I'm sure some of you are looking for the weekly edition of "Upvote Bot's This Week". I've decided to discontinue that weekly post in favor of a semi regular, when I think I need to,Steemit oriented blog called "The Leaky Faucet". No I'm not having a seizure(yes I do have those from time to time), a faucet is a upvote for your posts that happens more or less automatically that you don't have to pay for. While I may indeed discuss faucets in The leaky Faucets It won't be just about leaky faucets.
Over the last week I've been giving some thought to what I want out of Steemit and how best we can promote Steemit to non-Steemians. I've come to the conclusion that we've placed too much focus on "Show me the money" and not enough on other steemit strengths. The reason I've come to this conclusion is that it's hard to get traction at first when it comes to earnings but the other strengths can be much more appearent. Here's three ideas I think we should be promoting.
The Clutter Free Interface
Steemit has one of the cleanest Interface's of any social media site. For written content there is nothing better than a white background with black text. I think a lot of sites have gotten overly complex in there layout in an effort to appear sophisticated. I rather have easy to read and enjoy.
Lack of Censorship
As sites like Facebook and Youtube hand more and more control over to advertisers it becomes harder to post on those sites without running afoul of the nanny bots. I've gotten facebook timeouts and demonetized on youtube. My stuff is hardly controversial. Even though it's still there on youtube when you are demonetized it might as well not be because of the way their search works.
Here on Steemit. Everyone gets their turn on new and if you get enough upvotes you get to have a turn on trending and hot too. You can post whatever you want and it will always be there on the blockchain unless you delete it. The community may downvote it because you've plagiarized but it'll still be there.
The Community
There is a nucleus of a great community that has formed over the last year at Steemit. There are some fantastic groups that have come together to offer assistance to new users. One of those groups being @minnowsupport. As I tell new users. They should join their discord channel for the upvotes and stay for all the chat rooms and support.
REWARD YOUR FRIENDLY NEIGHBORHOOD UPVOTERS
So when I first came to the conclusion that I wanted to started concentrating on community building I was going to swear off upvote bots completely. Not for any super moral reason. Just I think it develops the mind set of as soon as I got the post up it was now time to go chase that dollar rather then go read other posts and comment. So what I started doing was plowing my SBD's into steem and steem into Steem Power.
I was all set to change my payouts to 100% Steem Power when I read a post by another Steemian. I wish I remembered her username because I'd give her credit. I'm going to adopt what she does and leave my payouts at 50/50 and whenever I have enough SBD's I'm going to drop a minnow booster on a 5ish day old post with an eye toward rewarding as many of my consistent upvoters. Here's a hint. If you see that it's upvote by both @qurator and @minnowsupport there's a better than average chance that if a post gets minnow boosted that day it'll be that one. This will give my supporters a nice curation reward every few days and encourage their continued support. It will also help grow the Steem Power of faucets that keep dripping steem into my account.
The Leaky Faucet will return when it fills up the post bucket.
