but PoW has other problems, which I'm sure you're aware. With Bitcoin, as an example, we now have to trust the large mining firms/guilds not to collude together for their own benefit. We have to trust changes will be implemented that benefit everyone instead of being stalled by the powerful. I remember a point in time where a large mining guild decided to split up (against their own short term interests) because the community was too concerned with the percentage of hashing power they controlled. I was glad they did it, but it reminded me how much trust is still involved in PoW as well, even if it's trust that those involved will remain rational actors for their own long-term self interest. At least with DPOS there's a mechanism for making that trust transparent with a voting process everyone can participate in.

I'm thinking about accepting checks, that would eliminate fees from credit cards and from fiat->btc fees. But we would need to add in enough lead time to make sure the check can't be cancelled (well, we could make exceptions for small amounts and good customers). But we need to add some more code on the backend to support it as well.

I think that the existing license is a protection for Steem holders against the big fish in the social media industry. I think it is a pragmatic protection that could be lifted after a network effect is achieved. I'm guessing that isn't the only reason for your leaving and look forward to gazing upon your future works.

I find this an extraordinary stance @blocktrades contrary to everything that most anyone with any presence of mind here, as far as I can tell, believes in - but I will speak for myself - why would any one (authority) ask any other conscientious person to censor themselves? I do not know the nature of the relationships of key players on this platform, and nor should I necessarily care, but censorship and prevailing upon others points of view do not seem worthy of the ecosystem I am subscribing to. I can only interpret that Cap'n @Dan himself acquiesced and so is complicit - but this feels rotten at the core and those of us interested in building transparent, ownership free community, striving for integrity, are left scratching our heads ...?

will you be rewarding people actually helping you out, because I'm a bit reluctant to release my ideas and spend my time further with this platform. I've given you too much courtesy already :D I really bought the whole aspect come for profits stay for the community, but my "leaders" are mostly off, they couldn't deal with the problems, so why should I spend a week thinking what is best for everybody if there is nobody that will appreciate my efforts, or anybody that will listen to my points :|
If you are interested I've put out my outlining post a week ago, check and see if you are interested. I'm also tired of posting about steemit, I'm very annoyed with the current state of things, so I will be getting back to my previous post if any. It's also high time I stopped spending so much time on the social media :D this was a first for me spending 5 months of daily activity with a platform, so you have a lot to go, but I can see major flaws everywhere and that is stopping me from acting, also I have my own to deal with. So I can't put my money where my mouth is since I have as much banked here as I get by with on a monthly basis :D
Good luck mr would be CTO :) make ned and dan proud :) you have some shoes to fill and some mistakes to miss out on making, since this platform is spiraling down for months, a change is what was necessary, I'm not sure it's for the better, but I can hope so, since you seem to have your own divides, at least they won't bug you for now. I am waiting to see what are the changes that you talk about, @ned, I hope they will help making the Steemit community more diverese and sane in a way (altough not too sane). My son (a very smart young man, and I am totally objective), says that a good social network has to have a big city mentality rather than one of a small village. I hope this is where we are heading.

I am glad you like it, @ned, and if I may add something more, I think what is most lacking in Steemit is the "why" ( I am sure you saw Simon Sinek's TED talk about why "why" should come first).
Why are you doing this, Ned? Why would people want to join? I mean, surely it is not just for the money. As things are now, and will probably remain so, the payments are nice, but they are not enough as a reason. You should find this why and make the whole user experience of Steemit based on this why.

So, I guess the question becomes who among you will stand against the sp delegation?
Who will stand up to the whales in their attempt to stamp their mark on the rest of us?
If that goes through, and the dolphins created are allowed to force the Steemit inc brand onto the interface, I don't see it ending well.
We can get policies shoved down our throats on the wage slave plantation, why would we come here for some more?
Which makes the question, how many duped true beliebers will buy into the illusion of whales being benevolent?
Either way, I am here until the shadow ban becomes visible, an alternative appears, or I get bored.

This is a long journey. There are heroes and trials along the way that will test every one of us. The fundamental tools are in place to move forward and in the end, it is all of us who decide the success of our travels.
Personally, I am in for the long walk, to unforeseen places and new experiences. Glad to be on this journey with others willing to endure the sometimes bumpy roads to get to great destinations.
I appreciate the past, but look more towards the future and what is over the next hill.
Best wishes, much thanks, and respect to all Dan has contributed. Thanks Ned for the insights and leading us forward on the path. Jeffrey, we look forward to your work in making that path ahead take us to incredible places.

Periods of change can be painful and scary, but ultimately change is necessary for progress to be made. Otherwise you risk stagnation and simply maintain the status quo (Bitcoin I'm looking at you). I'm sad to see Dan go, but have faith in you guys and feel reassured that the Dev team seems to be in good hands. I for one am not going anywhere and will probably be buying more Steem soon. Keep up the good work and I look forward to seeing the 2017 roadmap get implemented piece by piece!

The criticisms in my posts yesterday were not intended to diminish you @ned or @sneak in the work you are doing on Steemit.com and the Steem blockchain. The progress being made is great.
I do feel that the current license seriously undermines the ideological basis of Steem, and new projects need an ideological basis because innovators and early adopters are motivated by their beliefs. Changing to a standard licence would also have pragmatic benefits as @smooth has argued in his posts. Investors and businesses will find getting involved in Steem easier and more desirable if it has a standard open source licence which is well understood. And finally I think the licence does put a real dark cloud over the decision making process for witnesses, where it is not just their elected position they have to be concerned about but the possibility that they could be breaking the law or facing a lawsuit (whether they would win it or not, nobody wants to deal with a lawsuit from a larger company) by running a fork not approved of by Steemit Inc.
I recognize that it was @dan who put the licence there in the first place, and he could even have bad motives for bringing attention to it now. Yet it is something that we should have addressed month ago, in truth.

SMT Oracles could potentially be used to develop a peer-reviewed fact checker of sorts to rival that of Google's.
Fact checker is probably not the best title to be fair. But, it could be an excellent way to determine what the leading public opinions on controversial/prudent matters may be at any given moment.
This same technology could also be used in a number of other ways. Take for example; to discover the most successful means of recovery across a database of depressed/suicidal people or those with mental/physical health conditions. The possibilities are endless.
Anyway, I would like to see something like this- something useful being constructed using the technology. I have many more ideas beyond this one if you would like to talk. Including one that I believe to be exceptional but that I am reluctant to disclose on-chain.

Good luck @ned. I have no doubt you and the rest of the team are very talented people and developers, but sorry for I must say this so straight: you and the others decision-makers have poor business and economical skills. That's the only explanation I have for you letting this straight downfall of market value happen . You might have other idea about this but sad fact is that best bloggers are leaving the ship and rather not much mentioning about the best investors. They already calculated their losses and moved elsewhere long time ago. Sad thing is that many people are referring this for many months and offering good solutions, but no-one from your team obviously listens. I'm not saying it still cannot be reversed but it will be much more expensive now and will be much more slower process than before half year or so. It's pity because it will take a lot to regain trust. It might be probably easier to start from scratch, who knows, this time without fundamental mistakes - like missing good business (or at least sustainability) model.

@ned, thanks for the update-- communication is super important in community building, otherwise the rumor mill ends up creating its own conclusions and running the show.
I've only been part of Steemit for six weeks, so I'm not hip to all the history and underlying dynamics... but reading between the lines it seems that perhaps Dan is a creative visionary genius. And there's often a price with that... which is that creative geniuses live to CREATE but they are seldom long term players who care about the nuts-and-bolts of bringing their creations to broader markets and dealing with the day-to-day runnings. They tend to move on to the next great creation. That's nobody's "fault;" it's a fundamental dynamic we can see in thousands of startups.
Bottom line, whereas Steemit may be unique, and blockchain based and decentralized and a myriad other things... NONE of us are exempt from the fundamentals of human nature.
Seems to me this is an exceptional concept with lots of potential for further development FAR beyond social blogging... and I'm hopeful you and @sneak and the devs (I'm purely an old content creator!) will move the platform towards its full potential!
Just remember to communicate with the community!

Is it really a good deal? With the downvoting going on, whales won't be able to earn from curating, so why should an investor buy if some spiteful person is going to downvote his curation awards away?
Downvoting a post can decrease pending rewards and make it less visible. Common reasons:

Whales can still earn and speculate: buy low and sell high as @jacobts say.
If earning from curating is no more feasible I think it's good for Steemit as a social blogging platform.
Curation (before experiment) makes bots and whale earning, but it destroys the meaning of upvoting. IMO upvote should mean "I red and I like it", not "I automatically vote based on patterns / rules" or "I think more people and bots will vote this". This way of curating kills the social side of Steem(it).

Good point. It is . Respect. Pero mi opinion is one of balance. I am not looking at this strictly as an investor, a speculator, or more importantly as a customer. I agree right now things are not perfect, it is the wild wild west of a one a year old baby start up. THIS is the most exciting time to get in. Investing 101 is buy low sell high, so now it is low. A new user doesn't want to get in on Facebook when it is the norm, no, they wan the edgy uncertain Snapchat. And a speculator does not choose the steady Amazon Stock rocket to scalp, but looks for volatility. It is the uncertainty below these waters that makes this ocean of opportunity appealing. If one wants peace of mind, yes, there are safer yards. But if one is looking for raw potential then Steem offers many a rewarded outlet of expression. Even with "flags" (which i believe will die out as a feature) one is still rewarded more than a tweet or a facebook post or a snapchat. Tis just my $.02. Dan participated in this creation, for that I am thankful. Now if we can just get our friend's phone numbers approved, then little by little there will be more users. Then little by little the investors will see what comes of this potential. WE, you and me and all those with accounts, have an opportunity to work a little better together. WE can communicate with @Ned and the gang a little better. WE will see what happens next. Stay in touch Rose! Be well.

I agree that its not productive to call anyone useless. But 'not in any ned's fault' is absurd. He's at the helm of INC, and good bad or in between, ultimate responsibility is with him for INCs decisions. And INC's decisions have played a large role in the price of steem.
Im sure if steem was on the rise you would be giving him at least partial credit. It seems to me that if thats the case, it only makes sense to assign some responsibility to him when things arent going well.

I always felt Ned was more of a figure head like the queen of england and most of the executive or technical decisions would have been coming from the guys actually coding the damn thing.. I may be wrong though. Often am.
I guess it may come off as me downplaying his role in all of this.. I very well may be. But my train of thought on the matter is the price is more likely caused by people powering down and exiting the network rather than Ned pulling strings and dumping prices.
