Suddenly, as they gathered, there came the unexpected disaster. A river from nowhere rushed towards the park and covered the entire site and even spread across the entire community. Everyone was on the run.
As they ran, the river seemed to run after them and before they could run beyond the bounds of Ofesi, they were all caught up by the river.
Surprisingly, elder Sonkwe who once maintained that treating mtsinje-lunga in such a manner was wrong had his house very intact, despite the damage done by the river.
It was shocking to note that his household was absolutely untouched by the strange river.
Of course, he and the members of his family did not leave their home that day, as they stayed to mourn the peaceful river,
but they were surprised to see their kinsmen running up and down and their houses being swallowed by the strange river. Yet, Sonkwe’s house and his household were untouched.

After the pandemonium, elder Sonkwe and the few elders who were not around during the disaster, decided to visit the oracle to unravel the mystery behing the disaster. Surprisingly, they were told that the mtsinje-lunga had taken vengeance on them over the negligence done to it since the inception of time.
The river spoke angrily through the oracle that it had stayed and endured with the people of Lunga for hundreds of years without any form of appreciation. Rather, they were planning to eliminate it at the slightest opportunity.
Therefore, it had taken the vengeance on them and had returned to take its place and on no account should anyone, whether dead or alive think that he would purse it out of the place given to it by nature. As the river spoke, the men were in serious anguish and fear.
Finally, the people of Lunga made some sacrifice as a way of appeasing the river, and as directed by the oracle and gradually, the river which had occupied the entire community, began to clear away and finally settled at its former site.
However, the people and the houses that it had already swallowed could not be retrieved. It also enforced through the oracle that henceforth, the community of Lunga would have to apportion a day out of the seven days in a week, to honour it. They chose the fourth day, as the gods of the river represented the 'Lachinayi’.
Since then, there has been peace and tranquility in Lunga community and indeed, its offspring had not only honoured their river, but had also revered it.
