Ah, the old "without government, who will build the roads?" It's the question that anarchists are faced with at every turn. No one can comprehend how even the simplest things might be accomplished without government.
There have been many, many, many answers to this question. I've never had my own solid proposal until yesterday when...
I had a brainwave...
Steem could build the roads.
It wouldn't necessarily have to be Steem, but I was imagining a blockchain solution to this problem that operates under the same principals.
What if there was an inflationary cryptocurrency (like Steem) that rewarded contributions to infrastructure?
Seriously. If cryptocurrency can be used to provide real market value to the attention ecomony, why can't it do the same for anything else in the world that people might deem valuable?
There are tons of things in the world that people want, but don't necessarily want to pay for. These things range from the social media attention economy to all sorts of so-called "basic human right" services that many governments "freely" provide to their citizens.
- Roads & Infrastructure
- Healthcare
- Education
Steem broke the cryptocurrency mold by offering a share of its inflation to more than just miners who earn it through objective proof of work. Steem found a way to reward those who provide subjective value to an online community by writing, creating art, music, videos, even memes.
Could the same thing be done for those who create roads and bridges, lay pipes, erect power lines and so on and so on and so on?
These services could be rewarded by a community with vested shares in the blockchain. The better (or more popular) a service or contribution, the more money they could stand to make.
I truly don't know if this could work in the real world, but if Steem is any indication, it's a definite possibility.
I was just talking with someone about using a blockchain for county property records. Then accessing them would be nearly free instead of some dusty old room full of books.

That could be a great innovation! But you'd have to be wary of inflation. Up to what point would it be attractive to keep that crypto and how long would it be sustainable?
Steem on!

Of course. I'm not building the system so I don't have all the details worked out!

An absolutely great idea. You are onto something with this. This concept can be applied to many areas of life. Steem created a model which they are already carrying into publishing. Why couldnt this be carried out to all aspects of life?
I think it could. It will be interesting to watch to see what Steem, itself, expands into. Perhaps @ned will get into the building roads and bridges.

The roads in my neck of the woods are horrible so they can only improve if they were incentivized through your idea. I'm a fan of the idea behind seasteading but currently it's more like speculative science fiction but this could make it plausible.

Basically any idea that will take the roads out of government hands will incentivize better quality of development and maintenance.
Yea, I can't imagine seasteading becoming a reality for a long time.

If it can't be a reality in the near future I'd settle for a TV series about it. It could be like Firefly meets Seaquest with Baywatch attire.

I really like this post. Exciting and positive possibilities are not usually brought to focus these days. Your spirit and enthusiasm is so needed. Thank you.

If only I had the code/blockchain/tech know-how to bring my spirit, enthusiasm and ideas to fruition lol!
But hey, maybe someone who does know how to do these things will see my post and set it in motion.

I love it, @sethlinson. I've been thinking of something similar, but hadn't quite expressed it yet. Seems like such a blockchain would allow the collective community to vote and establish the project priorities and associate value to specific job roles and project execution. This would naturally would facilitate project/skill fit and incentivize people to fill gaps, and educate/improve their own skillsets to be productive in this new economy of decentralized, truly democratic decision making. I wonder if there is an existing project that is aiming at this type of civic facility yet?

@sethlinson I actually had a discussion about such possibilities with my wife, but din't think of it this way specifically. I think you outlined the very basic idea that is needed to get things going. Now we need a collective who will look into it and expand upon it. Byt the way, just wanted to say thank you for upvoting my post yesterday - means alot!
