Will It Be A Sad Yet Bittersweet Day When Steemit Becomes Mainstream?

Ever since I discovered Steemit I started feeling a new sense of daily excitement!  I'm sure a lot of you know what I mean.  Before I became a Steemian I used Facebook on a daily basis, I admit it's nice to connect with family members who are overseas or in a different state and to connect with old friends.  The problem is that it's over-saturated with way too many gimmicks, ads, and posts that I could careless for.  By that I mean people have totally lost their filters and feel they can disrespect whoever, whenever they want.  It has become a joke not only do they invade your privacy by collecting your data and selling it, they monitor what you view in a stalkerish manner and then try to sell you something that you were browsing 30 minutes earlier!  FB has also recently been busted for promoting scam ads by posting what they think is trending 'fake news'.  One of the most important differences for me is censorship; Facebook, Twitter and Youtube censors you, look at the entire fiasco that just happened with youtube and its advertisers, big YouTubers lost a lot of revenue and some even had content that was political or not up to their standards demonetized or removed.  This is an abuse of power from all of these giant companies, not platforms where you can speak your mind without someone monitoring and censoring what you post or upload.  We should never tolerate bullying, harassment, hate speech or threatening violence, etc.  Bans on these types of topics/censorships are a no brainer!

Steemit has so much more to offer than Facebook and Twitter.  A few Pros over Facebook and Twitter are that Steemit rewards you for your content, instead Facebook uses you to make money through their ads.  Another great benefit is Steemit sits on top of a decentralized open source blockchain, the Benefits to this idea are endless as you will read below.

When it comes to Steemit vs. Instagram it's pretty clear the pros are your getting paid from upvotes and you don't need any sponsors like Instagram has in their model.  Twitter has made it too easy to trash and bash others, they lack the community aspect Steemit has.  Besides, who wants to be on a site that sells your tweets to data miners which means they are spying on you and profiting at the same time.  Basically, the same model Facebook implements to use its members to make money off of them.  Facebook and Twitter are giants on the social media stage and with all that data being mined I'm sure some of it is going to those three letter agencies!

Let's talk more about steemit now!  Steemit has the feeling of a small self-sufficient community that can sustain itself. The plus's of being on an open source blockchain are others can contribute and develop useful applications for steemit and they already have with side applications that are helping steemit grow.  Steemit also helps people with certain skill sets find work and get paid in steem or steem dollars in the steemgigs section.  The possibilities are endless.

One of the first questions I ask myself when I see a Great new idea is what inspired that person/persons to think of that.   What was that 'aha' moment for them and I wonder how they feel about the success of their idea.  Then I think darn I wish I would have thought of that myself.

The bittersweet part comes into all of this because right now whether you are an author, curator, programmer, a witness or all of the above, we are all making connections with other like-minded people and are helping build a community.  My husbad was telling me it reminded him of the early days of the internet when BBS (bulletin board systems) were in motion and anyone with a telephone jack and a modem could just dial in and start a chat with other callers in your area.  These services had a big role on how the internet was shaped back in the 80's and 90's it was a magical time when dialing into a BBS with all these weird names and wondering what you were supposed to do next felt like you were involved in something new, special and ahead of its time.  Maybe it was the intimacy and mystery of having the direct computer-to-computer chat exchanges with strangers who shared the same hobby as you that gave it that magical feeling which is now so trivial!  He told me dialing in felt like you were being teleported into a new universe that had an elementary feeling, like a feeling it was bigger than it actually was. Even the noise of the 2400 bps modem his father had bought him gave him a sense of excitement.  Then the big internet companies came along like Prodigy and AOL, and it felt like pandemonium because the intimacy was lost.  The way he feels about bulltetin board systems is the way I feel about Steemit.

Thus what I'm trying to express here is that when Steemit grows in popularity and becomes more widespread than Facebook, that personal connection will surely be missed by me.  Some will continue their journey here, while others will probably cash out, leaving all the new members to enjoy the fruits of the labor of today's Steemians that helped build this wonderful platform.  It's an exciting feeling knowing that one-day steemit will be flourishing, thriving and more promising than any other social media site out there.  My only question to you fellow Steemians is how will you feel about it?  For me, it will be a happy yet bittersweet day!

BBS are still still around, even on Steem. Just look at ChainBB :)

Hi @numpypython, That's what makes steemit such a great place, all the room to keep developing new projects? The BBS boards were a comparison to the way it feels now to me, as to the way my husband explained BBS boards to me when he was a kid. New and exciting, I see big things ahead for steemit and I think being here now is a great time. :)

Steemit will be just fine when it finds its killer rabid audience. I remember @craig-grant saying Steemit doesn't need to be massive to be successful. In a way he's right. We ain't never gonna have 3.1 billion users like fb. I'd be happy with just 1-5 million users TBH ;) It's nice to be the little wildflower by the roadside sometimes :)

A well written article from the heart of a new Steemian who sees the defects of Facebook and Twitter from a distance. I look forward to more of your writings @road2wisdom. It's nice to see your breaking away from your health article niche from time to time ;) 10/10! Steem on!!

Thanks @mindhunter you are very inspirational to a lot of people here, I appreciate your feedback. :)))

You just hit 1000 posts too! CONGRATULATIONS! I remember my first 1K posts many moons ago! Steem on to the 10K next :) Hee-hee! <3

Thanks check your chat please

On my way noo :)

Heads up to this Post! I agree, censoring anything on Social Media is completely wrong of Corporations Giants!

Thank you @steemitguide I agree 110% with you.

Very insightful post. I hadn't thought much about this. You are correct, it will be different. I will stick around, and most likely have a community group I'm more involved in. As well as the whole Steem it community.
Very interesting post, thank you!! Following you!!

Thank you. I was already following you :))

I started following you, you have really good posts. I also enjoy looking at this cute face.

HAHA, You made me laugh out loud for real in a good way, well thank you I'm glad you like my posts and my face! Followed you back :)

We will be mainstream, but we will evolve and always be better than facewas :)

You are appreciated.

Yes I agree we will always remain better. Thanks @clevercreator

Very well said. Although I think with the coming communities there will always be a way for it to have that "small town feeling" that you are referencing. :)

Hi @voiceofreason I guess we will just have to wait and see what happens but I agree with you. :)

I agree, it will be bitter sweet but let's hope when switching platforms mindsets might follow. Nice post. Upvoted and followed

Thank you :) Following you too.

Thanks @road2wisdom - have a great week!

Thanks for your thoughts @road2wisdom. I feel like the connections I've made here have been generally positive. Although I've only been here a few days, I've noticed that I have much better connections when I spread positivity and don't sweat those negative people all that much. Hopefully Steemit brings out the best of all the new users, it should stay a positive place.

Thanks for input, I agree with you. Staying positive is one of the keys to steemit.

I have really high hopes steemit will catch on more than can be imagined, $10 a day is just enough to starve slowly on for most here right now, But you take Indonesia, China or hundreds of other places, where that is a lot of money daily word is going to spread fast, plus a huge boost for the crypto world is sure to follow that. Here in Panama $15 - $30 a Day is what most make, and I'm trying to spread the word with my limited Spanish, and life is even cheaper in other Latin America country's, most have internet or Iphones....Boom
My 2 cents worth ( literally LOL ) or less
keep up the great posts :-)

Life is Good @ steemit

Hi @codypanama I also have high hopes for this site. Steemit can do wonders for countries that aren't as fortunate as us. I also have been spreading the word, today I got 2 people to sign up, one at a gas station where i use using a BTC ATM and the other was a friend in PR. Thank you for your feedback :)

This is awesome and well said.

Thank you, @ehiboss. I appreciate your response.

I think we are in a golden age right now, but I think it'll last for a while, and more than that, regardless of what happens, the connections made here are going to lead to great things that last. In 10 days I already have a whole list of people I'd love to meet.

I like the parallel with the early days of the internet, brought back some memories, and yeah it does feel similar! The innocence of a platform of friendly strangers, not yet monopolized.

Thanks @whatamidoing, I'm happy you have made so many new positive connections here already. :)

I don't know, surely things could change when steemit get mainstream, but i think (hope) it will be for the better, right now we are on beta, there are many things yet to learn and to upgrade... What if for sure, is at least the idea of steemit is revolutionary, even if steemit fails getting mainstream, other platform should adopt and improve this idea, steemit is the first step into the future...

Hi @dreamrafa I agree there are definitely more benefits making revolutionary over other social media and we are only in beta as you mentioned. Thanks for your input.

I can't see how Steemit going mainstream, could be bad in any sense? Facebook makes money out of the content created by it's users and rewards them with jack shit. Steemit becoming mainsteam means less people are being ripped off. Subsiquently facebooks active users will go down as they transition from fb to steemit. I only see positivity. Maybe I have tunnel vision lool.

I know exactly what you are driving at. I think Steemit may lose its smallness. I can feel it just a bit already. I am on here a lot and would always see people I know posting etc. Now its getting more and more uncommon as we are growing and spreading out with the recent influx of new accounts. I am going to hope for the best! BTW I'm new to your page and followed :)

Thanks for your feedback. I agree with everything you said and I think we will turn out ok in the long run! followed back.

meep

Thank you :) @arcaneinfo I followed back!

Indeed, steemit is an excellent platform like no other in the web. We should be thankful for having this opportunity and had given a chance to join at its early stage.

Like you, you joined the platform just a while ago and look at you now, you have an amazing growth. Congratulations.

Hope you can share you achievements to your friends and families. Inviting them to come over and also join in this amazing community.

Hi @juvyjabian I love it here and its def. a one of a kind platform. I see you are doing great to and I do believe in paying it forward to this great community. Thanks for your comment.

Youre from where mate?

I'm a female! Is mate both female and male?!?!? my background is Italian, Puerto Rican, Greek, and Scottish. I'm a mix! I speak 5 languages though. I'm from North Jersey/NYC area originally but moved to Florida when I was young and have lived here since then. Where are you from? Australia or England?!?

If I know me, I'll be excited. I'll do a post and watch it garner more money than I am used to getting. Then I'll say to myself "now what?"

Hi @natxlaw I will be excited too! I will stay with the community i'm building to make sure steemit stays great for ever. :)

That's my plan. We're building something wonderful here.

:)

Steemit is a social phenomenon. :)

I agree 110% 🙂
