The same thing happens to me too. When I share my posts on the steemit.chat channels ( just in the channels for promotion) immediatly I receive 2/3 private messages. Some thes message are just link to the post of someone else (no "hi", no other words, just the link). In this case I ignore them, but I also receive some different message by people who looks like want to be "friend". Sure, I know they don't want a friendship, but just an easy way to have some upvotes. The wrost was an user who contact me 2/3 times wrote me messages like "Hi, I love your post." "Hi, I just read your post and it's super" etc . Many many congrats before to ask me to read (upvote) her/his page, but he/she never upvoted my post. They search an easy way to have upvotes (especially from people with a good rep), but they use all their voting power to upvote just theirselves. Double mistakes, in my opinion.
Some of my best posts have been about commenting advice. I say to leave lots of comments, but ALWAYS read the post before you even think about commenting, and comment about the post. I know this has also been your advice.
These worthless generic "nice post" type comments are choking the platform and making it look really inauthentic lately. On other, non monetized platforms, posts from small accounts get little to no engaugemdnt at all, but here on steemit there seems to be an army of bots that will spam the same comment across a hundred posts / day no matter the account or its contents, so you'll see posts that would be largely unnoticed on other platforms getting a handful of worthless spam comments instead.
It's a problem. I've been resorting to flagging, which is not something I like doing, but some cleanup is required around here and the system puts that responsibility on the user.
Well put Steve. I'm still a newby as well and have had a flying start thanks to Dsound and some contests. Have come in contact with many awesome new people and it's much more rewarding getting a higher reputation by adding quality content than by 'begging ' for upvotes. Cheers
Steemit is a great platform but not all Steemians use it on full time basis. People have their jobs/other responsibilities. So, it makes compete sense to say NO to others because that's for sure not the way to get support from someone. Content is king and the best way to get someone's support is writing good content (posts/comments) and then sticking to it. I think that is what they call branding. Another key point in this regard is commenting on posts that are most relevant to one's niche. Nice guide @steevc.
I completely agree to that. It's sad that you're facing these issues. But the truth is that no one at least not me likes to ignore messages from people. But you being a whale get a lot of requests like that and it's not possible for you to engage with everyone of them. Besides there is no point of dropping a comment for having a comment on the post but the whole idea must be to engage in a meaningful conversation with people.
I don't consider myself a whale. I can't live from what I make here. For now it's hard to get the money out anyway. I'm more interested in watching things grow

I don't promote on Chat, but they find me anyway. I would block anyone who pestered me like that.

I do flag some to try and deter them. I love getting comments, but some make me wonder why they do it

buying friends is the norm anywhere. It's just like a spam comment. Ignore forever.
