It's one of those cheesy lessons you are taught growing up by well meaning adults who understand life far better than you, and don't want you making the same mistakes they did.
Be who you are, not what you think others want you to be.
What makes decentralized systems so appealing is variety and integration. When we are so focused on what we think other people are going to like we end up creating a conformist system that is stale and bland.
I'm not saying Steemit is stale and bland, its new.
I'm just worried it will end up that way.
Almost everyone can get on Reddit and Facebook and find something that appeals to them. If the only thing that is appealing about Steemit is the fact that you could make some money, you are steeming wrong.
If you....
- Write content about things you don't care about because you think it will be popular
- Only upvote things because you think other people might upvote it
- Lurk in the new posts feed waiting for posts from popular authors to cash in on their popularity
- Follow everyone who hits it big, just because they hit it big
- Hoard your upvotes for only the posts you think might be approved by others
- Hoard your upvotes until a whale votes
- Vote a lot just based on the title
- Skim over every post you open, decide to give your vote or not, then dip out
..........You are steeming wrong.
If you......
- Write about things you are passionate about
- Upvote things that ACTUALLY interest you
- Read the full post, and find out if YOU like it.
- Spend time in sections related to topics you are interested in
- Following people who post things you like
..... You are steeming right
The sooner we all stop worrying about making money on things we don't care about, the sooner we can start making money participating in niches we actually enjoy.
Earlier this week I posted on a really obscure topic, Permaculture. And made a good chunk of change, not at all expecting too.
Today I posted about another obscure topic, but one that I thought was really interesting, CyberTracker. I made nothing
I'm going to continue posting about both simply because I enjoy writing about them. And if the money comes it comes, and if not... This isn't my full time job, and money is not why i'm here.
Give your niche the attention it deserves
steemright don't steemwrong
Own yourself
Then I am Steeming right. :)

Yesterday I wrote this too my friend here on Steemit:
"You can give the people what they think they need, or you can give some people what they love. I prefer the latter."
