How I would explain Steemit to my Grandma!

in steemit •  8 years ago

Steemit is a pretty complex platform, and explaining all the stuff that goes on behind it and makes the site work isn't easy to explain ...

So how would I be able to explain the concept of steemit to someone who has absolutely no technical knowledge, like my grandma?

Here I go:

You know how money is being printed right? It's a factory with huge machines that print the dollar bills.

But now instead of the machines in a factory, imagine people writing articles.
We don't get paid with dollar bills, but we get paid in a currency called STEEM.
When we write an article, it's like our very own production of the currency STEEM.
STEEM is just like the dollar, the euro or the british pound - it's a currency.
So if I'd like to use my salary, I have to simply exchange STEEM for the currency that is useful to me!

The better I work, the more salary I get - makes sense, right?

But in this job you don't have a fixed salary.
Your salary depends on several factors, like how much effort I put into my work, how much I work, and more.
Now if people like my work, they can actually give me a tip and that will be extra money for me.

Certain people are always walking around the factory, checking people's work, and giving them tips.

It's a very very large factory, so it's easy to lose track of all the workers, and if you don't stand out, you might not earn much at first.

The factory has a very smart surveillance system and everything we workers to can be traced back.

It's like a very strict Boss from whom you can't hide anything.
But that's also great because nothing will ever be lost or deleted - the factory keeps a record of everything that has been going on within!

Obviously, this does not explain the WHOLE concept of steemit...
But I guess seeing it this way makes it a lot easier to explain than talking about cryptocurrency and blockchain!

How would you explain Steemit to someone without technical knowledge?! Or have you maybe done so already?

Nice posts! Actually I wouldnt try to explain anything other than how to write a posts. I would basically tell them to put their thoughts and ideas together and share them with the world. I would only mention that if enough people like what they have written, then a reward may be given to them. Of course, once they get rewarded, explain the options of holding(ideal) and withdrawing.

I wouldnt complicate things by trying to explain the steem blockchain in one sitting. It will take the average person weeks, and in most cases months to wrap their heads around this innovative tech.

Yes, I am still kinda one of them lol. #MinnowLife

Yup, KISS. Not even people who use facebook know what the hell blockchain is lol. My grandmother has trouble using a computer, so blockchain is beyond the scope hehe.

I would explain it thusly:

People write about stuff that they are interested in.
Other people who are interested in the same stuff, read it, vote on it and comment on it.

This activity has value, just like the hours that you spend at work have value.

The more people like what you write, the more money you make, just like if you worked more hours you would get paid more.

The money for this comes from the North Pole and is made by Santa's elves during the off season when they are not gearing up for Christmas. This explains why there was a lot of it about in June, but not much around now.

Make sense?

LOL, also very good lol

Man, that is so awesome. LOL

I am still learning my way thru all this, that is really unique, what you did here, Kudos to you.

UV and RS for you!!! Thumbs up! That factory talk you came up with is crystal-clear!

I agree with the other comments, keep it simple that there are potential rewards for posting, commenting and voting.

The one additional point i personally like to include that these aren't tips that have to come directly out from one's pocket. It's awarded from a daily created "prize pool."

After this, i like to wait for them to actually ask the next questions which I've prepared things for under the #ambassadortoolkit tag. :)
