Art - Olumo Rock

In our visit to Olumo Rock on a couples retreat, one of the tour guide in charge of the Art gallery gave us an exciting experience. He talked about the Art as if he made them all. Going through some of the pictures from the trip i came across this one taking by Jenuel Photography- the official photographer of the tour. The guide called the Art, "kekeelemu" and translated it as 'The drink of the gods!'

keke elemu - The drinks of the gods

The piece clearly shows a palm wine tapper/seller. He goes around on his 'keke' to distribute the drinks of the gods-Palmwine. Why is it called the drinks of the gods? I wonder

Palm wine is the sweet tasty sap gotten from wounded palm trees. If you grew in Nigeria, and other part of central Africa, you will know this. This drink is good for your health, if only you drink the pure palm wine. Most sellers mix their palmwine with saccharin which makes it sweeter BUT unhealthy.

Its sweetness and freshness can stay about 24 hours but after that, it becomes sharp and sour and contains more alcohol than many alcoholic drinks. This is a result of the fermentation is undergoes.
Because it is good for the human health, the benefits of palmwine are said to include
- Improves eyesight
- Reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases
- Helps fight against cancer
- Helps in maintaining a healthy hair, skin and nails
- Promotes lactation in breastfeeding mothers
I just feel like getting myself a cold fresh palm wine now...lolz

Caution
Fermented palm wine in excess is detrimental to your health.
