There’s some hard lessons to learn in this game. And reasons why it’s always been said upfront to save & backup private keys.
Easy mistakes to make, though. My wife started an account early on and ended up losing access because I saved her public rather than private keys.

Its completely unprofessional what they did overnight.... without any prior notice - and we keep getting these messages - we are speaking to communities. Yeah right!
The other thing that might just save you is scraping your password - from password manager in your browser (if you saved it for entering the site - hope you did) :)

Since you are logged into steemit, you are using either posting or master key.
I guess you are using the master - so nothing is lost.
Best thing is not to panick and read up on how keys and permissions work on steem.
With your master key, you can get to all the other keys.
That is why you should best use it only for that.
With the separate steemit.wallet, it seems, you can not log in with your master key.
Other steem wallets can do that, though.
You could use a trusted 2nd party app ...

Yeah, while it isn't a best practice it is exactly the way normal people use the internet every where.
Also for all you tech wizards that like to point at these things as being dumb.
Most of the people who are the hardest hit by sudden changes they don't understand are the mainstream users we pretend we are going to appeal to.
