Humans…
Humans are social beings. We have lived in communities for thousands of years, helping each other the best we can. We went from small communities where we lived as homo sapiens helping each other, to big communities where we have millions of people that live in countries, and even those countries try to gather and create nations… like the United Nations for example!
So… throughout all of humanity's time we have gathered and increased the size of the community, we have shared information, we have helped each other, we have talked to one another! And steemit is just like that!
Steemit is a blogging platform, where you can make daily posts and earn it! But, is that it? NO!!! Steemit is also a social network platform! We need to create followers! Each time we do a post we get more followers, more and more! But posts aren’t the only thing that matters! COMMENTS!
Comments are just as important as posts, by commenting on other’s content, and providing good content yourself for their posts the social network grows bigger and better! But what makes a comment a good comment?
Commenting is an art, some people can do it without any effort, while other’s have a hard time making good comments! I’ll give you some tips on how to make good comments:
- Always read the post first- People… if you are going to comment on other people’s posts read the damn post first! It’s a must! Do you think people are dumb? Do you think people won’t realize that you didn’t read the post? They will… and in the end, you will probably get a flag! And even if the post is a dtube video, it’s not that hard to watch a 5 min video! If you are skilled enough at English you can put the video in 2x and listen to it in half the time!
Quoting – Ok, so you read the post first and you are now ready to comment, one of the best things to make the poster know that you have read the post is quoting him! Quoting is simple you just use (>) and put the quote in front of it! After quoting just write some piece of information you want to add to the quote, maybe give some information about yourself, some input, or try to be funny! It’s not that hard!
Not only does quoting make the poster realize you read the post but it also makes you more visible in the midst of hundreds of comments!Making a list – Making a list is also a great thing, people are more allured to read lists! As soon as their eyes see a list it’s like when a dog sees a toy! Making a list catches attention!!
Being funny – Who doesn’t like comedy nowadays!? We live in a boring world full of pain and suffering! Comedic relief is something that everyone wants!!
Good information – You can do all of the above tips, but if the information you are writing isn’t the best no one is going to read it! Always try to give out good information! Just saying “ Good read, thanks for sharing” isn’t good information! Giving out good content, maybe post a study you have seen about a certain issue or topic, anything that is not spam and adds something to the post can be called good information! Even the fact that you say you don’t agree with the poster's opinion is good information, as long as you provide the facts to back up your claim of course!
Remember, after 7 days your comment is going to be on the blockchain forever! So, make sure you are proud of your comment!

I am boring and do nothing special. I read the post and if there is something I want to ask or talk about I just write it in the comments. It is simple but at least its real and not some faketalk like "nice post, follow me I follow you"
For me posts are not for getting upvotes but to interact with the author and other readers. And I upvote them with 1% so that it stand always above the spamposts.

Never upvoted my own comments... 1% of my voting weight isn't much so it probably wouldn't even move, if it was worth anything i would probably do the same thing tbh, but just on the comments that i thought were "good" enough for it
Asking for something or providing good information is already doing more than a large % of the people that comment!

When you comment posts in hot or trending there will always be the annoying spammers. 1% upvote is nothing, but it moves the comment above all the spammers (because they usually dont upvote their comments or get flagged) and the comment gets much more visibility. It works for me.
Reading the posts and writing "interesting comments" should be self-evident but ...

I needed to know how to use this (>) Quotations thing. That is this the number 1 think I am taking from this hahahaha! Thanks Teuto!
I agree with your post though. I have preached the same on my Journal. People need to follow your advice and that of the other great commenters out there!

This is my number one response on how to gain a genuine following. Building relationships and establishing strong raport is essential to the Steemit community.
Great post btw:) I always enjoy your formatting, it is very inspiring.
P.s.
Sorry I havent been replying consitently to your comments, hectic life right now. VA wants to put me on Lurasidone. Not sure how I feel.

Thanks, i always try to format my posts to make them more eye appealing! Building strong relations is a must for me on steemit, i was never good at making friends and steemit actually made me better at it!
I'm a vet student so i don't usually deal with drugs like lurasidone, you going to take it for what? Depression and mood swings? I actually made a post about my depression, don't know if you are interested to read it but here, my main tools to fight depression is gym and cold showers tbh, but i guess some people have a harder time to deal with it... And i don't mind you not answering my comments, i know you are having a hard time, focus on you! We can talk more after you got your life all set and moving in the right way!

What are you using to format your posts, or are you just coding them yourself? I can check the blockchain to view your codes, just wondering if you are using any 3rd party software.
I am right beside you with the making friends part. The connections here seem to be a lot more real than those of other social media websites, like Facebook. I think it has to do with the fact that people are so much more likely to be legit, and not put up fronts, as they share abd comment on topics that are important to them.
Well, its a dopamine agonist acting as an antipsychotic. I experience some symptoms of psychosis which my therapist believes are inhibiting me from living a completely healthy life, I am kind of just coping. I have been in and out of different forms of therapy for three years now, refusing medication the whole time. I do as much exercise as my body can handle, I meditate and do yoga often, I end every shower with a cold portion, and I get out to nature as much as my schedule and the rain of Oregon will allow. I have studied and practiced spiritual Alchemy for 6 years, practical Alchemy for 4 years, both are designed to refine the consciousness and act as a form of psychotherapy. I have been doing everything I can possibly think of doing and I still just barely skate by across the bottom. So at this point, I am ready to try a medication, even though its basically against everything I stand for.
I will check out your depression post in a sec.

I do all the coding myself, actually learned it for steemit, it was hard the first 2 or 3 posts but after that it's almost instinctive!
I'm not very experienced with antipsychotic, we veterinarians don't usually administrate those kinds of things to animals...

Sorry, I had to do it. I basically didn't have a choice. Seriously though, great article. You're right that commenting is the way to get started. For a lot of people (myself included when I started) commenting was a bulk of the rewards that I received.
Commenting gets more people to your blog as they find out that you kinda know what you're talking about. People also like knowing that you're a real person and they can relate to you.
Reading the article is just basic, but a lot of people don't do that. They just want to get to the bottom so they can write a quick comment and (hopefully) get a little upvote to help them on their way. It's very selfish and normally easy to spot. Other times not, but eventually a person's true nature comes out. If all they care about is the upvote, eventually it will show. When they actually get to the point where they want to reward good content and not just fish for votes, then they can start giving and actually building a community.

I don't usually upvote comments because of that! When I see that a person read the post i go to their own blogs and read their content if it is good I upvote it!
When i first started on steemit my bulk of the rewards were comments too!! I got to 200 followers just by commenting
I hate spammers!

I've gotten a few quality followers from commenting on their pages. Most of the followers I have are deadbeats. They appear in the numbers, but they don't do anything. I don't even know why they exist. That's the way it goes though!

commenting is an art, and it isn't always easy. I find my fingers tripping over themselves, and my brain shutting down when I sometimes try to comment.usually after I've had a few drinks and start reading posts... The one thing I do look forward to after writing a post are comments, sadly i find not many commenting. Commenting is feedback, and any feedback whether it be good or bad is always helpful. It gives us a way to know if what we are posting is being liked, disliked, and what people want to read.

Keep going my friend, it's hard at the start, my early posts got 1-2 comments, now they normally get from 5-6, keep growing your network and you will see a rise in comments!

@teutonium This is a post every one on Steemit should read, especially, those who are new. I see a lot of people assuming that if they just come and say, nice post, the blogger will think, you read it. Nice post, means 99% of the times it wasn't read. At least that is how it appears. As to your question, I just be honest. I share my two cents, give my perspective, which is sometimes two lines and sometimes twenty. Cheers!

I am very impressed with your personal writing and always enjoy your comments on my blog as they are insightful and witty. I have really enjoyed getting to know you more and Steemit is my first and only social media experience. My guess is that you have made many friends through this avenue including myself.

Thanks! English is not my native language, i know i make some mistakes here and there, especially when i use then and than...
I always try to add something to the post with my comments, sometimes that something is comedy xD I go by the old saying: "if you don't have anything nice to say don't say anything at all"
I was never much of a social network kinda guy, i mainly used facebook for the messenger app, but on steemit i actually tried to "get out of my shell" and communicate with more people, by doing this i've made many friends, i follow them all and try to look at their posts as much as i can! it gets hard sometimes trying to comment and looking at everyone's posts... especially during exam season

I upvoted your article will you upvote and follow PLZ?!?!
hahahaha Totally joking! I like what you wrote here tremendously. There is nothing more frustrating than getting a bunch of spam comments on your post that have no relevance or depth to them just like the first sentence I wrote on this comment. It always makes me laugh when someone comments on one of my Dtube videos that is 4 minutes long and says something like "wow amazing content" 1 minute after I posted it. They must have a time machine I guess? haha
I like the idea of using quotations as well. I have seen a lot of people using this formatting in posts but have never taken the time to figure out how to use it. I know you gave a short description on how to format this way but still the information has gone over my head. I'll have to explore this a little deeper it looks like :) Cheers!

I made a Dtube video a while back explaining how i format my posts, if you want to check it out :) but the main stuff is using > for quotes just like this:
I just mute or flag spammers the second time they do it... if i get bigger on steemit i should probably start making a red list to put all the spammers that i've warned
I've had a couple of those that upvote my posts with 0.00$ seconds after it was posted and leave a comment saying: " Great post Sir, i enjoy very much your content sir"
I'm going to make a post about this but here is my idea about spammers, they are getting money in return...
Yes they might get flagged to 0 after a couple days, but in the meantime they probably get 0.5 steem, that's not much but if you go and make 100 accounts spamming comments then they get 50steem... but i might be wrong... i went and checked steemcleaners latest reports on spammers, some of them actually have 20STEEM on their accounts... that's not much, but like i said, think about 100 accounts doing the same thing with a script and then you have 100accounts with 20 STEEM each!
The cellphone verification thingy is meant to decrease this spam, but we all know how asians are like, doing scripts with many different cellphone numbers is like a walk in the park for them...
Sorry for the long answer i kinda went on rant xD

Cool man thank for for further explain this
Going to definitely up my formatting game with that one :)
No worries for the long response, writing is good therapy! Honestly 20 steem spread over 100 accounts that also have that amount comes out to a lot of money if someone is from a developing country so I see why people are doing it. It is defintely a less than savory practice though because it brings down the value of interactions like we are experiencing right now. It also wastes SP resources because those people are not actually creating content and curating people in the manner that the system is designed for. We are still in beta so I think that these issues will be ironed out over time, just have to trust the developers know what they are doing :) Cheers!
