While waiting for a page to load fully (which has been weirdly slow the last week-ish) I took a screenshot of the above image and thought it could be part of a little experiment. Now, being under qualified by a long way, I am going to have to use some assumptions that may or may not be possible but, I am sure that something is possible. Before that though, let's look at the text that may welcome a new user.
There are 3 sentences. each one talks of getting paid. Even though someone may not know what Steem is, the dollar sign is a pretty good indicator. This obviously sends out a pretty clear message as to what Steemit offers a potential new user. Money. This is always a great way to attract people as free money is the best kind. But, it does make it sound a little cheap and scammy too.
Which brings me to the next point. Do you know why those Nigerian scam emails are written so badly? It is by design to eliminate false positives, the people who will waste the scammers time. If one can get past the bad grammar and spelling coupled with an implausible idea and still be interested, that is who they want to talk to.
When it comes to the entry text in the link, what kinds of people does it attract? Well, likely a very wide range as money appeals to everyone but it doesn't disqualify anyone at all. There is the word 'earn' which implies work for it but that is then overshadowed by FREE STEEM! When I come across things like this, I normally keep walking as free anything is rarely so.
Personally, I was introduced to the site as many others were but as Steemit is becoming more and more popular with the search engines, 'Walk in' traffic is likely to increase also. So, what I was wondering is if the data from the walk-ins can be scraped to give useful feedback for how to attract different kinds of users.
I am under the assumption that it is at least possible to follow the clicks somehow (or could be). Let's say that someone clicks the Sign Up link in the above message and do sign up. We could then track that person based on their posting and voting behavior. If we then change the message to 'Work for your money!' and they still sign up, we can track their posting behaviors. Of course, several messages would be randomized at any one time like, 'Spam and get paid! or 'We even pay robots!'
After a month or two, there is likely quite a lot of data to indicate which messages attract different kinds of behaviors and this can be used to attract more or less of certain traits. In time, as a marketing plan is really developed, it can be the basis to create material based on sectors and possibly locations too.
I have seen this message many times and every time I see it, I find it off-putting. And I am someone that is already a user and wants the platform to do astronomically well. Perhaps with really good data and a very well thought out attraction plan, we can get people in that are not only serious about making money, but also adding value.
Yes/no/maybe/gtfo?

gtfo!
just kidding :)
I think we really need to get people in here who are interested in the community aspect as opposed to the money aspect. Those who are interested in the money side are going to sign up, get bored and leave.
On the positive side, it will be good riddance that we don't have those people sticking around. On the negative side, it will look bad for Steemit having so many users with little or no-activity, and all of their activity will likely start and end with "This place is terrible, you can't make any money here", which defeats the whole point of advertising that you can make money here.
Am I the only one who thinks this way?

You are not the only one. I think in the early stages it is important to have a lot of high quality providers that will get paid enough to stay. in time, it will be able to support more of the others too, but attracting and retaining talent is important. Like any business.

I agree. Currently it looks like we're only seeing about 64,536 Actively Voting Accounts on the Platform... many of which are bots. With that kind of an "Active User Base", we're not going to be expanding too quickly. And we're definitely not going to attract and retain high quality talent when the bots are dominating the effects of the rewards pool.
Here's a quick summary backing up my analysis of the Active Voter Count:

I made a post about this earlier tonight. Link to my Blog if you're interested in seeing more of my posts. The above chart is from my post "Evolved08gsr's Voting / Posting Analysis #001 - Full Population".
I'm happy to take suggestions on what kind of analysis to do next :)
