I think you're absolutely right about the quality of comments on steemit. I am new to steemit but am used to the sorts of high quality discussions you see in niche internet communities where people with real knowledge share their experiences. But on steemit it's all about the money and the followers and "playing the game". I was shocked at how hollow the comments are on steemit with everyone being all nice and friendly without engaging in real dialectic for fear of losing money and followers.

I don't think it's for fear of losing money or followers, as @lexiconical's great post on the topic says I think you can actually gain followers by adding good comments. I just think it's not worth people's time since comments are undervalued. "Playing the game" is fine I think, we just need to set up the system so the game encourages the desired outcome. SteemIt is doing pretty well compared to other systems but I think we can do better and the trending page is where I would start.
Hopefully the release of SMTs will usher in a number of high quality niche communities which also have the benefit of the Steem platform behind them.
