Steemit: Social Justice warriors, free speech and censorship. Dynamics of Steemit VS Youtube

in steemit •  7 years ago  (edited)

You guessed it right. My subscription list on Youtube would make any social justice warrior get a heart attack and die. Paul Joseph Watson, Black Pigeon Speaks, Stefan Molyneux, Jordan Peterson, Angry Foreigner, Aaron Clarey, Pewdiepie (the nazi!) and Squatting Slav - to mention a few.

The video

I just watched this recent video (link below) from Squatting Slav where he informs that his account was banned for a time just recently. The first video that was flagged was one where he was interviewing asylum seekers in Bosnia. The second was for asking questions to Black Lives Matter demonstrators. And the third and final flag, that got his account suspended was a video where he was asking for donations on Patreon.

That's when he realized something was up. Why would a video like that be flagged? The asylumseeker and BLM-videos were not racist or hateful. But for the lunatic left merely asking question is literally Himmler.

Then someone called Ben the trusted flagger tweeted to him that he had found a Facebook-group where SJW's were plotting to flag him a third time, because they had seen him get two flags. The story get's even crazier at this point. Squatting Slav's channel was down and he had given up. Now back in Canada, all of a sudden he gets a DM from Ben, who says his channel is back up. And it was. So this guy - ben the trusted flagger, whoever he is, managed to reinstate his youtube channel.

Discussion

Now..that is the problem with Youtube. Someone doesn't like your content, they can just organize and flag the shit out of you, and if Youtube agrees they will just make it really hard for you to complain. Apparently people like Ben the trusted flagger exist, and is able to help people. But for a lot of people who are way less known than Squatting Slav (111k subs) their accounts will be gone for ever.

On Steemit on the other hand, the system works differently and is in my opinion much better. If someone doesn't like my content for example, they would need a certain amount of Steempower to make a difference. Even a organized attack could prove difficult considering the fact that my account is relatively "powerful" (It's at 2000th place, so not very powerfull compared to dolphins and whales, but compared to the 30-40k other active account that are smaller than mine it's pretty powerful)

I would however have a problem if a whale chose to attack me for my opinions, but there are two relevant arguments I can make:

  1. My account can't be banned - only it's content, and it is just no longer visible - it's still there.
  2. The "attacker" takes risk in attacking me, because he doesn't know who supports me. A powerful whale or more could have my back.

So basically there is an ideological balance here. Or at least some. Most people here are "positive" and not involved in politics, and there are some "anarchists"(communists) here. But there is also a decent amount of real anarchists (ancaps, voluntaryists) here. And the power seems to be somewhat evenly distributed between ideologies, which increases the risk for someone engaged in flagging and attempts at censorship. First of all he must have a more powerful account, or he must involve others with more powerful accounts than their victim. But then they must face the chance that the victim has powerful allies.

This is in my opinion the beauty, and a great example of decentralization.

Your thoughts?

This is 100% the reason why I joined the Steemit Community. I like knowing that witch hunts ain't gonna fly here. There's an inherent risk involved in even attempting one, knowing it could just as easily backfire all up in your own face.

Printed content and video alike, and really only a community downvote could snuff it.

But certainly not any SJWs or people that just don't like an opinion presented because it conflicts with their own ideologies.

Steemit may be the bastion of hope that so many have longed for for so long.

And with any luck, it'll keep gaining momentum.

Keep fighting the good fight.

Great comment. Good luck on Steemit!

@scandinavianlife , what you just explained is another advantage from blockchain and the desentralized concept put in full practice. This is the direction the world is going, and nobody can stop it. No more 1984 from George Orwell on the governments. It is the time for individuals to raise the power. No need for anybody to be the controller or centralize power. Your thoughts? @gold84

Absolutely @gold84 This is what scares the government. But don't forget that it also scares people. It is a scary thought - to be completely free and responsible for yourself. But it is the only moral way to go. I don't think we will see freedom from oppression from governments in my lifetime. But I hope that our voices will raise some awareness and that more young people will understand.

I totally agree with you @scandinavianlife , my thoughts are that even we will not see total freedom from governments in our life, maybe our grandsons are closer. The good thing is we are showing the light, the path, and today's technology improvements are making this a possibility. Something unthought a few years ago by most of the world population. @gold84

It all comes down to control. Controlling what people can say. What they can do. What they can think. It's a slippery slope when we encourage government or other institutions to control speech since its only a matter of time before someone wants to silence you.

Always justice wins, it's just a matter of time.
