What is That Number Next to My Steemit Name? [steemit][reputation]

- The Quest for Reputation -

The Steemit network is quite young, and is constantly on boarding new users to this amazing platform. I want to give a brief description of what that number next to your name is for those that are new and somewhat new to the Steemit platform. The number next to your name starts at 25, and can quickly climb a few points if you begin to engage on the Steemit network by posting, commenting and replying. That number is your reputation score on Steemit, and as long as you adhere to some Steemit basics of not plagiarizing, spamming, scamming or being detrimental to Steemit or others on Steemit, then your reputation score should climb higher as you participate, but it will get harder to increase reputation with each increase. For example, going from a reputation of 29 to 30 will be much harder than when going from 28 to 29.

Your Steemit reputation number can also go down and even wind up in the negative below zero. It is important to avoid harming your reputation. Like in real life, character will determine your reputation, so to on Steemit. It is important that you care what other think of you while on Steemit, because that will ultimately determine your success here on Steemit. Please don't let others on Steemit fool you into thinking you can buy your reputation because while you can pay for up votes from Steemit accounts with higher reputation numbers, this will only work up to a certain point before it becomes very expensive. The best way to increase your reputation is by following the Steemit basics, by posting your own material, and truly engaging with others on this platform. Please don't think that by commenting "good job" or "nice artwork" or other generic statements is engaging, it is more spammy than anything and will not help you but hurt you.

I tried to find more material on reputation in the Steemit white paper but there wasn't much there in regards to user reputation. I found these posts by other Steemit users that might interest you if you want more of the technicals behind Steemit reputation.

I consider these must reads:

What is Steemit Rep. by @arcange This one is a little older but has some good basic information as well as charts and technical code regarding Steemit Reputation by @arcange

Steemit Reputation and How it's Calculated by @ilyastarar This is more recent post on reputation by @ilyastarar . This one also dives into technical aspects of Steemit reputation as well as gives insight into how Steemit reputation can affect your rewards on Steemit as well.

Illustrated Guide to Steemit Reputation by @sndbox This is a good article that somewhat simplifies how reputation works on Steemit. It also helps clear up some misconceptions about Steemit reputation by @sndbox

After reading these articles on Steemit reputation, you will have a better understanding of why it is important to cherish and protect your reputation while nurturing its growth on this quest we call Steemit.

Reputation is everything in life, it helps us show the kind of conduct and life we lead and how people value is as a result of that.

I think ever since bid-bots became a thing , the reputation itself lost value overall. I grinded my ass off to get a good rep, still, nobody cares to click on my cute posts:) lol Okay man have good one!

Reputation is something very important to me in real life and here in Steemit, it is our business card as we could say out there. I would love to get to the "70" because most accounts at that level are quite successful, it is also the highest step of the community. Once you start to show that your content is original and comes from you, improving is fast.

Obviously we still have a long way to go as each level is much longer than the previous one, but this is not about a race, this is about demonstrating your contribution to the members here and the people who read you. It's about gaining confidence, gain followers, win the attention of all kinds of people to see that you upload content or comment in a prominent way.

Great info about Reputation @streetstyle, being a minnow I know how hard it is to get noticed without at least 50-55+ reputation. I am working so hard to increase my reputation points, post like this will definitely help us more, thanks for sharing.

@Vsrsatish yes it can be hard to get noticed. It usually is a combination of things such as your content, your engagement with others here on the steemit platform, consistency and time. There are other factors but these are significant on Steemit. The hardest one to overcome in my opinion is Time. Good luck and don't give up.

indeed,
Worry more about your character than your reputation. Character is what you are, reputation merely what others think you are.

upvoted

That's the way it should be.

And that is why you have a 7.

Yeh, Absolutely right... I appreciate you
We should be more concerned with your character than our reputation, because our character is what we really are, while our reputation is merely what others think we are.
#upvote done

Don't take it easy, if you want to gain this reputation in a valid way, like creating content and getting upvotes from the community, you can also be got them by commenting on other's profile. from 25 to 32 you just need to get 1 sbd upvotes. and then from 37 it got more complex and hard, There is another way to increase your reputation which is getting upvotes from bid votes!

upvoted your post.

Yeah i also agree with you sir @streetstyle.
Like in real life, character will determine your reputation, so to on Steemit grrat work.
Thanks for sharing.

I didn't know that my reputation could go down... I suppose this happens when someone flags you. Could a reputation increase to more than 70? I think I've never seen a higher one, thanks for this post!! :)

Hello @adrianachenille And yes, reputation can increase past 70. The highest I know of is 80 but I won't say who since he is a questionable character here on Steemit.
As for going below zero with reputation, @berniesanders had that happen to him, but his rep. score has since recovered...amazing. Read about it Here

yeah number next to our name is seriously very important and exactly it's harder to attain and maintain strongly agree with your point.

Please don't think that by commenting "good job" or "nice artwork" or other generic statements is engaging, it is more spammy than anything and will not help you but hurt you.

how you dealt with such kinda comments? as i can see your posts are one of those on which people love to do comment so...

Thanks for you input @xawi I generally ignore generic comments and generally try to support those that are genuine with their comments.
Yes there are many bots trying to comment to get an up vote so I do have to watch out for that. Bots and their comments are considered spam in my opinion, so if it blatantly spammy I will flag it or down vote.
Earlier someone or a bot actually copied and pasted someone else's comment to another of my posts and placed it another of my posts. I caught this and then down voted it only to have it followed by a 'sorry sir,' which was probably a bot replying too.
Bots, watch out!

That Reputation is of no use now people can buy vote and can go up in just a single day where as who don't use these methods can spent years to climb up that was a time when reputation means everything on this platform but now its just a joke sorry for this comment but i said what i feel like

Don't be sorry for your opinion @blazing especially since you do have a point that people can pay voting services but this only works up to a certain point because if they are paying for their reputation 1) it helps spread the use of Steem as currency which in turn helps all of us and 2) eventually those who are buying up votes to only increase their reputation will have to spend more and more Steem just to increase their reputation by 1 point. Then the next point up will cost them even more because each point higher is 10x more difficult to achieve than the prior one. So you see, this can only work for users with a low reputation score, and to achieve a 64 like yourself should require quiet a bit of Steem.

Well you are quite right there after a certain point i guess of reputation level 62 things really get hard to climb up lot of maths involve in that good for steemians ;)

yes, reputation is important for steemians that determine how good bloger or writer or photographer you are. and its going harder after reach every new reputation achievements. i think this article has shown us how to be a good steemian as well as increase your reputation.

@sheikh27 I don't reputation is affected as much by writing skills or themes but rather by actions taken while on Steemit. If your actions are abusive or disruptive to Steemit or other Steemians, then you will lose reputation while if you are helpful, honest and behave with the interest of others in mind, then your reputation should go sky high.

Appreciated 👍

Im at 55 rep after 4 months on Steemit - wonder how till I get to 60 - I think it will be a while! Only problem with the rep score is that it also takes into account bought votes through upvote bots! Lets hope there can be a fix for this in the future...

My aim is to be on 70 reputation and I am gaining that no matter what !

I totally agree with you.steem power can only be get by good and impressive work.buying steempower is a cheep way.thanks for this informative post.

Excellent reputation is like our life at Steemit, the higher the position, the more stepped on the platform and the lower the less appreciated, thanks for publishing this important
Greetings 😍

Good one @streetstyle and it looks like you know what you are talking about since you are creeping UP on a 70 Reputation yourself...........

Thanks @stokjockey and I actually just rounded 69 so it'll probably be a while before I hit that 70 mark... we'll see.

you are a good mentor and also a good writer..Reputation may keep a good effect on every step of life,,I hope you understand.Next target level is 70,,@streetstyle,,
Thanks for sharing

I just reached 60 today :)

And then I found your post. Coincidence? I think not. 😊

Hello @streetstyle, I just upvoted your post. I see that you put much effort into your work. Well done. Consequently, I have set up an auto upvote for all your blog posts. I will be glad if you could return the gesture. Full STEEM ahead.

Reputation is the main thing in steemit platform.

It shows the conduct and behavior towards the steem.

In real meaning it is very difficult to increase your reputation.

It is important that you care what other think of you while on Steemit, unless they are below you, then fuck 'em.

Downvotes from users with a lower reputation score than you will not hurt your score.

I do agree with the first half of your statement @funbobby51 but not so much with the second half. Even though others might have a lower reputation number and therefore they can't really hurt your Reputation here on Steemit, there are a lot more users with lower Reps. than with higher reps and that will probably be the case for a long time on Steemit. This will be the user and following base most of us will have, Steemians with lower reps. than most of us so it behooves us to remain on good terms with everyone on Steemit as much as possible. Even when disagreeing, one can disagree amicably and without rancor.

I copy and pasted the second part from the steemit.com FAQs. ;) they continue:

If your post or comment that was downvoted still received more upvotes than downvotes (weighted by SP), then the net effect on your reputation score will still be positive.

on the other hand, you never know when someone with a lower score has a huge wallet and vote you are missing out on.

Yup yup... imagine being in the first 1 million user group of Facebook which today has somewhere near 1 Billion users. Maybe Steemit doesn't fare anywhere near as good as Facepuke but even it comes up 75% shy of Reddit.com that is still some 75-100 Million users putting most of us in elite category here on Steemit.

Steemit has two barriers one is getting people to sign up and the other is retention, right now those are serious issues. The question is, when will Steemit.com stop being beta?

I think reputation also helps us capture the attention of a larger audience because it can reveal our level of commitment to the community and content development

congrats!!!! @streetstyle

Reputation increase the value ,,I hope you will do better in next time,,Thanks for sharing..
@upvoted

this is a nice content..i like it..

I totally agree with you, sir. Thanks for sharing it.

a very useful work,i strongly support the steemit program, success is always my friend,@streetstyle

Thanks for the information. I also notice that if you comply with all the rules on Steemit, then the reputation will grow .. and by reputation you can determine whether a person has come a long time or how active.

I think reputation is a main power in steemit.

Wow thank you so much for sharing. In our world today, people don't care about their reputation. They use words like "I don't care about what others think about me" That leaves us to the fact that steemit is a platform that will not only teach you to be good, but will also show you how being good is good. This is an advice I can never joke with. Thank you @streetstyle

Reputation is more than what we do on the internet. It is how we perform these actions, how we relate to others, but above all, how others perceive us. Gtacias to define what is that number and how important it is within the platform for me is very important to know this since I am relatively new excellent post and valuable information

Good job friend. keep it post.

reputation is important to all of us

maintaining the highest quality possible in ones content is direct path to succees in steemit..at least thats what i have learned...

thats why i try to give my best while writing any thing at all...and im sure the more i write the better my contents will get.... why shouldnt they? when i can follow talented content creators such as your self @ streetstyle.

Yes I agree with you. Reputation plays an important role in Steemit. If we do mistake or violate roules our reputation may go down. You have details information about various subject on reputation. Thanks for your crucial post.

69 is definitely a nice number hehe but 70 has a better ring to it. :D

O wow, you just hit the 69. I am sure you know that it is such a golden number? :P

Reputation but i think you should have highest reputation, the blogs you write are really interesting.

I agree with you. We must be able to appreciate our own work, not taking or picking up the work of others.
