i guess i am just someone who likes to post things that interest me. if other enjoy it that is a plus but i dont expect it and it doesnt bother me if they dont. i guess because i am not much of an indoor person i am not as good at making online friends and becoming part of any real community but i can at least help from the outside

Steemit is here to help us be better in some areas, I think you have to move with the flow here and make more friends, you can help better from within than from outside.

I was the same way regarding only reading topics and posts that share my interests, but I've learned so much from expanding my reading.
Reading new members' post about topics other than my normal have really opened my eyes to many new topics and has helped me gain knowledge I never would have accumulated before steemit.
