As a marketing guy, I am thinking all day and night about what can be done with the things that surround me. And well... Steemit has become a part of my sourroundings lately. About a month ago, I published an idea, mostly unnoticed how to bring advertising into steemit without violating the voluntary principles of the chain. Unfortunately there was not yet a real interest in that matter. I still believe this to be one of the best possibilities how to do it (only thing is, that this should be done by the devs, or a bounty for gaining advertisers should be installed). It seems there is a new discussion about these matters going on these days, as I found on the blog of @mrosenquist.
I thought about my old idea, and thought about what could be done to avoid advertising, too. So here is my new idea, how to make our beloved Steem work for the future without advertising at all.
Shortly explained how the system works at the moment (or doesn´t work as some may think):
- there is content (which has a value)
- there are investors (who bring value)
- there is the blockchain that "generates" through investment + content three different kinds of "currency":
- Steemdollars (which can be traded and gives interest)
- Steem (which can be traded and gives no interest)
- Steempower (which can´t be traded and is blocked in the system for a certain time)
This is only a rough sketch... but I guess that´s about it.
I think in the meantime anybody registered is aware of the problem, that we have with the price of Steem. The problem about the price is, that authors, devs and whitnesses pay out their money (what is ok and earned of course). But this means from an amateur mathematical view... the price will drop as long as there are more payouts than investments. As already discussed advertising could be a possibility to balance this issue. Done in the right way, that could be a good thing. Done in the wrong way this would be the death of steem.
Another way could be the installation of something, that I´ll call "Readers-Only-Wallet".
What´s that?
I think that there already are and later will be, a ton of people reading content, that they find useful on SteemIt. Most of these people will probably not register, probably never bring steem into the system and thus be "dead capital". These readers don´t vote, those readers have no impact for the authors, those readers won´t be rewarded (Curation) and those readers probably won´t come back.
I am not a friend of "paywalls", a system to force people into paying for content they want to read. But there are quite some successful Media out there, using this system really successfully... daily pass, weekly pass, monthly pass etc. I don´t think this would be a good way for SteemIt. A much better way would be the voluntary payment. I can only speak for myself... but if I find valuable content and there is a donate button or something like that, then I often pay what the article is worth (There is also the patreon site, wich is a great role model)
How could this Wallet work:
A reader comes to SteemIt, reads valuable content. At this moment there is a message "authors will be payed by upvotes ...please register". Exactly here should also be a possibility to "donate" without the crypto-login, which is for many people a big issue. Instead an easy registration should be possible with an "outside of the system wallet". You should be able to pay any amount via BTC, paypal, giropay and all the other ways. The amount in your wallet will give you the possibility to "pay" authors directly. So if you think an article is worth 2 Cent... send 2 Cents. If you think the article is worth 2 $... send 2 dollars.
The benefits:
- payouts will be balanced by investments without interest
- authors can be payed for their quality and how much it is worth for a reader individually
- after payment into the system, a big chunk of the RL-money (real life money) is as Steempower blocked in the system.
- this kind of investment goes directly to high quality authors and will much faster balance the whale/minnows issue
- less frustration of having no impact with a vote
The negatives:
- I found none, but the process of developing and applying it to the system
- ??? (tell me some if you have some)
Thank you for reading, I hope this can inspire some of the devs and lead to an active discussion!

Hey... I see it more as teething troubles. There are not many dying of that, even if it looks sometimes very cruel or very serious. There is very much to do, but there are solutions. I guess it´s again the lack of communication.
BTW: I would appreciate if you would write your comments with your main account, so that your critical voice would have more weight and could be heard better...
