Just because you use Steem Follower to exchange upvotes doesn't mean you can't also choose posts that will help maximize your curation rewards. If you're like me and haven't hit that 500 steem power mark yet to get your magical slider, you've only got 10 votes a day to spend(I've only got 9 because I already know I'm upvoting the @qurator daily newsletter ) and so you've got to make them count.
For me I'm a photographer and writer so I try and find posts I like in those two categories first to upvote then I spend any votes left on general Steemit articles( like this one) that are helpful to the entire community. What I'm going to show you today is how to exam posts you're considering upvoting and pick the one that will give you a better curation reward. I'm going to assume your a minnow with a 0.02 upvote, you may need to adjust your thinking accordingly if you have more vote power. Here's the first post we are going to consider.
It's a fun little picture but from a curation standpoint it's got some problems. As you can see it's already been upvoted for $4.209SBD and the author only has $0.1075 left in steem follower points. This means there have already been a lot of upvotes and there aren't a lot more guaranteed. There could be more. The author could come back to Steem follower and upvote more posts. It could get a random whale upvote on steemit. Who knows, but as it stands right now if you upvoted it it's likely not to give you a curation reward. Now let's have a look at a more favorable post we could upvote on Steem Follower.
Now as you can see this post has been up for a lot less time than the first one and has been upvote for only a little over two pennies while still having 14 cents left in rewards points. Even though the total amount this post will receive in upvote rewards is less if you upvote it right now your curation reward will be higher than the first post. The reason is that you are closer to being the first upvoter, you are closer to voting at the 30 minute mark and more of a % of the reward pool will have been created after you voted.
So remember, just because you are using Steem follower to trade votes doesn't mean you have to just mindlessly upvote anything to get the votes you want in return. Upvote stuff in the same tags you post in, help build your community. Also, keep an eye toward getting better curation rewards so you can increase your Steem Power. This will help you get more out of Steem Follower, which will help you build the community. IOW, it will become a positive feed back loop that will help everyone grow.
What's that you say? You aren't using Steem Follower yet? Well here's the link go check it out.

Now excuse me I need to go shoot some bracketed shots. I just downloaded the trial version of Aurora HDR and want to try the bugger out.

Thanks for the walk through!
This was really helpful actually. I was trying to get my head around the author point and how they worked.
