STEEMIT TIPS: Commenting Don'ts! How Spam Commenting Can Hurt You

I have posted in other places about how important it is to leave comments on Steemit to increase your exposure, build a network, gain followers, and boost your reputation score.

However!

Beware the temptation to spam irrelevant comments.

Here is an example from the user "Cat friend"

Screenshot (104).png

Check for yourself.

It is literally hundreds of completely irrelevant comments. In fact, there's a good chance that this account will reply to this very post with the same "nice post" and a picture of a cat reply. We will soon see.

Why this is bad

This is the sort of thing that will get your account noticed -- in a BAD way.

EXAMPLE from @neoxian

When you spam irrelevant comments, you are increasing your likelihood of being flagged, and also spreading to the rest of the Steemit community that you are an inauthentic, insincere user trying to abuse the system.

Don't do this.

What TO do

READ THE POSTS TO WHICH YOU RESPOND.

Know what you are responding to and be honest about what you say. Don't try to game Steemit by spamming in other people's posts.

I know there is pressure to make as many comments as possible -- because commenting IS a fantastic way to increase reputation and build followers -- but the quality of those comments is what makes all the difference.

One quality comment is worth at least 10 spammy ones.

So stay classy, Steemians: make your comments count.

The lost art of reading comprehension! The new disease of spam bots. I am on the side of reading and understanding.

As any person with a rational mind would be! :D

I love the comments on a Steemit, but it's a little disheartening to get a spam comment. I'd rather have no comments than get a "Nice post :-)" from someone who never even read it.

I agree with this. It feels like being used. Especially if you reply and get no reply back, and then you know it was a robopost. Feels bad.

This! Lots of "nice post" and "good article" comments there. I am not complaining. It just needs to be reduced though.

Agreed

This whole post looks like spam to me :).

It probably is................

..........................................................................................!

Yup you're right. Don't wanna end up like Matrix dweller :)

Which one was that? It's been a while since I've seen the matrix.

There was a user named matrixdweller who spammed the hell out of everyone's posts. Dropped from rep68 to -13 since I last checked. I was talking about him.

Oh shit!
Lol yeah, don't end up like that guy.

Steemit is a friendly, open place -- if YOU are a friendly, open person. If you're a troll or a spammer, expect harsh retribution. ;)

Yeah you're right.

I've seen these "nice posts" on my posts a lot. Usually by the same person. Sometimes I wonder if they are botting or if they actually commented in real life

Probably bots.
:/

I was getting a bit worried about bots controlling the Steemit platform the other day. Then I realized that Bitcoin has POW, which means they only have "bots" doing the work.

As long as we have genuine humans here, we can handle the bots.

Lol @ Cat Friend.

You know, I thought it wasn't a spam!

Then I saw the same comment elsewhere...

I am like: "This dude is trolling."

Took me a while to figure out the guy was playing no games here. Lol.

I love commenting and engaging. It truly is fun! However, my question is, do you upvote comments?

I was reading that upvoting is limited - to 40 per day - so if we upvote comments in our post, we reduce the power to upvote other articles, isn't it?

It works something like that. I'm not sure exactly of the technical, but I'd go with your understanding. My approach to upvoting comments is to do it for comments that I really, really like.

I see. Such a shame! I wish to upvote everyone here!

If you upvote at 100% all the time then yes, 40 votes within a 24 hour span will drain all your voting power.

You can always check your voting power by going to steemd.com/@<your-username>

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong because it wouldn't be the first time.

Great link! Yes, ch can it out!

Thank you @fulltimegeek.

That link has quite a lot of info I never knew!

My voting power is, actually, at 100%.

So I am voting everyone now.

I also read that these voting powers are "replenished" after x days. But isn't it a shame that we have to keep control of what we like?

We become very picky, isn't it?

Also, there is NO HARM in voting everyone, right? There are days where I like some stuff so much that I upvote all the comments of that post too...

Just want everyone to enjoy a good upvote, you see!

EDIT: After upvoting your comment, my VP is now 99.57%.

nice post ... ;) ... just kidding; I am new to the site so thanks for the tips.

You're welcome :D please do check out the other two articles I linked at the top of this post for more advice on how to be successful with Steemit.

Great post, it's so important to say something relevant and not to link drop also!!

Oh, don't EVER link drop! Like, what is this -- Twitter! Lol

Thanks :)

Sometimes there is relevance in including a link to a post or your own post which is related to the subject under discussion.....surely?? I have on occassions done this and received positive feedback.

I'd do it if someone asked, basically.

Nice post. Did you spot the irony there? We need to educate the new users. Once they start coming in big numbers we are likely to see a lot of spam.

Indeed.

I also see this happening when @zappl goes live.

Thanks for commenting!

So much love for Zappl?

I think it'll transform this place.

Good post. Thank you for this information, valuable things to know for us new to the platform :)

Thank you. I'm not particularly whale-ish or an old-timer, but I've been doing alright around here lately and I'm happy to share advice that has helped me :)

Thank you for your help I wasn't aware of this. I do appreciate you making me aware, God bless !

And bless you!

One quality comment is worth at least 10 spammy ones.

Is like you say. To make spammy comments, better don´t doing anything.

Right. For your own good and the good of the community at large.

For me, "nice post" could mean two things: Or a sarcasm, or his/her language is not English. At least is what I feel.

Possible. But still, more effort to actually engage will go a long way.

How I wish to reply to your comment with a "nice post..."

How. I. Wish.

Following you shayne! What type of games do you develop?

Mobile so far. But we have a pc game in the mix presently.

this needs to be known to all the steemians, especially new ones
thank you! resteemed

I hope the lesson is learned. Though I have a feeling it won't be by most.
Thanks!

ok, so would it be ok if I said,... wait for it,..... nice post? But seriously, I get your point and I agree. You have a new follower by the way.

Thanks for this post. These spammers are beginning to annoy me!
