I recommend people to calm down. Just because an issue is happening doesn't mean you can easily figure out what it is or even how to fix it once you know.

Fixes can also negatively affect others parts and it takes testing to effectively fix something.

If you really can't handle it, try utilizing busy.org or eSteem during this time. I am quite positive they are not sitting there being lazy as their platform has issues. Getting angry will not make them work faster.

A fix will come. At least the platform is still able to give you info and work, albeat slowly. It could not work at all.

Hello steemit!

I have been waiting for a statement for quite a while and so have been other users. Being silent and not communicating to us is just leading to more frustration and will not help the situation, on the contrary, it is making it even worse. I am sorry to say but to come out with the statement such as above is just lame without addressing what is the problem, what is causing it and what the solutions are. I do not think it is too much to ask for and would definitely smooth out the situation if we know that we are being listened to and backed by the team that we believe in. My frustration with the whole issue is just leading to the disappointment right now. I was expecting to hear more.

Other then that, we love steemit and we love all the new ideas that are coming in the form of SMTs and others that are currently being worked on.

From his post, it does not seem that they know what the issue is. It is hard to give an update when they do not know what is causing the connection issues.

Look at it from their side. It must be extremely frustrating to work around the clock and NOT know what is causing the errors. And then, to not have the ability to answer the questions from the community, just adds more stress to them already not knowing what is going on.

The problem is that most people will be trying to use the steemit site as they don't understand, or don't trust, other sites like busy. I realise steemit is still a beta and we don't expect it to be perfect, but it's been mostly worrying before. Ned doesn't really acknowledge that there is a problem, but we are seeing it all the time. I hope things improve soon.

It's a good site, with some limitations and extra features. I have been using it recently. I see there's also SteemStage that appears to be a clone of the main site, but possibly without the current issues. I've not logged into that one yet. I don't like that it doesn't admit to being a different site.

I'm just here to say that @ned didn't say there isn't a problem... this post only says that the problem isn't DDoS and "Steemit is working actively on performance".... There IS a problem... but they ARE working on solving it now.

At least that's how I understood the post...

Ned doesn't really acknowledge that there is a problem, but we are seeing it all the time. I hope things improve soon.

Update: Steemit is working actively on performance, always. Any root issues are being diagnosed and solved for.

Is that not an acknowledgement of an issue that they are trying to work on? What that says to me is they haven't found the the root issue that is causing the problems you are seeing. BUT, they are working on trying to figure out the issue so that it can be fixed. I think the last thing they want is people to actually move over to busy.org or eSteem. They definitely want to retain all of their users.

If people don't trust it, they just need to do research into it. Complaining will do NOTHING. Spend the time that Steemit is having issues to understand how Steem actually works. Understanding that Steemit it not Steem..... And that it is just a intermediary to help you talk with the blockchain.

Ned, c'mon! You have to realize that this is not a satisfactory update. What is happening, and when can we expect it to get better?

The site was working much better than this up until about two weeks ago, at which point we were told a DDoS was happening. The story doesn't make sense. All we want is communication, we know it's hard.

There definitely was a DDoS two weeks ago. It was very aggressive and was mitigated.

There are many things to consider for steemit that make mainstream DDoS solutions non-starters, but we've been able so far to work with our own solutions and are considering additional mechanisms to prevent future attacks.

I'm not quite sure what steemitstage clone is.. like busy.org ? glad you're smiling.. I've been through a lot too. I've had a viral infection of the immune cells in my blood for about a year and can't really do much else other than steemit cos of chronic fatigue.

I am getting better, slowly. I can only eat about 15 foods off a strict list (no sugars or starch, so that's fruit, bread, pasta, rice, beans and potatoes. no biscuits, juice. ( I can have a cup of black coffee once a day.)

I've got 2 small babies, so I'm still smiling too. They are amazing (the girls) and life is always worth striving for. ask for nothing, give everything you've got. you find new avenues where you least expect them!

today I got offered a sync licensing partnership deal for my music catalogue.. things are looking up. @outerground is also an electronic music producer with 2 published albums

I'm by no means surprised that most mainstream solution were non-starters for the website as it needs to function quite differently. To me it's also quite understandable that building a custom solution to prevent or mitigate such attacks would take more time than just implementing Cloudflare (which was surprisingly a suggestion I saw on multiple occasions).

On one hand, not being able to use steemit.com reliably for some time was quite frustrating, but the fact that it took some time to get it back to normal with the infrastructure upgrades I'm sure were made was not surprising by any means and I think a lot of steemians showed a bit of undue impatience.

I really hope all issues are behind us :)

Some dolphin's are losing their patience. I'm just a minnow relating to you what some on my following list are saying. "Done powering down", etc..I try telling them to wait, but there are no real formal responses. It seems we are on a need to know basis, which might not be the best approach.

Obviously you will lose those who don't fully appreciate what "long haul" or long term mean. They want instant profit etc..

With that being said I would urge you to have a little more engagement. I'm sure you are way wealthier and smarter than me.. but sometimes being on a need - to - know basis generates more frustration.

I get it; something behind the scenes "might" be going on, and we might not necessarily need to know because it could cause more of an exodus.

It might be very possible that more attacks are coming, and personally I think there's a good reason for that. It may not even all be with bad intentions, it could perhaps be necessary in order for Steem to really increase in value. If Steemit is preparing for this, seems to me their priorities are set in a very smart way.

@ned can you let us know how often your team uses the production steemit.com site each day, as in are you all eating your own dog food? When I see so few posts and comments from steemit, inc team members, I have to wonder how they can fully understand how frustrating the site has been to use these past 2+ weeks. The lack of communication from you, @steemitblog, and @steemitdev is concerning because it sends the message communication about site issues is not a priority. There's no status page explaining previous outages, and no custom error page when there is an issue to let users know you're aware of it and doing something about it.

Many in the community are frustrated (as you can see from the 150+ comments on the dog food post I linked to above). They want to be heard and have their frustrations validated along with clear communication of what the specific problems are and how they are being addressed.

Also, would it be possible for you to elaborate on this comment:

I've tried to get a more detailed explanation from @sneak but the answers didn't make sense to me. You're already using AWS so it would seem they already have your private keys. Why not go with Cloudfront (within AWS) and have them deal with DDoS for you for around $3k a month?

I look forward to meeting you and the team in Lisbon soon so we can talk about this more in detail.

This is my Steemit experience in 10 minutes of usage:
TypeError: e is null = when i upvote post
Transaction failed = when i upvote post
Transaction broadcast error = when i post comment
TypeError: Network request failed = when i post comment
Duplicate transaction check failed = when i post coment
You have already voted in a similar way = when i upvote
I am pissed off right now.

Hey Ned, first of all thanks for the update. It would have been better with the detail explanation about the root cause. I am pretty sure the 30 software engineers in your team are great to resolve the problem, but don't forget there are also really knowledgable and talented software experts around Steemit, and you could get great help from all of them. What you and your team think cannot be always 100% correct when it comes to software architecture and security. Please be open, get the free help from the gurus who are willing to help you to resolve the problem and enhance the architecture just because they love Steemit.

There are a lot of very clever technical people on this platform and I'm sure there are also people who could help communicate to users, test systems, report bugs and support issues for the good of the platform and at no cost if only they were "in the loop" with the core steemit team a bit more.

Current issues I am experiencing on an ongoing basis for weeks now:

Posts complete and then go missing. Sometimes I have to repost 2-4 times for it to appear in my blog.

Upvotes go missing after completing.

Comments go missing after completing.

Reward balance redemption is selected and then just hangs or gives a WS connection error. Page refresh is required.

Transfers hang, timout or do not complete and have to be repeated.

If there is no DDOS, what is the actual issue at the present time?

I love Steemit, but I am spending a lot of hours waiting and waiting like watching Windows 95 install from floppy disk!

So when can we expect the steemit .com site to be running properly like it used to before two weeks ago !? We work hard on our posts to have them just Disappear plus comment s/ upvotes/ resteems are taking forever or not working at all , both my sons have since left steemit hopefully they will come back but they were realitivly new to the platform and this didn't help at all . Good luck @ned . Hope you guys resolve the problems soon !

That is great to hear finally because performance on Steemit.com has sucked for weeks now. I don't believe in having to access the blockchain via a different website either, that inconvenience is no way to market and grow a website worldwide. Obviously there is no DDoS currently but that is all you have to say. No actual update. This is a load of crap. Thank you for letting us know that you and the steemit team are at least aware of the problem. I think that is what has most people frustrated, not knowing if anyone at the top or in a position to rectify the issues were even aware of the problems.

I have read through all the comments that were posted prior to responding myself. It seems that people are split 50/50 when it comes to if your response was adequate, I myself think it was, there are problems, you acknowledged that, and let people know that the issues are being worked on. Good enough post for me.

Hi @ned. On friday, a group of us went to the London Investor Show to speak about Steemit as an investment platform. We were hoping to livestream and/or at least post live about being at the show, but we literally couldnt login. Although we covered it, we were at risk because of the network issues. I think it would be great if we could just perhaps get a little more info about what's been going on (if you know), and is there anything we can do in the community to support you and the witnesses? Thanks

Cheers Dan.... honestly it is quite frustrating posting, reading and up-voting posts as the servers are so slow that it is hard to have any of the mentioned actions without clicking and refreshing more than once.
I am sure the steemit team will sort out this issue and in the mean time I thank you for letting us know.

Short note but still better than nothing mate!
I just hope everything is fixed and runs back smooth as this issue just send bad signals for steemit in general.
If we want mass adoption, everything needs to be perfect mate.
I noticed that since the announcement of SMTs we are getting more and more issues!
Is steemit ready to welcome millions of users on board!? For now it's a big NO!

There is a good alternative for Steemit.com.... developed by @skenan for the Chinese using Steemians. It's basically a clone site of Steemit with interfaces translated into Chinese
https://www.cnsteem.com
I trust him and am using it to post this comment right now (by using my Posting key only). It's easy to figure out even you don't understand the language as it is identical.
Use it at your own risk though. Many are using it among CNers. Just FYI.

@ned thank you for solving the multiple DDoS. Besides performance issues, has there been any other issues faced by the community that your team is actively solving?

I realized that there is absolutely no way for me to get in touch with the admins, whenever I need help in areas I do not understand or perhaps having issues with Steemit that I do not how to solve. Is there a feedback infrastructure in place within Steemit that allows users to provide feedback? Or perhaps even a 'Report A Problem' function in the menu?? Or does the team assume that it is not necessary for Steemians to inform of the admins of the possible issues that we are facing?

I lost my post 4 times today but I just had to wait & post it later. If I am writing a post I always without chance , copy and paste what I hve written and then post. If there is a problem with the site then I know I havent lost what I spent time writing. There have been problems last 2 weeks but hey... WE R STILL HERE which must be a great thing

I commend you all for taking on proactive risk analysis to prevent future issues before they arise. On a positive note, many users including myself have become more savvy using the various other sites and tools available to us during this downtime.

A downfall of a great platform is when devs doesn't communicate to their community.

Albeit, Youtube doesn't, yet, it's still the second largest search engine. I think steemit will still be the choice of many.

Well, it is indeed annoying to wait many seconds just to start to load a post, or wait many seconds for an upvote or even failing to upvote, or long wait or stuck posting, making navigation considerably slower.
