Good day Steemians. I thought that I should share this with you so that no further Steemian fall foul to some very unscrupulous hackers right here under our noses on Steemit.
On the 16th August 2018, my friend and fellow Steemian, @kaeley, fell victim to these thieves. While surfing the Steemit site, she came across an advert posted by @habibur81 promising that if she signed up for some upvote and resteem service run by @housam1, she will be credited with 5 Steem. The 5 Steem was to be credited in 24 hours. Being a minnow, she saw this as a perfect opportunity to add some much needed Steem to her wallet.
However she got suspicious when, after signing up for the service, she could not log into her account. She kept getting a message that she was entering a wrong password even though she knew this to be the right password. She is 100% sure that she has never disclosed her password to a soul. It has turned out that @habibur81's account was in the hands of hackers who posted the advert. I am not sure if @habibur81 has been able to recover his account by now.
Three days ago, 1.503 SBD and 1.542 Steem was fraudulently transferred from @kaeley's account to @warrentto's account. Fortunately what they transferred was all that was in the wallet at that moment. Imagine if there was a whole stack there!! It turns out there is not a single post, comment or reply in @warrentto's account. From @warrento's account there is a trail of several accounts presumably the hackers trying to launder the stolen Steem. From @warrentto, now meeting up with transfers from other accounts, who were presumably also hacked, it goes on to @stecm's account. Then on to @stecemit account and then to @deepcrypto8/ @cpzhao and to @binance-hot. From here there are large transfers to a host of accounts including @bittrex which at the time of writing this article has about 23,706,964.511 Steem and $10,502,379.950 SBD. Talk about money!
At this time @kaeley does not know if she will be able to recover her account. @quarantine is helping her in the recovery and lets hope all goes well.
Most important of all, this is a warning to all of you Steemians out there to exercise extreme caution and be extra careful when going about your daily Steemit business.
Thank you all and have a nice day.
