The Unknown Steem Update in the Shadow of SMT That Will Change EVERYTHING

in steemit •  6 years ago

While SMTs (Smart Media Tokens) are being hyped by the entire Steem network, another, unknown update is coming that could change the Steem ecosystem for the better.

SMTs will bring the price of Steem up massively, but will they really fix many problems on Steem? Yes, they will bring the Steem technology forward, but what about the Steem community? As I wrote in my previous post, engagement on Steem suffers, and we all know it is difficult to find quality content on the platform.

The Steem development team is working on a new project called Steem communities. Anyone will be able to create a community, which acts similar to a subreddit on Reddit. Communities can be public, or only certain people can post in them. People can also ‘follow’ communities, which puts all posts from that community in their feed.

Any user can create a new community, and each becomes a tuned 'lens' into the blockchain. Currently, there is one large window into the Steem blockchain and that is the global namespace as shown on Steemit.com. This is not ideal because everyone effectively has to share a single sandbox while having different goals as to what they want to see and what they want to build.

But these communities are not very rigid at all, and can be used for many different purposs. One example might be a reddit-style subreddit, and another possibility is curation guilds. This could also be used to create Steem-based news organizations where there are multiple users posting in one community, the news platform.

We could also create things like Medium’s publications, content curators who find amazing but undervalued content and resteem it through a community. Just look at The Mission, an extremely prestigious publication on Medium where getting one post on it will get you a thousand followers and a lot of money.

This could allow for undervalued posts to be shown to the masses, removing the upvote inequality here on Steemit right now. It could enhance engagement, as users who are interested in similar topics can band together in communities. For example, I would love to see a 3d printing and DIY community With @makerhacks’s interesting posts, I could definitely see a community based around interests similar to his.
