sneakers is one of my favourite films in the ‘people with computers’ genre of films that i’ve seen over the years that really did well at showing a future vision of encryption, government agencies, hacking, phreaking with a side narrative how the information controls everything connected to it. i’ll never forget this section in the film as it compacted and connected together what i was seeing on a macro level in the local government i was working for at the time, i did two shifts and early and a late.
green screens and massive keyboards, spinning tapes and a computer the size of a front room in an apartment building. we ran tasks in a computer system called helmsman, we had a sun sparc running alongside as they migrated from massive to small but i could never fathom why the council system ran on it. like an overpriced, out of data, wrapped in layers of complexity that tied that into a contract with a company that had it’s hooks into the very heart of the way that local economy and economics worked, they literally had the keys to the castle.
old and a little bit more wiser i realise that in todays society of ever changing ideals and information creating and being reminded, accountable even to the memories of yesterday and the rational learning process of legacy we should never forget these pointers. as blockchains open up the world to be a more open, transparent, trackable data silo of what, when and how we should remember that it’s the people that try to hold them back and control them, exploit them for power and greed are the ones that are new age of disrupters, not just hackers but actual next generation digital dictators. forces like we have never seen before waiting in the shadows of the undernet with custom hardware and polymorphic mac address ranges.
the new samurai, the next level yakuza, the digital packet sniffing version of a modern day realisation of our favourite marvel characters in modern day life. not all our change agents will be white hatted and chilled out to the sounds of beats and purple kush. some will be angry, forced to survive between the cracks of a society that has to go forward regardless of right or wrong, just forward, that way, no looking back. the race is not just for a brave new world it’s for one where everyone is accountable not just to the system but to themselves.
the growth consumption of each and every one of us has to change, we have to re-map our low level behaviours and seek to rectify and positively influence those in others. we have to openly discuss them not just on a digital discovery blockchain but map that chain of events in our daily lives for to truly change our world we need to expose the craziness of being apathy driven in our actions. only then, can we truly shape our time living on a moving piece of space dust. i’ll see you at the spaceport, m’kay?
