What's the difference between Steemit, Minds, and Gab?

in steemit •  7 years ago

I'm too lazy to check the other two out for myself so was just curious if someone can give some quick bullet points as well as maybe a pro's and con's list of Steemit vs Minds, vs Gab?

The past couple days I've been hearing rumblings about Minds and Gab. I guess they all claim to be open source and alternatives to Youtube, Twitter, and traditional social media.

I did notice that Minds seems to have a way to earn where as Gab doesn't. Just curious if anyone who's tried all three can give us a quick breakdown?

I hadn't heard of either one of these and your post was the first thing I saw in my feed today and then suddenly I spent 4 hours looking at this stuff. LOL.

I just posted a review of Minds.com. It was kind of interesting.

Yeah Gab didn't look as interesting to me as Minds, I think I may give it a try just to see what it's all about

I think the way to play Minds is to connect Facebook and Twitter to it. So for instance if you have Twitter connected to your YouTube account and you upload a video then maybe you could get it to blow your content to Twitter and then it would automatically put it on Minds as well. So it would just be another place your content got shown on and you would be casting a larger net but you wouldn't spend time there unless it got really big in the future.

That is my thinking.

Gab is basically a 300 character twitter account.

Here's a video from the CEO

And Minds is like a decentralized Facebook based on a karma reward system.

Here's a good video to explain everything on it further.

Hope this helped - cheers man ! Check out my profile I just posted my first introductory post. If you like it give it an upvote, would be much appreciated.

I am using both Steemit and Minds at the moment. Doing some testing between both but it seems that Steemit is more blog-centric while Minds is more Instagram-like.....

fwiw:
Gab = Twitter
Minds = Facebook
Steem = Medium

nice summary and makes it simple for a complete noob like me, thank you

Also YouTube = DTube

dtube is slow

Based on what? Your experience? Or actual metrics? Not trying to be rude, I'm just getting started with DTube and am wondering what the problem looks like.

I've been doing the same research, this article on steemit from back in 2016 was most enlightening. There is definitely a huge market/gap/race on but I'm not sure we have a winner yet.

Minds is the oldest platform among of these. It has a design similar to Facebook. Although it advocates free speech, the fact remains, it is a centralized platform. Users get rewarded by points in various ways, and by simply visiting the site every hour.

GAB on the other hand is the Twitter equivalent of Minds, only that it doesn't have a reward system in place unlike Minds.

In my opinion, Minds is more open to free speech than GAB. I have read some feedback regarding GAB censoring some of their user's posts lately.

When it comes to popularity and SEO perspective, GAB is more optimized than Minds.

The last time I heard, both Minds and GAB are on the way to launch their own social media token. Will they be running on top of a blockchain this time around? I don't know for sure about Minds but there are rumors about GAB will be using the EOS protocol.

I came to indirectly discovered GAB and Steemit through Minds. You can follow me here, and there, and there, using the same username IntrovertSpeaks.

Here is something I do not understand though: how much is a Minds point/token worth in U.S. Dollars?

1,000 views on Minds = 1,000 Points

1,000 Points = 1 Minds Token

1 Minds Token = $ Price to be determined because the token is not listed yet on any exchanges.

I hope it did satisfy your confusion.

I don't know Gab. For me as a user, new-to-Stemmit and old to Minds, both seem pretty much the same when it comes to topics or payout. Minds, however, forces you to see other people's boosted posts and has not so good filtering. From creators perspective, I am too new to Stemmit to judge. But I believe both sites can make you some money.

Technology protecting the sites is described by alexandermeta pretty well. If you are afraid of censorship or such, Stemmit should be better choice.

GAB is a viable, free speech oriented, Twitter replacement. It has clone functionality for Twitter (max 300 char posts, #hashtag oriented), with some of Facebook's functionality (GIFs and images). Looks better than Twitter. Functionality still under development.

MINDS on the other hand seeks to do the same thing regarding Facebook in particular, offering the same functionality. I see Minds and Gab as not mutually exclusive.

How they both compare to Steemit is now relatively easy to see, Steemit is unique and different from them in just the same ways it is different from Facebook and Twitter, in terms of functionality, but more or less the same as them in terms of free speech. However, Steemit is blockchain based, hence inside corruption may not arise in the future in the same way either of them might allow at least in theory (though there is no saying this will happen).

Hope this helps.
