I'm a FIRM believer that to many people, Steemit sounds "Too Good to be True."
Had I heard of this site from an advertisement (internet, TV, billboard, etc.) I'd honestly not have given it a second thought. What it took to get me to listen was having somebody I personally knew, whose judgement I respected, to tell me about this place. This instantly got me curious and asking lots of questions, like "Where does the money come from?" Outside of hearing about Bitcoin some years back, I didn't know anything about cryptocurrency, but luckily I didn't need to.

Steemit makes it so that you can sign up, earn some Steem Dollars, and work backwards by asking the question of "How do I get and/or spend my earnings?" Suddenly it's not a question of knowing everything crypto, it's a straight forward question of how can I access my earnings. I covered the basics of these questions in a previous post called What is Cryptocurrency and Why It's Not Scary, so I won't go into depth about this here.

Steemit Ambassador Challenge
Believing that traditional advertising isn't terribly effective in these early stages of Steemit, I wan't to challenge EVERY USER to talk to at least one person about Steemit. This is only meant to plant the seed in their mind that it's something YOU do, have earned from and believe in. No need to be pushy, they will join if they want to, in their own due time. Often my friends took weeks to think about it, seeing that I am still an active member here and speaking highly of the site. Many have already joined up, with others I'm expecting to join in the near future.
Just here in my mid-sized Missouri town, we've grown from @winstonwolfe and myself to include many others just through honest "Word of Mouth" advertising: @giftedgaia, @quantumanomany, @demmetros, @rubellitefae, @artistgarybedell, @jessamynorchard, @starrkravenmaf, @dburklen and I'm sure there are some I've missed.

What I'd Like From You
What I'd love to hear from you include:
- How these discussions went? (positive, negative, dismissive, etc.)
- What questions or concepts seemed to concern others, preventing them from joining?
- How comfortable were YOU in discussing Steemit or certain components?
- What topics did you find most difficult to explain?
- What worked well for you? Any people thinking about it or successful signups?
- Were people aware of the various resources available such as @charlieshrem's Steempower Editor, copy/paste ready templates, new user guides and intro post template, Steemprentice, the beginners FAQ, or the official FAQ?
Looking for Posts on Spending your Earnings
Being able to show people how accessible their money can be is important. With this in mind I'd love to hear your own experiences in SPENDING your Steemit earnings. Here's a perfect example post by @robyneggs titled I Just Bought Groceries with my First SBD! or even Bitcoin debit card reviews and/or experiences like @stealthtrader did in his Bitpay Card Review.
Videos of you using the card successfully are even better! (Be very careful to not show the card numbers OR your pin if you do a video!) But the more examples we can generate SHOWING how we spend our Steem Dollars in the real world will only make it easier to bring other people onboard with us.

Let's Be the Frontline of Marketing Steemit
We are all Steemit ambassadors, carrying around our own personal brand that others have a reason to trust. Be honest, be passionate, help others find things they see as trivial but Steemit finds value in. Regardless of if they ultimately join Steemit or not, make their day a little brighter, help them feel a little better about themselves, add YOUR value to those you care about. After all, in the end, were not just trying to build up this website...were hopefully building a better world.

Word of Mouth
Statistics Graphic
Word of mouth is no BS, either. As a photographer, I can tell you that a huge percentage of our business this year was due to business we did with our clients' friends or family last year.

Thanks for the link! I was looking for that one!
Honestly, I think this could be just as easy/effective to just have a 'type who referred you' box on signup (optional of course.) The possibility of abuse is no different than the links imo.
But in the end, all I care about is seeing more people active on here. I'm really not picky on the method, just the effect. :)

I'd seen the basic referral links around, but outside of just data tracking, there wasn't any incentive attached unfortunately. I'd honestly not bothered with the links myself because of this, instead just getting people to signup without it, since it's less 'hassle' for them in my opinion.
Now the other side of this is that those people that are brought it, naturally become a part of organic 'voting circles.' I'm by no means calling foul on this...it's natural to want to help those I know personally out to get established. (I'm sure I'd revisit my voting on this if my acct was way bigger, only so much 'passing around a penny' makes me worry about.)
I totally agree though...if nothing else..have a referral contest to get current users involved. I really don't think most people here even know the referral links exist, and those that do don't really care about them much with as it stands.

I tell people to jump on and have a 20 percent success rate or something haha. I found out through word of mouth though. I think Steemit is a great idea. People are more honest with things here, and with the incentive of long and short-term gain, people tend to make more of an effort to create something that's worth checking out. I definitely agree that the payout procedure could be more user-friendly too - this will come in time if Steemit is given a good chance. She's in beta afterall. I've got high hopes :)

Yea, there's always going to be some that get more immersed (typically through speed of 'success'). Having a real life social group definitely helps this though...especially being able to just meet up with friends and walk them through stuff, explain gotcha's first hand, give templates for them to work from, etc.
Often the main issues I've seen are:
I definitely agree with all you're points! I'm just babbling a lot this morn :P

Fantastic post, and I totally agree. You're right. If we want this to happen, we need to be a LOT more aggressive as a community... in the most tactful and persuasive way possible, of course.

I've actually been sharing my art and poetry on FB, Twitter, and Instagram, making sure that I use the Steemit hashtag and a link to follow me. I've seen a jump of random followers on Instagram but have no idea if they've joined up here.
As soon as life gets back to some sort of normalcy, I have plans to visit the local women's shelter as an Online Community Advocate for Steemit. I've been playing around with logos for some t-shirts and possibly incorporating a QR code into it. These are all ideas that I'm hoping to implement by December or sooner :)
